Process for breaking down natural or synthetic rubbers. The invention relates to a method for the degradation of natural or synthetic rubber by heat treatment and processing of the goods. The method is characterized in that salts of organic acids containing polyvalent cations are used as agents which promote degradation. Rubber compounds can of course also be treated.
As a means of promoting degradation kom nien of the salts mentioned above all those into consideration that ions from polyvalent cations, z. B. of magnesium, calcium, aluminum, zinc, lead, iron, nickel and cobalt and aliphatic or cyeloaliphatic acids, such as saturated or unsaturated fatty acids, resin acids, naphthenic acids or paraffin oxidation fatty acids or aromatic acids such as benzoic acid ,
Nitrobenzoic acid, alkylbenzoic acid, aralkylbenzoic acid, benzoylbenzoic acid, phthalic acid nionooleyiester, cresylnaphthylcarboxylic acid etc. exist. As soap-forming cations, apart from the aforementioned ti. a. also consider copper and manganese. The use of salts of these cations is, however, generally not recommended, since they can exert toxic effects.
Salts of the type mentioned above can be used individually or in groups.
It has already been proposed to use simple and substituted aromatic thio compounds to break down rubber. Compared to these additives, which exert certain irritating effects, the degradation agents to be used according to the invention offer the advantage that they are physiologically completely neutral bodies.
The main advantage, however, is that the claimed salts have the property, in addition to excellent rubber degradation effects, to possess other excellent properties; They .disperse the fillers, act as activators and have strong plasticizing effects. While z. B. the known aromatic thio compounds have no beneficial effect on the tensile strength or sprayability of a good rubber mixture, these properties are considerably improved by the use of degradation agents according to the invention.
For example, the tensile strength of a mixture of natural rubber with 40% carbon black increases due to the presence of the degradation agents present,
for example about 2% of a mixture of zinc oleate and iron oleate of 170 kg / cm? to about 230 kg / cm2.
The development of a large group of usable degradation agents has the advantage that one is not limited to the use of a few substances, but can select the most suitable or most easily accessible substances as required, here through and through the use of mixtures that consist of two or more of the rubber-degrading salts, one is able to achieve degradation effects in the desired gradation.
The prerequisite for the effectiveness of the degradation salts is generally their solubility or fine dispersibility in the rubber mixture.
The best degradation effect is generally caused by iron salts. Co balt, lead and nickel salts have somewhat lower degradation effects than iron salts. By combining salts with different cations with the same or different types of carboxylic acids, one can produce degradation agents of various degrees of effectiveness with regard to rubber degradation and at the same time influence the other properties of the additives in the desired manner.
The degradation agents can also be used to incorporate other additives, such as softeners, esters, mineral oils, selective extracts (olefin-rich mineral oil fractions that have been separated by means of liquid sulfurous acid) and the like, or in groups, and also through this the properties and effects of the degradation agents affect, e.g.
B. facilitate the incorporation of the degradation agents into the rubber compounds. When using Abbaumit items that contain large amounts of iron soaps. In some cases the addition of anti-aging agents has proven to be advantageous.
The degradation agents are expediently used in such a way that they add to the natural and / or synthetic rubber or the common rubber mixtures during processing on devices such as rollers or kneaders at temperatures above 500, e.g. B. between 60 and 110, who is incorporated and the dismantling is carried out with access to air.
The invention will be explained below using some examples. Here, the defo values (defo hardness and defoelasticity) were determined as the mass for the degradation effects. By way of comparison, the values (so-called blank values) are given which are used when processing the same rubber or
the same rubber compounds without the addition of degradation agents were found. Example .2: Smoked sheets were given an addition of 211 / o of a mixture which, in addition to zinc oleate, contained about 1% iron oleate. The processing temperature on the roller was 900.
