(fig. 1).
(fig.
(fig. 33).

Bundle making machine.
The present invention relates to a machine for making packages, that is to say a machine for making packages, starting from elements in variable number, such as boxes for example, of generally parallelepipedal shape. , arranged against each other in one or more layers, all of these grouped elements being wrapped in a sheet of paper rolled up around and closing with folds which can be glued.
The machine object of the invention is characterized in that the elements of the pack, grouped according to the desired number, are moved in a horizontal movement towards a sheet of paper arranged vertically and stretched in an appropriate manner, this sheet thus being folded in U around the anterior vertical face of the packet, under the pressure of the latter, and being engaged at the same time as it inside a die arranged so as to be able to form the subsequent folds of the paper while the package continues its path through it until it is completely enveloped.
The appended drawing, given by way of example, represents an embodiment of the machine which is the subject of the invention.

In fig. 1, we see in a, b, c, d, a ', b', c ', d' the outline of the packet to be wrapped, which packet is composed in the example represented by efive parallelepipedic elements, the first of which is in ci, ai, d , dl, a ', atl, d', d'l, the second in a1, a2, d1, d2, a'1, a'2, d'1 of 2, etc.
In the machine, the package is animated by a horizontal movement in the direction of the arrow F of ma. nière to take successively the aspects represented in FIGS. 1 to 6. In fig. 1, the front fold of the bandedepapier1 has just been formed along the edges c, d, c ', d', as well as one of the side folds around the edges d, and c, c '. In fig. 2, the upper fold r back has just been made along the edge a ', b'.
In fig. 3, the second rear ply has also just been formed along the edge a, b, with gluing, of this second ply on the first by means of glue previously deposited on the. part 2 shown in gray. In fig. 4, the rear side folds have been formed along ridges a, a, b, b '. In fig. 5, the terminal sapphire tongues have been folded back around the ridges a ', d', b ', c'. Finally, in fig. 6, the lower terminal tongues are in turn folded down along the edges a, d, b, c and eol. lées langrlkettes préeédentes molten glue previously deposited on the. part 3 shown in gray.
The machine is continuously supplied by any device (for example by the conveyor belt, the end of which can be seen at 4 in fig. 7) which individually brings the elements or boxes to constitute successive packages on a table 5 at the end. of which is disposed a lifting plate 6 of length equal to that of the longitudinal edges a, & ,, V ... of the package (in reality the plate 6 is to the right of the, position shown in fig. 7 so that its support rod 7 occupies line 7a shown in phantom).
A worker or an intermittent mechanism not shown, such as for example a rotating arm, places on the lifting plate 6 the boxes placed on the table 5. At the end of the lifting plate 6 is located a pedal 8 articulated to the axis 9 and forming, detector. When tray 6 is full, the box or el. telminal element presses on the pedal 8 and this one by an automatic clutch or an electric timer, for example, causes the starting of the machine for the cycle of preparation of the package whose elements line the plate 6. This plate is then raised and passes from position 6a shown in FIG. 11 at position 6b opposite the die.
In this upper position, the plate u 6b is located in front of a push plate 10 (fig. 7) carried by a frame 11 which can slide on two fixed guides 12, 13, said frame being, moreover, provided with two clamping plates 1t, 16 which are carried by the articulated viers 16, 17 and can be clamped against the end faces of the package to prevent the. fall of it. When the plates 14, 15 thus grip the bundle, the elevator 6 goes down again to resume its original position 6a in the extension of the table 5 (fig.
11). The latter then begins its course in the direction of the arrow y, so that the anterior face of the packet immediately meets in front of it the sheet of paper 1. This is held vertically on either side of the packet between smooth rollers 18 which are controlled in a similar manner. - Required by the actuating mechanism of the machine and which ensured the establishment of the sheet 1 in this position, and rubberized rollers 19 which are press rollers can turn crazy.
At this phase of the cycle, the rollers 18 are stopped and cannot rotate; they consequently oppose a certain resistance to the sliding of the sheet, and consequently ensure its tension when the packet advancespar the pusher entails it.
The rubber rollers19 then rotate, driven by the movement of the sheet. The pusher continuing its movement in the direction F, the sheet is first flexed as can be seen in FIG. 11, in which the pusher came from 10 to 10a. The anterior folds around the longitudinal ridges c, d, c ', d'are amareeés. The packet and the sheet of paper then penetrate into the matrix, this penetration determining the finish of the folds c, d and c ', d'.
The control of the clamping plates 14 and 15 is carried out so as to a. ensure their safety. back, then their approach, in order to grip and tighten the package to hold it during its transport, then, again, their removal to abandon said package when it has been engaged in the conveyor.
For this purpose, the levers 16 and 17 of the plates (read 14 and 15 respectively are extended at 16a and 17a (fig. 26) beyond their pivot point and these extensions are connected by connecting rods 100 to a lifter 101 pivoting at 102 and subjected to the action of a return spring 103. This compression spring tends to place the pedals in the position shown in Fig. 26, for which the plates 14 and 15 are brought together, which ensures the keep the package trapped between them.
On the frame 11 carrying the pusher 10 is pivotally mounted a lever 104 subjected to the action of a spring 105.
Then. the advance of the frame 11 in the direction of arrow F and towards the end of travel of this frame
(that is, when the packet is engaged in the die) the lever 104 meets a fixed stop 106. The lever 104 then pivots against the action of the spring 105 (fig. 27) and acts on the extension. 16a of the lever 16 thus causing the angular displacement of the lever and, consequently, of the lever 17. The plates 14 and 15 are thus separated from one another and the package is released.
The frame 11 then begins its backward movement (arrow Fi, fig. 27) to pick up a new package, the lever 104 ceases to be in contact with the stop 106, but the plates 14 and 15 are kept apart one by one. on the other, because the lever 104 remains butted obliquely against the tail 16a of the lever 16, under the effect of the pressure exerted by the spring 103 acting on the latter, the spring 105 not being powerful enough to withdraw the lever 104 moving the lever 16 against the action of the spring 103.
When the frame 11 reaches the rear end of its travel, that is to say when a new package has been brought in by the plate. 6 between the plates 14 and 15, la. tail 16a meets a fixed stop 107 terminating in a ramp which causes the pivoting of the lever 16. The plates 14 and 15 again move apart a little more from each other to receive the new package. The lever 104 loses its support against the extension 16a and, under the action of its return spring 105, comes to its rest position. The plates 14 and 15 are brought closer to one another by the compression spring 103 in order to grip. the new package as soon as the frame 11 begins its movement again in direction F.
The die comprises a lower horizontal table 20 and an upper horizontal table 21 located at a height above the first substantially equal to the height of the package, said table 21 being movable vertically to compensate for the height inequalities of the packages. upper table 21 is shown in fig. 23 and 24. It is articulated at the ends of four angled levers, symmetrically arranged in pairs, pivoting around fixed axes 23 and interconnected at their free end by connecting rods 25. These form with the table 21 articulated parallelograms , so that said table always remains parallel to itself.
A counterweight 24 can be added to reduce the weight of the table 21. Finally, the rest position of said table corresponding to the lowest package is fixed by a screw stop 26.
On their front edge, the tables 20, 21 have an inclined plane 20a, 21a and these planes form a flare facilitating the introduction of the package.
The package being pushed together with the sheet of paper 1, the folds are formed around the edges c, d and. c ', d'. In addition, when the packet has completed part of its journey between the tables 20, 21, it reaches two runners 27, 28 arranged vertically on either side of the packet and which fold the paper around the edges c, c ', d, d' (fig. 10), so that the preparation stage shown in fig. 1 is reached. Each of these pads 27, 28 consists of two parts, one 29 fixed in height, the other 30 capable of vertical deflection. Each of the parts 29 is fixed at the end of one of two side plates 31, 32 of the matrix.
The other part 30 is articulated on the corresponding side plate 31, 32 by the inter rn. edia. ire of two links 33 forming an articulated parallelogram, a spring 34 tends to pull the part 30 upwards to press it on the upper table 21 (see FIG. 18). A stop 30a (fig. 25) limits the possible displacement of the part 30 ,. so that there remains between this part and the table 21 a clearance similar to that provided between the part 29 and the lower table 20, this clearance allowing the free passage of the horizontal tabs that the ba. paper, present at the end of the package
(fig. 1).
The parts 29, 30 of each pad are bent both horizontally and vertically to facilitate the introduction of the paper and its folding along the edges c, c ', d, d'. The side sheets 31, 32 are movable in the horizontal direction to absorb the differences in the length of the packages. Each of them is, for this purpose, mounted on two hiellettes 35 pivoting around vertical axes 36 carried by the lower table (FIG. 10). Said links 35 forming the articulated parallelograms ensure the parallelism of the poles 31 and 32 as well as that of the guide of the package.
Springs 37 tend to maintain between said side plates an interval equal to the minimum length of a bundle, the rest position being fixed by screw stops 38.
The way in which the folding stage of FIG. 1.
We will describe the organs which ensure the making of the subsequent folds.
On the upper table 21 (Fig. 11) are articulated to axes 39 two bent levers 40 symmetrically arranged and. carrying a shoe 41 by means of a link 42.
When the packet arrives at. the position shown in FIG. 12, the shoe 41 passing through a transverse window 45 of the upper table 21 comes to press on the rear face of the packet forming the upper rear fold around the edge a ', b' (fig. 9).
The operation of the pad 41 will be described with reference to FIG. 29.
One of the aforementioned levers 40 is provided with an extension terminating in a pallet 110. Through a window 111 of the. upper table 21, this pallet can protrude inside the die, as indicated in phantom lines at 1: 10a. In this position, the lever 40 has come to 40a under the action of a return spring 112.
When the package is moved to the table between the tables 20 and 21, it comes, during its advance, push back the pallet 110 which thus passes from the position indicated in phantom lines to that indicated in solid lines.
This angular displacement of the pallet causes the lever 40 to pivot. The pad 41 is therefore applied to the package and eela by the intermediary of the spring 113 interposed between the arm 114, integral with the lever 40, and a tail of the lever 42.
that the posterior and upper edge of the pack has come sufficiently in front of the pad 41., the latter pivots around its hinge axis at the end of the lever 42 and while maintaining its support on the pack passes into the position vertical shown in fig. 13, which has the effect of ensuring perfect folding of the sheet of paper.
As soon as the package, following its advance in the direction of the arrowj, auralibéréla pallet 110, the latter will return, under the action of the return spring 112, to the position indicated at 110a.
The assembly thus described can be completed by a locking intended to hold the pad substantially in the position indicated in FIG. 29, during all. the time to retreat the pusher 10, and to release it when the latter is. arrived at the rear end of travel.
For this purpose, the assembly described above is completed by a lever 115 having a hollow in which the end 116 of the lever 40 is engaged. This lever 115 is connected by a set of rods 117, 118 and a lever angled 119 to a movable lever 120 a. usually by the action of a stop.
121 integral with the frame 11.
When this stop meets lever 120 towards the end of the return stroke of pusher 10, lever 11 is pulled back and releases lever 40 which is then returned to position 40a shown in phantom in FIG. 29.
Ruand, at. At the end of the operations, the pedal 8 has been actuated by the elements arranged on the elevator 6 and has initiated the operating cycle of the machine, a clutch has set the main shaft 50 carrying a certain number of cams in rotation, thus as seen in fig. 8 and 9. One of these, the cam 51. (Fig. 8), determines the pivoting of a lever 52 around a fixed articulation 52a. This lever 52 pulls by an articulated lever 53 a pinion 54 rolling on a fixed rack 55.
The pinion 54 meshed with an erema. illëre 56 fixed on a carriage 58 movable on two parallel guides 57. The rack 55 being fixed, as has just been said, the pinion 54 undergoes a circumferential displacement equal to its translation. This circumferential displacement and this translation being added to one another at the point of engagement of the pinion 54 with the rack 56,] a, translation of the latter and, consequently, that of the carriage 58, is therefore double that of the pinion. 54.
On the carriage are articulated connecting rods 59
(see also Figs. 11 and 12) connected by a link 60 to a pad 61 extending, as well as] epatin41, over most of the width of the die (Figs. 10 and 25).
When the package is immobilized in the position shown a, FIG. 12 (that is to say immediately before the sliding of the hatch 58), the pad 61 is displaced angularly about its axis of articulation on the rod 60; it thus passes from the position shown in FIG. 11 to that indicated in fig. 12. This rotation of the shoe initiates the lower fold around the edge a, b. Finally, the pad 61 is raised completely and thus comes to rest against the. rear side of the package by making the lower rear fold and gluing this fold with the adhesive deposited in 2
(folding stage shown in fig. 3).
In fig. 11 and 12, we have shown schematically the different control members of the pad 61.
Referring to fig. 30, it can be seen that each of the aforementioned connecting rods 59 comprises a roller 125 held in place against a ramp 126 by the action of a spring 127.
Ramp 126 east. articulated at the end of a fixed raceway 128 and it is supported by a cam 129 connected by a suitable linkage to a lever 130. This lever 130 is controlled by a cam 131 wedged on the main shaft 50 of the machine.
The angular displacement of the cam 129 causes the lifting of the ramp 126 and, consequently, the height displacement of the shoe 61 which, coming into abutment against the package, passes from the position indicated a.la.fig.11a, that indicated in fig. 12 and 30 to make the lower rear fold, as has been said.
When the carriage 58 begins to move, the roller 125 by rolling on the ramp 126, then on the track 128 maintains the shoe in the raised position, which allows the latter to ensure the drive of the package during the continuation of the routing due to said packet through the matrix.
The pads 62 and 63 then come into action which, until then, were in the rest position indicated in dotted lines in FIG. 10.
These pads 62 and 63 are carried, each, by a rod 64 pivoting on a rod 65 integral with a control shaft 66. The shafts 66 are driven in rotation, key so as to apply the pads 62 and 63 against the rear face of the package. The point of application of the pads on the pack is eccentric with respect to their articulation on the connecting rods 64, so that these pads, when they are applied to the pack, pivot around the ridges a, a ', b, bl of the latter by passing from the position shown in FIGS. 10 and 14 to that indicated by fig. 17 and 18.
In this pivoting movement, the pads 62 and 63 fold the sheet of paper around the edges a, a 'and b, b', thus constituting the rear side folds (Fig. 4).
In reality, each of the pads 62 and 63 is double and consists of two superimposed parts such as 62a and 62b (fig. 15, 16 and 31
The lower part of each of the runners (part 62a for the runner 62) is mounted so as to leave between it and the lower table 20 a slight play j (fig. 15) allowing the passage of the lower end tab which the paper at the folding stage of fig. 4.
The pa. The upper table 62b is mounted on the shaft 66 so that it can accompany the upper table 21 in its possible vertical movements while keeping between the upper edge of the pa. rtie 62b and the table the clearance j necessary to allow the passage of the upper terminal tab.
For this purpose, the connecting rod 65b (fig. 16) is integral with a sleeve 67 which can slide without rotating on the shaft 66. This sleeve is subjected to the action of a spring 68 tending to move it away from the lower table and a solid stop 69 S of the upper tahle limits the stroke of this sleeve, thus determining the value of clearance j.
Each of the trees 66 is. integral with a conical toothed pinion 135 meshing with a toothed sector 136 (fig. 31). This sector can pivot at 137 and it is provided with an extension 138 on which and is supported. can roll a roller 139 carried by a lever 140. The two levers 140 are wedged on a common shaft 141 which can be moved angularly by the action of a cam 142 wedged on the control shaft 50 of the machine. This cam acts on a lever 143 connected by a connecting rod 144: to a lever 145 wedges on the shaft 141.
Under these conditions, it will be understood that the cam 142 causes the pivoting of the pads 62, 63 during its rotation.
The package, pushed by the driven shoe 61 itself, as we have seen, by the slide 58, engages between the side plates 31 and 32 (Figs. 7 and 10). Cell. These are each provided with two openings 70 and 71, the first of these openings. s opening to the upper edge of the side plates, while the second opens to the lower edge.
The edges 72 and 73, respectively, of these grooves are shaped so as to constitute a ramp whose edge is in the form of a bevel, as can be seen at 72a and 73a!, More particularly in FIGS. 21 and 22, and these edges are dimensioned such that the sharp end of edge 72 is above the upper table 21., while the sharp end of edge 73 is located below the lower table .
As the pack is advanced, the upper terminal tabs enter the opening 70, and under the action of the ramp 72, they are folded back against the end ends of the pack, pivoting around the ridges a ', d' . and b ', c'respectively. The folding is then at the stage represented by FIG. 5.
Then, the lower end tongues in turn enter the opening 71 and, wus the action of the ramp 73, they pivot around the edges a, d and b, c respectively, they are folded against the end ends against which they are held. by the action of the side plates 31 and 32, which ensures the gluing of the tongues by the glued part 3. The folding is completely finished (fig. 6) and the package still driven by the slide 58 is led towards the rear end of the table 20 from where it will be evacuated by any appropriate means.
The package being released from the matrix, the cam 51 causes the angular displacement of the lever 52 which returns the pinion 54 to its initial position represented in FIG. 8.
The slide 58 therefore returns towards the rear part of the die and the shoe 61 is retracted so as to leave the upper surface of the table 20 free (position shown in FIG. 11).
The skate l. at. resumed his. rest position as soon as the package has ceased to act on the end of the control lever acting on the lever 40.
A new sheet of paper 1 is engaged and kept stretched between the rollers 18 and 19. A new package is then fed by the pusher 10 and the described cycle is repeated.
The sheets of paper 1 intended for the con feetion of the packages are debited from a strip of paper unwinding from a reel 80 (Figs. 7 and 9).
We know that roll paper has. greater resistance in the direction of the length of the wound web than in the transverse direction. of this band.
The paper feed device of the described machine makes it possible to orient the sheet so that its longitudinal direction is disposed in the direction of the length of the bundle along which the sheet is subjected to the maximum fatigue.
For this purpose, the coil 80 is disposed laterally with respect to the machine, as shown in Figs. 7 and 9. The strip, driven by the roller 81 on which it is applied by the pressure roller 81a, passes over them rolls 82 in order to remove the curvature of the paper resulting from its winding.
The diameter and rotational speed of the roller. u 81 are determined so as to deliver the length of paper necessary to cover the packet in the direction of its length, taking into account the side tabs which are folded over the ends of said packet. The roller 81 receives its movement from the shaft 50 by means of the transmission 86 comprising the pairs of bevel gears 87 and 88 and the chain or belt 89 (FIG. 9).
It is then driven by the rollers 83, 83a and it passes under the blade 85 of a guillotine.
The roller 83 and the pressure roller 83a are provided to draw the sheet intermittently, this intermittent advance of the sheet being necessitated by the obligation to stop the paper, so that the blade 85, by its lowering, can. cut the paper and thus constitute the sheet 1 intended to wrap a package.
This intermittent advance and the control of the blade 85 are carried out as follows:
Continuous rotation of roller 81 is provided by chain or belt 89 (Figs. 9 and 32). On the shaft of the roller 81 is mounted in the usual manner a toothed nut 150 which can be moved along the shaft by a fork 151 controlled by a linkage 152. This linkage results in a lever subjected to the action of a cam (not shown) wedged on the main shaft 50.
When the fork 151 is operated, the nut 150 engages by its toothing with a toothed hub 153 integral with the pulley 154 (or a chain wheel) ensuring, via a belt (or a chain wheel). chain) 155, the drive of the roller 83 for the appropriate time imposed by the profile of the cam.
A cam 156, also wedged on the shaft 50, is provided to ensure the operation, at the appropriate moment, of the blade 85 of the cutter
(fig. 33). This cam is connected by a trin glerie. 157, to a shaft 158 on which are wedged the arms 159 carrying the. blade 85.
While stopping the rolls 83 and 83a, the sheet of paper unwound by the rollers 81 and 81a forms a loop at 80a between the rolls 81, 81a and the rolls 83, 83a, this loop then being absorbed during the restarting the rollers 83, 83a.
On leaving the cutter, the sheet is supported by a horizontal table comprising two rollers 84, 84a, also driven by an intermittent movement and driven for this purpose by a control connected to the transmission 86.
The rotation of the rollers 84, 84a brings the sheet of paper between two rollers 90, 90a which are also intermittently moving.
Then the sheet passes between the rolls 91 and 91a of a known mechanism ensuring the bonding of the paper.
The roller is subjected to the action of a cam which applies the glue roller to the sheet of paper at the places which are to receive the glue.
Finally, the sheet of paper arrives between the rollers 18 and 19 as has been said previously.
The reel 80. is carried by a horizontal shaft 92 (FIGS. 7 and 9) resting on a support 93 integral with the machine.
The support 93 has two sets of bearings to receive the shaft 92, the second set can be used to receive a spare spool 94.
