Description
Process for making a substance containing glycerin with similar physical properties.
The present patent relates to a method for producing a substance with glycerin-like physical properties, such as B. viscosity and melting point using formaldehyde, urea and ammonium hydrate.
It has already been suggested.
To condense formaldehyde with urea with the addition of ammonium hydrate. It has been shown, however, that preparations produced in this way are neither sufficiently stable nor have sufficient hygroscopicity nor sufficiently low melting point.
The process according to the invention is characterized in that ammonium hydrate is added to a mixture of urea and formaldehyde at room temperature, this temperature being maintained constant, the mass is then heated at at least 90 ° C. to the desired viscosity and then in a stabilizer containing it Introduces the vessel and leaves it to itself until the end of the reaction, and then neutralizes it.
The mass can be heated at constant temperatures between 90 and 125 ° C, preferably at 95-100 ° C. As stabilizers z. B. cadmium or zinc respectively. a mixture of these is particularly effective.
Example:
10 parts by weight of formaldehyde were mixed with 5 parts by weight of urea in a kettle at 20 ° C. and 4 parts by weight of ammonium hydrate were added to this mixture, taking care that the temperature always remained the same during the entire process. The mass was then heated to 95-100 ° C for 1 hour until a viscosity of 25 Be was reached and the mass was then transferred to an open vessel containing traces of pulverized cadmium, and the mass was then poured for 5 days left to yourself.
The alkaline class was then neutralized with salicylic acid.
For neutralization l; It is also possible to use acetic acid or similar acids, whereby the neutralization is not carried out all at once, but in at least two time-separated intervals. This avoids the bad conditions which can easily arise when the whole batch is neutralized and which consist in the neutralized product becoming alkaline again after 2 to 3 days and a sediment forming during this time has dropped out.
The product obtained is crystal clear, has a melting point of about −93 ° C. and is soluble in water and alcohol without clouding. The product produced according to the invention is intended to be used as a glycerine exchange staff in the cosmetic industry and as an anti-freeze for automobile coolers.
