Device used to transport <B> paper </B> in a printing press. The invention relates to a device for transporting paper in a printing press.
Most rotary presses used in newspaper printing are constructed so that four type plates fit across each type cylinder and two around each cylinder. So a board covers roughly a quarter of the length of each cylinder and half of its periphery. In printing newspapers with a press having a given number of cylinders, a maximum number of pages can be printed equal to the number of sheets that the cylinders are capable of carrying.
However, if printing in what is called a "straight" pass, the number of pages is only half of the total press capacity, because the diametrically opposed plates on each cylinder are identical. This means that one printout is delivered for each half-revolution of the printing cylinders. With such a passage, it is possible to change the size of the print in sets of two pages each, increasing or decreasing the width of the web passing through the press in sets of one page wide.
When it is desired to obtain a higher production, it is necessary to have recourse to a so-called "mass" operation. This means that a first section of the print is carried around the cutting cylinder of the folder and associated with a second section of the print, the two sections being folded and delivered together in a well known manner. In a "mass" operation, the diametrically opposed plates on the printing cylinders are different. With a "mass" run, the size of the printout must "be changed in sets of four pages each.
As the size of the printout can vary from day to day, the need to modify it in sets of four pages is a very serious handicap, especially in small printing installations such as are used. for printing small town newspapers.
The device which is the subject of the invention is characterized in that it comprises a flexible element, means serving to advance said flexible element at a constant linear speed along a path comprising a curved part, of which the radius of curvature gradually decreases, and means for driving sheets, extending out of said flexible member in the direction of the radius of said curved part of said path and arranged so that the sheets driven by said means are accelerated when the flexible element moves along said curved pomtion of its path.
A press provided with an embodiment of the device. According to the invention will make it possible to increase the production by sets of two pages, when the printing is done "en masse". This is done by printing a special tape moving at half the speed of the regular tape (s), cutting the special tape into sheets, accelerating these sheets to full tape speed and securing them to the corresponding sections of the tape. 'im award winning trained with the other bands.
Thus, for example, the specialty tape may be printed in a two page width printing pair, operated at half speed, relative to at least one main printing pair. A one page wide tape feeds this extra torque, and after being printed on one side, the tape is turned over, passes through the same pair, and prints on the other side.
If the main printing assembly consists of two pairs each having a cylinder corresponding to a width of four sheets, this would, under ordinary conditions, give prints of two, four, six and eight pages in "straight" passage, and of eight, twelve and sixteen pages by printing "en masse". By inserting sheets cut from the special half speed web, printed on the additional torque, the "mass" prints can be increased in sets of two pages, instead of four.
With one embodiment in which the additional torque can work at both full and half speed, the straight passes could also produce a ten page printout and the "bulk" prints a twenty page printout.
In the past, attempts have been made to achieve the desired result of a "bulk" print with one section containing twice as many pages as the other, but this has always failed, because there was no mechanism. to combine sheets, able to place the special sheet exactly @ in the right place relative to the belts at full speed.
An attempt was made to partially cut the sheets coming from the strip at half speed and to lead each of them between the strips at full speed, where it was clamped between these strips, which was to suppress the freedom of the sheet and bring it to full speed. But variations in the. resistance of the spacers carrying the special sheet towards this strip have the effect of placing it askew, on one side or the other, or of delaying the moment when it reaches full speed, so that the proposed process does not was not successful.
By means of one embodiment of the device according to the invention, the special sheet can be completely cut from a strip at half speed and accelerated completely to full speed, and then it can be, placed, relative to the other bands, so that a faulty placement cannot occur.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, a printing press provided with an embodiment of the device according to the invention.
Fig. 1 is a vertical section of said rotary printing press, this section being taken along line 1-1 of FIG. 3 and seen in the direction of the arrows.
Fig. 2 is a plan of the press shown in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a side view of the press. Fig. 4 is an elevation, - part in section - and on an enlarged scale, of a device used to cut and accelerate a sheet.
Fig. 5 is a plan of the device shown in FIG. 4.
Fig. 6 is a section on a scale enlarged by the line 6 = 6 of FIG. 4 = and seen in the direction of the arrows, and fig. 7 is a horizontal section, taken by line 7-7 of FIG. 1, showing a mechanism for varying the speed of an additional torque of the press.
The press shown comprises a frame made up of two side parts 1 and 2, on which are mounted, so as to be able to rotate, printing cylinders 3 and 4 which cooperate respectively with printing cylinders 5 and 6 and constitute two pairs. the main printing elements of the press. Hollow cylinders 7 and 7 'schematically represent the inking mechanism serving to supply ink respectively to the character cylinders 3 and 4. The inking mechanism being of a known type, it is not necessary to represent it, nor to describe it in detail.
The main printing torques can be actuated by a motor 12 connected by a chain 10 to a toothed wheel 8 mounted on the shaft of the printing cylinder 5 (Figs. 2 and 3). According to the usual practice, a gear 14 (FIG. 3) is provided for actuating the impression cylinder 6 by the impression cylinder 5 and the impression cylinders 3 and 4 by the corresponding impression cylinders 5 and 6.
Next to the main printing unit is mounted an additional printing couple with a width corresponding to two plates, and whose main parts are a printing cylinder 21, a character cylinder 22 and an inking mechanism 23. cylinders 21 and 22 are mounted so as to be able to rotate in flanges 24 and 25 (fig. 2) -and are connected by toothed wheels 26 and 27. The additional torque can be actuated either at half the speed of the main printing assembly, or at the full speed of that assembly. This is accomplished by a speed change mechanism, shown in fig. 7.
An angle pinion 28 is attached to the end of the impression cylinder 5 and meshes with an angle pinion 29, carried by a shaft 30 which is mounted and can rotate in supports 31 and 32 attached to the flange 25 of the additional couple and the. part 2 of the main assembly. A set of two toothed wheels 34, one of which, 35, corresponding to half speed, and the other, 36, to full speed, is fixed on the shaft 30. In the supports 31 -and 32 is mounted and can rotate an auxiliary shaft 37, on which is slid an element 38 having two toothed wheels of different diameters.
The wheel 39 of this element meshes with the wheel 35 of the set of two toothed wheels 34, in the position shown, to actuate the additional torque at half speed. If it is desired to operate the additional torque at full speed, a lever 40 is moved to the left and, by a journal 41, the element 38 is moved to the right, so that the second wheel 42 of this element comes mesh with wheel 36 to change the speed of the additional torque to that of the main assembly. A collar 43 restricts the rightward movement of element 38 and, when the full speed gear is engaged, the half speed gear is disengaged.
An angle pinion 44, attached to the auxiliary shaft 37, meshes with an angle pinion 45 attached to the impression cylinder 21, which completes the coupling of the additional torque to the main assembly.
The other end of the printing cylinder 6 actuates a folding machine via a clutch 48 (fig. 3). This folder is of known construction and comprises a folding cylinder 49 cooperating with a conventional cutting cylinder for cutting and folding the finished print. Folding cylinders 51 place the folded prints on pieces 53, which deposit them on a release belt 54, in the usual manner.
With the arrangement shown in the embodiment shown, it is generally desirable to use two half-width bands, that is to say two bands, the width of which corresponds to two pages, to feed the paper. 'main assembly, and a single strip, the width of which corresponds to one page, to supply the additional torque.
A strip W, coming from a roller 56, passes over a tension roller 66, over guide rollers 67, 68, 69 and 70, in the main assembly, between the impression cylinder 5 and the carrier cylinder. character 3, where it is printed on one side, passes over a guide roller 58 and between impression cylinder 6 and character cylinder 4, where it is printed on the other side, then exits and passes over a roll of mistletoe 71.
From the guide roller 71, the web W is carried over a turning rod 72, guide rollers 73 and 74 (fig. 3), a compensator roller 75 and a guide roller 76, on a roller 77, where it is fixed to another band W1 and descends through a folding funnel 78 towards the folder.
In a similar fashion, the web W, starting from a roll 55, passes alongside the web W, is led around the tension roller 79, the guide rollers 80, 69 and 70, through the main assembly. , where it is printed on both sides, and up to a guide roll 81, from where it goes to a turning rod 82 and over a guide roll 83, a compensating roll 84 and a guide roll 85 to roll 77.
A Wz strip from a roll 57 is treated in the same way; it passes over a tensioning roller 79a (fig. 3), in the length of the tensioning roller 79, over the guide roller 80, then over rollers 86, 87 -and 87a, from where it passes in the torque im scoop 21-22.
The web W, is then driven over a roller 88, the reversing links 89 and 90, which turn the web, a guide roller 91 and comes back over the roller 87a and through the pair 21-22 where it is printed on the opposite side by a board next to the board that first printed the WZ tape. The WZ web then passes over a roll 92 and an inverting rod 93, a roll 94 and a ditch roll 95, to a cutoff torque 96-97, where the half-speed sheets are completely cut from the.
tape and carried to the roller 77 by a device for accelerating the sheets.
This device for accelerating the sheets at half speed is employed, when it is desired to make a section of the paper of one sheet or of two pages wider than the other section, and thus to increase the extent of the production of this difference. .
For this purpose, the additional torque is operated at half speed, that is, the band W.2, before reaching the cut-off torque 96-97, runs at half the. speed of bands W and W, Referring in particular to figs. 4, 5 and 6, it can be seen that a cutter 98 is provided in the cutting cylinder 97 and cooperates with the support roller 96, which may be made of a material such as hardened rubber. The knife 98 cuts the TVA strip into sheets.
A piece of wood, supported by springs against the cutting cylinder <B> 97, </B> may be provided to push the cut sheets past the knife 98 in a well known manner.
The cutting cylinder shaft 97 carries two sets of double toothed wheels 101 and 102 mounted and rotatable on it, at opposite ends of the cylinder, as seen in FIG. 5. Two double chains 103 and 104 pass respectively over the toothed wheels 101 and 102. The chain 103 moves along a curved guide 107 and passes over a double toothed wheel 105 attached to a release cylinder 106. The chain 104 is disposed in a similar manner to move parallel to chain 103 along a curved guide 60 and pass over a double toothed wheel 61 attached to the other end of the release cylinder 106.
The guides 107 and 60 have a variable radius of curvature which decreases from a maximum, at their ends where the chains come into contact with the guides, to a minimum, where the guides end, near the toothed wheels 105 and 61, whose spokes are smaller than those of toothed wheels 101 and 102.
The roller 77 is actuated by an auxiliary shaft 108, via angle gears 109 and <B> 110, </B> the power being supplied by a toothed wheel 111 connected by suitable connections with the control of the main set. A toothed wheel 112. attached to the roller 77, meshes with a toothed wheel 113 attached to the cylinder 106.
Thus, the double chains 103 and 104 are operated by the double toothed wheels 105 and 61, pass under and along the lower surfaces of the guides 107 and 60 and around the toothed wheels 101 and 102 which can rotate freely on the cylinder shaft. cutter, the direction of chain movement being indicated by the arrows in fig. 4.
The connection for the actuation of the chains 103 and 104 is such that they move with a speed equal to half the speed of the bands W and W, The cutting cylinder 97 is actuated by the auxiliary shaft 108, by the intermediate of angle gears 62 and 63, at a speed such that its peripheral speed equals the speed of the band WZ. The backing roller 96 is actuated by the cutting cylinder 97 at the same peripheral speed by the intermediary of suitable gears, not shown.
Chains 103 and 104 carry pins 116 and 117 suitable for transporting paper and rigidly mounted on these chains. As best seen in fig. 6, these pins are rigidly attached to the chains and extend from them inwardly to positions within the edges of the sheet of paper and then downward a length substantially equal to radius of wheels 105 and 61, so as to pierce the sheet near its marginal edges. In the embodiment shown, there are four pins arranged at points also distant from each double chain.
As shown in fig. 4, the neck couple fear 96-97 cut a sheet from the half-speed belt WZ and the leading edge of this sheet is pierced by a pin 116R, it being understood that a similar pin 117B on the other chain 104 simultaneously pierces the opposite edge of the sheet. The pins 116B and 117B enter grooves 64 of the support cylinder 96, when they pierce the strip, as shown in FIG. 5.
A lower guide 118 is provided to support the sheets after they have been cut and advanced and, as best seen in FIG. 4, this guide continues almost parallel to and near guides 107 and 60 to a point adjacent to the line joining the centers of release cylinder 106 and roller 77. The sheets are held against guide 118 by upper guides 58 , 59 and 65, which are distributed laterally over the width of the sheet, as seen in FIGS. 5 and 6.
The guides 58, 59 and 65 pass respectively through grooves 130, 131 and 132 formed on the surface of the release cylinder 106, leave this cylinder at its point of tangency with the roller 77 and continue parallel <B> to </B> the surface of the roller 77 to a point close to that where the strip W i. comes into contact with the roller 77, as shown in fig. 4.
From the position of spindle 116B to that of spindle 116A, the cut sheets move in a straight line. As the chains 103 and 104 start to move around the guides 107 and 60, the outer ends of the pins, where they pierce the sheet, are accelerated by the shortening of the radius of curvature of the chain track. as determined by the guides, so that when the front end of the sheet reaches the line of centers, between cylinder 106 and roller 77,
where the path of the chains is circular and has a radius exactly equal to half that of the circle described by the end of the pins which carries the. sheet, the sheet travels at twice the speed at which the web was cut Wz,. or exactly at full web speed. This is due to the fact that the average radius of the toothed wheels 105 and 61 of the chains is exactly equal to half the radius of the track on which the tips of the pins which pierce the sheet move, that is to say at the half the radius of the clearance cylinder 106.
The pins 116 and 117 respectively enter grooves <B> 133 </B> and 134 of the roller <I> 77 and </I> stitch through the web W, which comes from the bottom, as shown in fig. 4. Tapes 119 and 120, passing around part of release cylinder 106 and over pulleys 121, serve to release the cut sheet from pins 116 and 117 and bring it to the surface of roll 77. These tapes, along with the guides 58, 59 and 65, press the cut sheet against the strip W and place it between the strips W and W1, as the three strips pass over the roll 77.
In order to glue the special sheet exactly in its place, one can use a gluing device comprising a tray 122 containing glue (fig. 3), carrying a roller 123 actuated by the roller 77 by means of a chain 124. Roller 123 applies glue to the edge of a disc 126, which is actuated by suitable means, at a speed such that its peripheral speed equals the speed of the web W.
Disc 126 is notched at 127, so that it places glue on strip W, so that sections of this strip with a line of glue near one of the edges alternate with other sections. not wearing any. The operation of the mechanism for applying the glue is set so that the glue is applied to the parts of the web W which correspond to the cut sheets of the half-speed web W2, but there is none. on the other sections of the W band.
In action, the cutting torque <B> 96-97 </B> cuts sheets from the web at half speed WZ in succession and the chain and spindle mechanism successively accelerates these sheets to full web speed. The linear speed of the chains 103 and 104 is the same as that of the half-speed belt W # .; it is therefore also equal to the peripheral speed of the cutting cylinder 97. Each accelerated sheet is separated from the next sheet by an interval equal to the length of the sheet.
Each sheet reaches full web speed, as its leading edge advances toward the center line, between cylinder 106 and roll 77, and at this point it can be glued along one edge of the web at full speed. W, if desired. The W1 tape can then be applied to the yV and W # tapes. and the superimposed bands then go, passing through the folding funnel 78, to the folder and cutter. The sheets from the half-speed web are completely detached from it before being accelerated, and tearing of the web is thus avoided.
The sheets are placed in exact correspondence with the strips at full speed by the acceleration and transport mechanism. It will be observed that just as the pins 116 and 117 accelerate each sheet to full web speed, these pins pierce the web W at full speed and thus attach the sheet to the web.
At the same time, the sheet is glued to the strip W, carried therewith on the roller 77 and brought into contact with the strip W1. The arrangement described places the special sheet in every other section of the printout and thus enables the formation of a printout having in one section more than one page. in the other. When the sections are assembled in the folder and cutter, the result is a complete printout, the size of which can be increased by one sheet or two pages in addition to those of a print in which the W-strip is coming from an additional couple is not employed.
In the embodiment described, the additional neck can, if desired, run at full speed and the strip which comes from it be brought into direct contact with the bands at full speed W and 11, from the main printing unit.
Such a connection has been shown in fig. 4, in which the web W @ has been shown in dotted lines passing directly from the roll 95 and around a roll 135 in contact with the web ZTr. When this arrangement is employed, the actuation of chains 103 and 104 is disconnected and tapes 119 and 120 are removed or moved away from the surface of roller 77.
