B. in Alkoholen, wie Methanol. r'thanol, Butanol, in Aceton, Diaeetonallzo- hol, Eisessig u. a.
Process for the preparation of an oxidation product of aldehyde resin. It is known from German Patent No. 395053 to make resins made from aliphatic aldehydes, in particular from acetaldehyde and crotonaldehyde, soluble in borax and sol solution by oxidizing treatment.
The products obtained in this way, lightened to yellow compared to the orange color of the original resins, have a completely resinous character, they can be melted and rolled out into leaves; they are soluble in the usual resin solvents, especially like shellac also in borax and so @ da solution and like copals and the like in fatty oils.
It has now surprisingly been found that it is possible to carry out the oxidation beyond this known resin stage and, yes, to open up a new type of oxidation product of aldehyde resin. Here and in the following, aldehyde resin is always to be understood as meaning the resin that is obtained in a known manner by treating @cetaldehyde or crotonaldehyde with alkali, whereby it should be noted that each of these two aldehydes leads to the same resin,
because even if aoetaldehyde is used, the first stage in the resinification process is always the formation of crotonaldehyde.
The method forming the subject of the present patent is characterized in that the aldehyde resin is subjected to an oxidation treatment with hydrogen peroxide via the formation of easily meltable resin product and this treatment is continued until a pale yellowish to almost colorless product has arisen is that it is soluble in ammonia, especially when a little bit of fuel is added, and produces foam power when its alkaline solutions are neutralized.
The oxidation is expediently carried out in the presence of oxidation catalysts. Furthermore, the oxidation can be preceded by oxidation of the aldehyde resin with one another. Oxidizing agent as hydrogen peroxide precede.
It remains to be seen whether the presence of water, which is always present when using hydrogen peroxide in solution, has an influence on the course of the oxidation process and on the property of the reaction product Has. Signs can be interpreted in terms of such an influence.
If the empirical composition of the aldehyde resins is cited with -) 2.8 / ö 0, the oxidation stages can perhaps be ordered as follows:

It no longer shows the slight fusibility, but rather infusibility with increasing oxygen content. It is yellowish to almost colorless. It is insoluble in some typical laughing solvents. It is insoluble in fatty oils, and it appears to decompose when heated in them.
It is soluble to partially soluble in borax and soda solutions. In contrast, the higher the degree of oxidation, the increasing solubility is characteristic - e.g. Sometimes already in the cold - in ammonia and caustic soda and also in water.
Chemically, it has an increased oxygen content and a relationship with unsaturated oxyacids.
The following examples show in comparison to DRP. No. 395053. the difference in the manufacturing process and, accordingly, in the chemical composition of the treatment product. If you work according to example 2 of the DR.P. No. 395053, see above, one does not get beyond a certain oxidation level. Example 1:

Incs 50 hours of passing oxygen through, you see the original reddish brown. darkening of the resin in the direction of a lighter, yellow-brown color.
The reaction solution was precipitated in ten times the amount of water with stirring, and a yellow amorphous bream was obtained in an amount of 87% of the total amount of raw resins used.
According to its elemental composition, it did not show a very considerably increased oxygen content.

Here too, surprisingly, several stages of oxidation can be ascertained. This can be followed both when working in the lap of a common solvent such as acetic acid, and even more clearly in the slow-motion oxidation in aqueous suspension.
With this, standing and occasional stirring, the bright orange colored aldehyde resin powder lightened to sulfur yellow gradually over the course of 14 days. This was followed by a second oxidation process at room temperature within a few weeks, externally evident from the fading of the yellow color. Once initiated, the oxidation process came to an end after 4-6 weeks at room temperature.
The oxidation process could be promoted when the aqueous reaction suspension was stirred through or when the reaction mixture was ground through in the ball mill and the like.
The portion that has gone into the aqueous solution and has the same or a higher oxygen content can be partially recovered by evaporation, by means of external salts and the like.
If glacial acetic acid is used as the solvent, the reaction is faster. Depending on the amount of hydrogen peroxide used, it can lead to boiling boiling after just a few hours. Nevertheless, the reaction takes place here in isolable, time-extended stages. The oxygen content of the remaining part that remains dissolved in water when it precipitates, which increases with increasing oxidative effectiveness and evaporates through a, z. T. can also be obtained by looking is generally of about. of the same order of magnitude.
A fundamental difference in the course of oxidation in a solvent such as glacial acetic acid or in aqueous suspension has not been found. It is advisable to keep the addition of hydrogen peroxide (at 30% by volume) not significantly below a weight ratio to the used i: aldehyde resin of 1: 1 when blowing out non-oxidized aldehyde resin.
By increasing the addition, the Oxvdation @ vorg-aii-- can naturally be accelerated - especially when working in solution.

After 14 days - the orange color was visibly turned into chrome gel). In the course of a further period of time, there was a change in two directions: a lightening of the color and a bleaching of the resin powder into a viscous mass.
