If a solution of aloin and formaldehyde is mixed with a condensation agent, z. B. concentrated sulfuric acid, a new compound separates as a yellow, flaky one Precipitate, which is not soluble in water, but soluble in alkalis.

This Condensationsproduct is in the dry state a light yellow, very bulky, amorphous powder which upon heating to 260 0 only weakly tans, is then gradually blackened and läfst detect no foaming to 283 °; In contrast to the ΑΙοϊη of water and organic solvents (only alcohol dissolves it in traces), of ammonia and / or. not in carbonic acid alkalis, but absorbed like this by caustic soda; from this solution, which turns red-yellow when heated, it is separated out again by acids. If the condensation product (0.001 g) is poured over with concentrated sulfuric acid (about 2 ecm), it dissolves with a yellow color, which changes to red-yellow when heated. It (0.005 g) dissolves in concentrated nitric acid (about 2 ecm) with a color resembling a fairly concentrated solution of potassium dichromate; the hot solution does not deposit any flakes on the addition of water (15 to 20 ecm) and, with caustic soda or ammonia, gives a color similar to that of a loproc. Corresponds to platinum chloride solution and disappears almost completely on acidification. If a few milligrams of the condensation product is poured over with very dilute sodium hydroxide solution, it dissolves with a yellow color, which is somewhat intensified by the addition of potassium dichromate solution; If, however, this solution is boiled, it turns darker in color, becomes red-yellow and finally brown-red; this color persists in a somewhat lighter shade even when acidified.

As far as the composition is concerned, which one can be calculated for a compound either according to the equation:

I. C17 H16O1 + HCOH= C H2 : C11 H16 O1 + H2 O, I. C 17 H 16 O 1 + HCOH = CH 2 : C 11 H 16 O 1 + H 2 O,

II. 2C17A8O7 +HCOH=CHi ,C11 H11 O1 II.2C 17 A 8 O 7 + HCOH = CHi , C 11 H 11 O 1

H11 O1 H 11 O 1

+ H2O+ H 2 O

entstanden wäre, die folgenden Werthe:the following values would have arisen:

C =. 62,42 pCt., C =. 62.42 pct.,

H= 5,20 - , H = 5.20 -,

bezw. C = 61,76 - ,respectively C = 61.76 -,

H= 5,29 - . H = 5.29 -.

The average result of three elemental analyzes was: C = 62.48 pCt., H = 5.35 pCt .; accordingly the condensation seems to have taken place according to the first equation.

Beispiel:Example:

Eine heifse Lösung von 10 kg Alo'in in 20 kg "Wasser und 10 kg 4oproc. Formaldehyd wird mit 10 kg concentrirter Schwefelsäure ver-A hot solution of 10 kg of alo'in in 20 kg "water and 10 kg 4oproc. Formaldehyde is treated with 10 kg of concentrated sulfuric acid

■assumes that the condensation product separates out as a yellow, flaky, partly resinous precipitate which becomes powdery after washing out the sulfuric acid with water. The product is then completely washed out, pressed and dried. ■

The compound is said to be used for medicinal purposes and has considerable advantages before the alo'in, as it has a more lasting effect due to its poor solubility and not the has the intense bitter taste of alo'in.
