Man erhält also Gerbstoffe mit ver- hzltnismässig hohem Nichtgerbstoffgehalt.

Process for the production of a tanning agent. It is known that sulphonation of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons and condensation of the sulphonic acids obtained with formaldehyde can produce tannins. The products obtained in this way, however, only have a relatively low filling capacity.
If one sulphonates with a comparatively large excess of sulfuric acid, one can increase the filling power of the tanning material by condensation with aromatic oxyalcohols after the form a'.debyd condensation. Even better filling tannins are obtained if partially sulfonated phenol-aldehyde condensation products are also added. The excess sulfuric acid in these products is rendered harmless by neutralization.
So tanning agents are obtained with a relatively high non-tanning agent content.
If you want to produce tanning agents with a lower non-tanning agent content and therefore sulfate with less acid, you have to condense the sulfonic acid with more formaldehyde in order to obtain products that are readily soluble in water. However, this condensation takes a relatively long time, and tannins are obtained whose filling capacity is not yet great.
It has now been found that a tanning agent is obtained by sulphonating naphthalene until partial water solubility is achieved and by subsequent treatment with formaldehyde if sulphonated, resol-like condensates of formaldehyde and technical tricresol are not added during the condensation until they are completely soluble in water.
This gives a tanning material with good filling capacity and a favorable ratio of tanning material to non-tanning material. Another tech@nis.eher advantage is that the formaldehyde condensation is completed in a considerably shorter time, in this way less than half the time required for the condensation of the sulfonic acid alone.
