Process for the production of colored polymerisation plastics. It is known to color or matt plastics in the melt flow by stirring in finely powdered color bodies or white pigments. In terms of tinting power or matting effect, the degree of efficiency obtained is unsatisfactory because the degree of distribution - both the color body and the white pigments - is inadequate.
In order to increase this, so-called wetting agents or dispersing agents have been added in an arbitrary manner, especially in the case of the latter, for example titanium dioxide, which indeed bring an improvement, but do not meet the high requirements. There is a risk that these agents may interfere with the polymerization or condensation process.
This invention relates to a process for the production of colored polymerisation plastics in which strong matting effects and stronger colors are achieved by incorporating the coloring agent into the monomeric starting material and subjecting the mixture obtained to polymerisation.
The incorporation of the coloring agent is expediently in the form of a paste or dough; for example, the coloring agent is incorporated as an aqueous paste into the monomeric starting material distributed in water.
In another embodiment of the process, the coloring agent is distributed in an organic carrier medium and incorporated into the monomeric starting material. This carrier medium can be an inert liquid which distills off when the temperature is increased.
The medium can also be an organic solvent, which can later also be distilled off from the mixture or the finished polymer, or it can be a plasticizing, organic substance from one of the body classes known for this purpose, which is used in the finished polymer Plastic remains.
All media that do not interfere with the polymerization or condensation process are suitable. Another advantage is the addition of substances that act as interface wetting agents. Here, too, it is advisable to use substances which can be distilled off during or after the preparation of the polymer, or which are volatile with steam.
Examples of suitable surface-active substances are aminocaproic acid or caprolactam or the salt of a sulfonic acid of a butanol fatty acid ester.
White pigments or colored pigments are primarily suitable as coloring agents. Likewise, soluble dyes can be processed by the process in which they are used. triturated with a liquid monomer, or made into a paste with a solid monomer together with an inert solvent or non-solvent which does not participate in the subsequent reaction process.
The efficiency in terms of matting and coloring is significantly improved. If you add as much of the water-soluble, monoirreren starting materials to the paste of the coloring agent as is necessary to rub on the usual rubbing machines, or if you mix the pulverized pigments with the the liquid monomers or a concentrated solution or suspension thereof finely rubbed in water.
One or three-roll mills, ball mills, funnel mills, disintegrators and others can be used as friction units.
Rubbing not only results in a great fineness of the grain, but above all an intimate wetting of the grain by the monomers. It has proven to be advantageous to rub the color pastes before adding them to the monomeric polymerization or condensation additive can be added, to be diluted with a little water, so that even, moderate mixing is achieved with the highest dispersion and the greatest grain fineness, agitated autoclaves are unnecessary, and the pigments no longer sink to the bottom.
The particular advantage of the process is that the otherwise required percentage of coloring agents can be significantly reduced with the same effect. This is. particularly favorable when processing the polymerisation interest material into textile threads. The spinning reliability is greater, the filter clogging is less and the negative influence on the strength properties is suppressed.
The following examples illustrate some embodiments of the new method.
Example 1: In a solution of 3650 parts by weight of s-aminocaproic acid lactam in 650 parts by weight of water, 35 parts by weight of titanium dioxide are stirred in as a 50 percent aqueous paste, to which 5 parts by weight of a-aminocaproic acid were previously added as a surface-active substance , and polymerizes as usual.
Example 2: 60 parts by weight of red iron oxide are stirred into a solution of 33 parts by weight of E-aminocaproic acid lactam in 6 parts by weight of water, on a. Hreiwalzenstuhl feiest rubbed, whereupon the paste is diluted with 10 parts by weight of water. and stirs in 6000 parts by weight of E-Aniinocaproäurelactam and polymerized in the usual way.
Example 3: 40 parts by weight of titanium dioxide 98 percent are stirred into 60 parts by weight of benzyl butyl phthalate and 1 part by weight of the sodium salt of the oleic acid isobutanol ester, and the mixture is ground in a ball mill. The paste obtained in this way is added to 1000 parts by weight of molten adipic acid hexa.methylenediamine and condensed. as usual.
