Process for the production of structures containing glass fibers. It is known to produce dimensionally stable sheets of glass fibers by joining them to one another with a binding agent such as glue, gelatine, cellulose esters, natural and synthetic resins. For example, it was known to impregnate a glass fiber fleece with an aqueous solution of a precondensate and then to heat it for a longer time at an elevated temperature of 150 to 1801 C complete condensation has occurred.
It has now been found that dimensionally stable structures can be produced from glass fibers by providing glass fibers with a binding agent which consists of polyvinyl acetals which are formed directly on and between the glass fibers by reaction of the polyvinyl acetal formation components with one another.
The polyvinyl acetal formation components can consist of polyvinyl alcohol or partially saponified polyvinyl acetate on the one hand and aldehydes such as formaldehyde, ethaldehyde or ketones etc. on the other.
The process can, for example, be carried out in such a way that the glass fibers are impregnated with an aqueous solution which contains a mixture of polyvinyl acetal formation components, and that the aeetal bil - induces manure.
When the solution dries on the glass fibers, the water evaporates and, at the same time, the components of the mixture react with one another to form acetals. The acetals formed in this way adhere firmly to the glass fiber and connect them to form a dimensionally stable structure. However, the e glass fibers can initially only be treated with a solution of at least partially saponified polyvinyl acetate, such as
B. polyvinyl alcohol, soak and then treat with compounds containing a CO group, such as aldehydes or ketones, be it in aqueous solution or in vapor form. Of course you can dissolve the aeetal-forming components not only in water but also in other solvents and use such solutions, but water is the cheapest.
The advantages of the present invention are that it is possible to produce a dimensionally stable structure from glass fibers in a simple and inexpensive manner, which structure is water-resistant, specifically light and immune to bacteria. Not only are the raw materials for the binding agent, such as polyvinyl alcohol, partially saponified polyvinyl acetates, aldehydes and water, cheap,
by starting directly with the resin-forming components when they are used and not first having to use them to produce precondensates or finished resins, but the quantities of binder required are also very small; Furthermore, the processing Ver is very simple and the required temperatures are low, so that the heating with simple devices such. B. by Hei zen by means of a hot air stream, can be made vorge.
The invention is explained in more detail in the following example: A glass fiber fleece (glass fiber mat) is placed in a rope container which contains an aqueous solution with 20 g polyvinyl alcohol and 6 g formalin Contains B> 30 l / oig per liter. After the excess solution has been soaked and allowed to drip off, the moist fleece is placed on two sieve plates and dried at temperatures from 120 to 103011 C .
During the drying process, the sieve plates can be more or less loaded, and depending on the pressure exerted, a thicker or looser glass fiber plate is obtained, which can be easily cut into any desired size.
For insulation purposes, only very low pressures are preferably used in the plate production, so that structures with a specific weight of 0.6 to 0.8 and less can easily be obtained may contain.
For a fiberglass board of 2 m2 and a thickness of 2 one, only about 38 g of polyvinyl alcohol and 12 g of formula in 301 / oig are needed as binding agents. However, these quantities can even be reduced. Instead of formaldehyde, other aldehydes, e.g. B. acetaldehyde can be used. The panels can also be produced continuously.
