Measuring method and apparatus for implementing this method.
The object of the present invention is a measurement method, more particularly applicable to high precision measurements.
The invention also relates to an apparatus for carrying out this method.
The method according to the present invention consists in using nn measurement standard having on at least one longitudinal section a wolf-tooth profile, and in moving said standard in the longitudinal direction, by an amount depending on the value to be measured, its position being then located by means of a probe which is inserted between the teeth, perpendicular to the direction of movement of the standard, and whose exact depth of introduction authorized by the position of the tooth encountered is measured.
The apparatus for carrying out the above method comprises a standard in the form of a sliding rod, along at least one of the generatrices of which its profile is wolf-toothed, a feeler being placed in its vicinity. , capable of being introduced between the teeth perpendicular to the axis of the rod, this feeler in turn being connected to instruments measuring the quantity which it is likely to penetrate between the wolf teeth.
The appended drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment of the method which is the subject of the invention and shows an additional, by way of example, an embodiment of the measuring apparatus according to the invention,
Fig. 1 sehematically illustrates the prin. Operating principle of a measuring device.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of a measuring element consisting of the standard and the probe.
Fig. 3 shows a micrometer for external measurements, using the element of fig. 2.
In fig. 1, we see a wolf-tooth profile 1, belonging to a stallion 2, mobile in the direction of arrows 3, that is to say of its axis 4, this stallion being cylindrical, that is to say in rod, bar or tube shape.
The teeth 1 can be cut in a flat of the rod, which would then appear as a rack, but could also constitute the profile of a thread or even of an uninterrupted series of identical and equidistant circular grooves.
Perpendicular to the displacement axis 4 can move a feeler 5, guided without play in a fixed and rigid block 6.
This feeler can move between an extreme retracted position corresponding to what is shown in 5 'in phantom, and the advanced position 5, in which its free end comes into contact with a tooth.
It is clear that the amplitude of the possible forward movement of the probe 5 depends on the position of the standard 2 and that consequently, if one knows the inclination of the wolf teeth and their pitch, it is possible to determine with precision the position of the latter according to the row of the tooth that the probe encounters and the depth at which it is possible to introduce it until contact.
To carry out a measurement of the position of the standard, we will therefore begin by withdrawing the probe to the extreme position 5 ', pnis we will bring the standard to such position as we want, determined, for example, by its encounter. with an object to be measured, then the probe will be made to advance by the quantity authorized by its meeting with the said standard, the position of which can be precisely identified as a function of the pitch of the teeth, the row of the tooth encountered, the inclination of this last and the position reached by the probe.
It is therefore necessary to be able to withdraw the probe each time the standard is moved, which spring 7 automatically does.
The probe is in other words normally withdrawn, and the application against the inclined plane of the tooth is done by hand via the lever 8 and the button 9, attached to said lever by means of a spring 10.
By pressing the button, the spring is stretched and, with practically constant pressure, the advancement and contacting of the probe with the standard are thus brought about.
The lever 8 oscillates around the point 11, very close to the end of the probe that it meets, which makes it possible to use it as a multiplier mechanism intended in turn to actuate the probe 12 of a comparator 13 for example. . So, and all questions of scale and ratio between the drawn elements set aside, we see that it is possible to determine the exact position of the standard 2 by taking a direct reading on the comparator 13.
It is obvious that one could use any other means of measuring the position of the probe 5 than a lever and a comparator, the condition to be fulfilled being simply to be able to multiply the amplitude of the probe's displacement by a sufficient quantity. to allow a good reading of the measured values.
The dorsal faces of the wolf teeth will preferably be inclined at 45, and the pitch of the teeth will preferably be of a millimeter or of a fraction of a millimeter offering reading facilities called, for example, the half-millimeter.
It is easy to see that the arrangement adopted has a serious advantage over direct measurement carried out by means of a comparator probe.
The amplitude of the movements of a comparator probe being limited, the possible measurements would be correspondingly.
We will see, on the other hand, by describing the new micrometer of FIG. 3, that the standard rod 2 can be of practically unlimited length and allow all the movements useful to carry out any measurement.
The end forming the contact finger of the feeler 5 is formed so as to meet the inclined face of the wolf teeth only at one point.
It is for this reason that the corresponding part of the probe is more inclined than the teeth of the side coming to be placed opposite the inclined plane of the latter and that, on the other side, a clearance 14 opposes any encounter with the next tooth, the teeth themselves also being exposed, as seen in: 15.
With the inclination of the dorsal faces of the teeth mentioned above, of 450, the amplitude of the displacement of the probe corresponds exactly to the amplitude of the displacement of the standard between two teeth.
It is obvious that by constituting teeth by threads or circular grooves, their precise size no longer presents any particular difficulty, the rectification of a thread or a groove being an easy operation.
The principle of measurement being thus exposed, here is how it is possible to constitute a typical measuring element, capable of being used in multiple high precision measuring devices.
Fig. 2 shows this element performing a measurement.
The member 16 is a threaded bar with wolf teeth meeting the conditions which have been stated for the standard 2 of FIG. 1.
This bar can move axially in a bushing 17, in which it is guided with precision by the rings 18 and 19.
The central section of the ring 19 is longitudinally grooved and cooperates without play with the corresponding longitudinal grooves 20 of an end rod encasing the bar 16 in its axial sliding. Said bar can thus slide, but not rotate about its axis.
At the opposite end, it is guided by a terminal rod 21, forming the feeler finger of the gauge 16.
The bush 17 has a rack 22 and can, in turn, move axially under the influence of a toothed ring 23 moved by hand, but not rotate around its axis.
Perpendieulement to the axis of movement common to the standard 16 and to the sleeve 17 moves the feeler 5, guided in a fixed part 6 of any frame not shown to which also belongs the stop 24.
It can be seen that by placing any object 25 to be measured between the stop 24 and the end 21 of the standard 16, it will be possible, by bringing the end of said standard into contact with said object, itself applied against the fixed stop 24, to measure the distance that this object occupies between these two parts. The measurement is made possible firstly by determining the row of the thread that the feeler 5 will encounter, and secondly by the depth at which said feeler can penetrate between the teeth formed by the threads.
The first of these quantities will provide, for example, the distance in millimeters from the stop 24 and the second the fractions of a millimeter to be added to it in order to obtain a high precision measurement.
The displacement of the sleeve 17 will be
via the toothed wheel 23, that
probe as indicated previously.
But, as the pressure exerted by the
rod 21 on object 25 could vary with the operator, this source of error must be eliminated, which is achieved by the arrangement between the standard 16 and the sleeve 17 of one or the other of the two springs 26 and 27 and the presence of two marks 28, one of which is on the standard, the other on the socket.
These marks being slightly offset, with respect to each other, as shown in the drawing, they will be brought opposite each other for each measurement, which forces the standard 16 to move back into the socket 17, against the action of spring 26, an amount ensuring a uniform pressure thereof. The measurement accuracy will thus be ensured by always equal pressure of the standard against the object to be measured.
If the standard, instead of carrying out external measurements, had to carry out internal measurements, being for that moved in the opposite direction to what we have just said, we would provide reference marks shifted inversely to what has been. drawn, and it is the spring 27 which would then come into play, it being understood that the same device will never include the two springs at the same time.
The fluted part 20 is intended to allow, by removing the element shown, to reassemble it after having made the standard rotate around its base. This allows, when after numerous measurements the probe 5 has worn the standard along one generator, to work along another generator on contact surfaces that are still intact.
The probe 5 is, of course, intended here anssi to transmit its movements to an indicator system by multiplying the amplitudes.
Instead, moreover, of determining the row of the thread yni is in contact with the feeler, it is obviously simpler to provide the sleeve 17, for example, with a scale or marks which, with a mark, respectively a scale of the frame supporting the probe and the fixed stop 24, indicates the displacements of the sleeve 17 relative to a starting point corresponding to the application of the finger 21 against said stop 24.
Each measurement then comes down to reading this displacement and to simultaneously reading the displacement of the probe 5 brought into contact with the standard 16. A scale in millimeters will be used, for example, in cooperation with a thread of millimeter. pitch, arranged so as to read the millimeters directly on the scale and the fractions on the mechanism actuated by the probe 5.
The stop 24 must be of adjustable position, to bring the assembly to zero each time. that one turns the standard 16 in the socket 17.
The high precision micrometer shown in fig. 3 uses the element just described.
In im frame 28, having a jaw 29, slides an element 30, similar to that of FIG. 2, with a rack 31 allowing it to be moved by means of the handwheel 32.
The measuring rod 33 of the standard of this element cooperating with the fixed stop, preferably adjustable, located at 34, emerges from the frame, from where it appears more or less, depending on the position of the element 30.
This position can be read in millimeters on the scale 35, while the fractions can be read on the micrometric scale 36, by the process just described.
The button 37, corresponding to the button 9 of FIG. 1, is used to insert the probe into the threads of the standard for each measurement, while at 38 we can see the two marks (28 of FIG. 2) which must be brought into coincidence at each measurement.
It is possible to base on the principle described measuring devices of all sizes, for all uses, for external or internal measurements, taper, etc.
