3. Der so bewirkte Druckabfall wird als Anzeige für die Zugabe eines weiteren An teils der polymerisierbaren Verbindung be i nutzt, worauf dieZugabe unmittelbar getätigt wird.
Man kann auch zu- niielist in bekannter Weise aus dem wässeri gen Serum und Vinylchlorid eine Emulsion des llonomeren herstellen, zum Beispiel bei Zininiertemperatur. und diese "l_onoemul- ,ion" alsdann dem auf Polymerisationstempe- ratur gehaltenen Autoklaven zuführen und in der gleichen Weise, wie oben erwähnt, ver fahren;
Process for carrying out polymerizations. The production of polymers from vinyl compounds, such as vinyl ethers, vinyl esters, vinyl cyanides, vinyl carboxylic acids and their derivatives (acrylic and methacrylic compounds), divinyls and substituted divinyls, vinylbenzene and their mixtures,
Nowadays, it is usually carried out in such a way that the monomeric substances are exposed to the action of catalysts in liquid form, undiluted, dissolved or emulsified in periodic or continuous operation at certain temperatures. This results in significant difficulties on an industrial scale, because the reaction is highly egothermic and a uniform course of the reaction is easily and often prevented by coincidences that were previously difficult to perceive.
The spontaneous reaction of larger quantities leads to temperature and pressure increases that can reach the extent of dangerous explosions; however, even smaller temperature fluctuations have an unfavorable effect on the properties of the polymers. Therefore, usually only small amounts of the monomeric substances are exposed to the polymerisation conditions by working continuously or only gradually introducing the substance to be polymerised into the polymerisation chamber.
However, a dosage corresponding to the polymerization rate can hardly be achieved because the determination of whether the polymerization has started or is delayed and, in particular, how far it has progressed,
difficult and usually not with the required speed to determine. Even with this method of working, even larger amounts of polymerizable substance can accumulate in the reaction space and in turn lead to the dangers and difficulties mentioned at the beginning.
The conditions in the emulsion process are particularly tricky. For example, the emulsion in the polymerization room can accidentally break prematurely, as a result of which the reaction conditions change radically and significant difficulties arise.
A special rule has now been found for technical action when carrying out polymerizations, according to which the concentration of the polymerizable compound in the polymerization room can easily be adapted to the course of the reaction and measured with sufficient accuracy so that pressure and temperature are below all ITni - read the levels in the desired area.
This rule consists of a combination of the following measures: 1. One works in the vicinity of that pressure which corresponds to the saturation pressure of the compound to be polymerized at the desired polymerization temperature.
2. The concentration of the compound to be polymerized in the polymerization room is kept at the limit where the saturation pressure is undershot due to the disappearance of a relatively small amount of liquid, polymerizable compound. This disappearance is due to the polymerization process. that is, by converting the polymerizable compound into the polymerized form.
3. The pressure drop caused in this way is used as an indicator for the addition of a further proportion of the polymerizable compound, whereupon the addition is made immediately.
4. Finally, the addition of polymerizable compound is interrupted as soon as the above-mentioned working pressure (saturation pressure) has re-established.
The concentration limit. in -v elcher holds the compounds to be polymerized in the polymerization room, is where these compounds are still present in the smallest amount as a pure liquid.
The achievement of this state when the polymerization vessel is sent can be seen from the fact that at the same temperature the pressure in the polymerisation vessel no longer increases and remains constant even with further addition of the compounds to be polymerized. As soon as this point is reached, or at least shortly thereafter, the feed is interrupted while the new addition of the polymerizable ble. Connections are only made again when a new drop in pressure is noticeable.
The maintenance of this condition can easily be done by hand with the help of the usual measuring instruments and dosing devices or by coupling the Nessinstrunientes. the metering device can be achieved automatically with great accuracy in a known manner.
The existence of the duz, desired state can be easily determined at any time by the pressure drop occurring, even if the observer should not know the preceding processes too due and does not want to wait for the pressure drop. In such a case, he only needs, for example, to let gas blow off by opening a valve until a slightly lower pressure - of course at the same temperature - remains; then the limit according to the invention is undershot with certainty, whereupon it is fed in the manner described, until the pressure is constant.
The possibility of determining the respective polymerization state by blowing off gas naturally only intervenes if the course of the reaction is not sufficiently observed or registered.
The supply or removal of heat required to maintain the desired polymerization temperature is carried out in the generally customary manner, for example by means of suitable baths or coolers. The temperature can easily be kept constant within narrow limits with simple means, even with very large systems; because according to the inventive working method, an accidental reaction surge of unintended dimensions can never take place.
The dosage respectively. The polymerizable compound is supplied in accordance with the pressure profile in the polymerization vessel by actuating a corresponding device by hand or automatically. For example, the compound to be polymerized is kept ready in a receiver by means of pressurized nitrogen under a higher pressure than in the polymerization vessel, or the receiver is kept at a higher temperature than the polymerization liquid and the feed is regulated by a valve so that the pressure according to the invention is just in the autoclave preserved.
You can also control a pump in an automatic manner through the pressure difference described. In this case, the pump starts when the pressure drops until the pressure is constant again by adding the compounds to be polymerized; you can possibly do without a pressure-resistant template. The amount supplied in each case can be determined using appropriate display devices, for example using a scale or a level tube.
The mode of operation according to the invention can be used and varied in many ways. For example, you can work at a certain temperature or according to a certain temperature program, as is suggested for some polymers, by polymerizing a certain amount, for example at 50 ° C. and another amount at 60 ° C., each according to the invention maintains easily ascertainable concentration. The polymerization can be carried out with or without a solvent and diluent.
The emulsion polymerization can be carried out particularly advantageously according to the procedure according to the invention. As long as the emulsion in the polymerization vessel still contains small amounts of emulsified, polymerizable compound, the saturation pressure of the polymerizable compound is present in the reaction space.
The liquid phase is also here through the polymerization; that is, the emulsified, polymerisable compound in the emulsion liquid is made to disappear by forming solid, emulsified polymer.
Immediately after its formation, the pressure drops below the saturation pressure of the polymerizable compound, so that care must be taken to ensure that small amounts of fresh, polymerizable compound, be it as such (which is immediately emulsified) or already in emulsion, is fed to the reaction vessel until the said saturation pressure is reached again. In this case too, only small amounts of polymerizable compound can be present in the polymerization vessel.
This procedure can be used both for the polymerization of individual compounds and for the production of copolymers, setting the saturation pressure of the lowest-boiling, polymerizable component; in this case one has a measure of the concentration of the lowest-boiling component, which is advantageous for following the course of the polymerization.
You can also work at any pressure, provided the temperature is chosen so that the saturation pressure is available, for example vinyl acetate can be polymerized in this way at around 400 mm mercury pressure (i.e. in a vacuum) and 54 C, with a valuable polymer is obtained.
The method offers the advantage of carrying out polymerizations at a low concentration of accumulable substances quickly and regularly without having to fear spontaneous reactions in large quantities. A large reduction in the rate of polymerization should have been expected with this procedure, since the concentration of the compound to be polymerized is kept small according to the invention. Surprisingly, however, this is not the case.
The polymerizations proceed rapidly throughout, and it has even been found that in many cases they take place more rapidly than in the previously known processes.
Another advantage that cannot be expected in view of the dilution is that the polymers produced according to the invention are of excellent quality, which is presumably due to the uniform course of the reaction.
The present invention will be explained with reference to the following example, without, however, being restricted thereto.
Example: A stirred autoclave is connected to a template by a line, with the line as a dip tube, for example. leads to the bottom of the template. The template contains around 500 parts of liquid vinyl chloride at room temperature. that means under a pressure of about 3 Atni. The stirred autoclave contains 1000 parts of Nasser,? Parts sodium stearate, 1.
Part of sodium carbonate and 5 parts of potassium persulfate. Like a thermostat, the contents of the autoclave are automatically kept at a constant temperature by a water bath equipped with heating and cooling elements, namely at 45 C T 1.
(The temperature can also be kept within narrower limits.) After the temperature of 45 "C has been set in the autoclave liquid, vinyl chloride is injected with the stirrer running rapidly with the aid of a pump built into the connection line between the receiver and the autoclave. until the pressure has risen to about 6.5 atin. and remains constant.
This constant pressure is achieved after injection of 50 parts of vinyl chloride. The pressure remains constant within the next 20 minutes, and therefore no vinyl chloride is applied during this period.
After this period of time has elapsed, the pressure begins to decrease, so that one can with easily. Increasing speed has to pump almost continuously, uni <initial pressure of 6..5 atm. to maintain. After a total of? Hours are 80 parts of vinyl chloride absorbed in this way.
Now the supply of vinyl chloride is finally shut off, and the polymerization mass is kept at the same temperature of 45 ° C. for a further 30 minutes, the pressure being about 5 atm. zuriicl @ goes. Then the excess vinyl chloride is blown off.
The contents of the autoclave now consist of a milk-like liquid with a content of 250 parts of polyvinyl chloride. The polymer can be isolated from this latex in a known manner in pure form in a flour-fine state.
It is also possible to remove only part of the latex, add a corresponding amount of new serum and, as described above, continue polymerizing, whereby a productive continuous working method is achieved.
An emulsion of the monomer can also be prepared in a known manner from the aqueous serum and vinyl chloride, for example at tinizing temperature. and then feed this "ionoemul- ion" to the autoclave, which is kept at the polymerization temperature, and proceed in the same way as mentioned above;
A tubular autoclave or a U-Rolir is expediently used for this mode of operation. Ani. According to the rule according to the invention, the mono-expansion is added at one end, and the finished latex is removed at the other.
