Pour résister aux efforts de réaction dir- gés suivant les flèches F1 et F2, la couronne 8 peut avantageusement être réalisée de la manière suivante: Deux âmes circulaires 13 et 14 constituées par des câbles métalliques ou par des tringles arment les bords de la couronne 8, ces âmes qui sont reliées par des frettes 15 disposées parallèlement les uns aux autres, comme montré fig. 3, sont constituées par des fils ou des câbles en coton ou en acier ou en toute autre matière et sont rendues adhérentes par vulcanisation au tissu caoutchouté 16 dans lequel elles sont enrobées de manière à cons tituer ainsi une sorte de bague inextensible en largeur (sens des flèches F1, F2);
Elastic wheel. In order to make vehicle wheels elastic, it has already been proposed to connect the rim to the hub using blocks distributed over the periphery or else using elastic rings replacing all these blocks.
This arrangement, if it meets the desired objective to a certain extent, does not however seem to ensure sufficient elasticity in the case in particular where the tire must be inflated to a high pressure while allowing the wheel only movements perpendicular to its axis. .
The present invention relates to an elastic wheel meeting these desiderata. This wheel is characterized in that the connecting means between its central web and a flange integral with its rim, the web and the flange being located in two planes perpendicular to the axis of the wheel, comprise, on the one hand, at least one elastic element compressed in the axial direction between the flange and the web, on the other hand, at least one practically inextensible element bearing on the web and the flange to maintain the elastic element in the compressed state, 'elastic element and the practically inexten sible element being arranged on circles having the same axis as the wheel.
The elastic element can form a continuous ring; Likewise, the practically inextensible element can affect the shape of a continuous crown.
The appended drawing represents two embodiments of the invention given by way of non-limiting examples.
Fig. 1 is a section through an elastic wheel produced in accordance with the present invention.
Fig. 2. is a view similar to FIG. 1, the wheel being shown in a position corresponding to a momentary radial deformation caused, for example, by an impact. Fig. 3 is a developed plan view of the retaining crown, this plan view being taken partially cut away.
Fig. 4 is a detail view relating to an alternative embodiment.
Fig. 5 is, in elevation, a partial view showing an alternative embodiment of an elastic wheel.
Fig. 6 is a section taken along line VI-VI of FIG. 5.
Fig. 7 is a section taken along line VII-VII of FIG. 5.
The rim 1 (fig. 1) is integral with a flange or disc 2 disposed opposite the outer edge 3 of the web of the wheel, the central part 4 of which is shaped in the usual way, to be assembled to the hub at the wheel. 'using bolts 6.
In the space left free between the flange 2 and the web 3, a rubber ring 7 is inserted.
This ring 7 which, at the time of its assembly, received a strong compression, is hand held in this state with the aid of an inextensible ring or crown 8, the edges of which present bulges or parts in excess. 8a, 8b. The bead 8a bears externally at 9 against the edge of the flange 2; The bead 8b is housed in a groove 5 of the web and bears at 10 against the web 3. under the effect of the compression of the ring 7.
Annular linings or flanges 11 and 12 fixed respectively to the flanges 2 and to the wall 3, as can be seen in the drawing, ensure that the crown 8 is held in place correctly.
To withstand the reaction forces directed along the arrows F1 and F2, the ring 8 can advantageously be produced as follows: Two circular cores 13 and 14 formed by metal cables or by rods arm the edges of the ring 8 , these souls which are connected by hoops 15 arranged parallel to each other, as shown in FIG. 3, consist of threads or cables of cotton or steel or any other material and are made adherent by vulcanization to the rubberized fabric 16 in which they are coated so as to thus constitute a kind of ring inextensible in width (meaning arrows F1, F2);
the hoops 15, the ends 15a of which are folded down around the webs 13 and 14, are kept stretched by the compression of the rubber ring 7.
The, fig. 4 shows an alternative embodiment in which the cores 13 and 14 consist of a rod of oval section as seen at 13a.
It can be seen under these conditions that the wheel thus produced is practically indefinable in the transverse direction (parallel to its axis of rotation). Indeed. a shock or a force applied in the direction of arrow F. is absorbed by the blc.c of caout chouc 7 bearing on the fixed part 3 of the wheel. As during assembly, the rubber was very strongly compressed (by way of example in the envisioned embodiment, this rubber is kept compressed with a total force C of 7000 kg), said rubber will not undergo any deformation, because one can well admit that the power P of the shock will be lower than the force of compression C.
Likewise, if the shock or force P is applied to the wheel in the direction of arrow F4, said wheel will not undergo any transverse deformation.
In this case, the shock will be supported by the crown 8 which is inextensible laterally and whose. resistance Ii is greater than C and therefore greater than P.
On the other hand, in the case of impacts or ef forts in the direction of the arrows F, or FF ;, the wheel is deformable, the. rim can be moved radia.lement relative to the hub, as shown in fi-. ? where we see the deformation undergone by the rubber ring 7.
In order to avoid deterioration of the faces of the rubber ring in contact with the webs 2 and 3, it is advantageous to line these faces with flanges 17 which are secured, for example, by vulcanization with the rubber. This arrangement prevents rapid wear of the rubber ring which would result from possible relative displacements between this ring and the webs 2 and 3.
Nipples or bosses 18 can be distributed on the two faces of the ring 7 and, by their engagement in appropriate housings provided on the sails 2 and 3 @, ensure better transmission of the motor torque or of the braking of the hub to the rim.
Referring to fig. 5 to 7, it can be seen that the elastic ring 7 interposed between the flange 2 and the web 3 - of the wheel can be replaced by a series of elastic elements or blocks 20 arranged concentrically to the rim 1.
These elements 20 are distributed in pairs and between two elements of each pair there is provided, both in the flange 2 and the web 3, an opening or window 21 allowing the free passage of a sleeve 22 (playing the role of the ring 8, but here forming a seam between the flange and the veil).
Each of the sleeves 22 consists of one or more cables 23 of steel or cotton or any other material, wound in a helix and embedded in the rubber coating 24; each of the sleeves thus constitutes a sort of inextensible ring or hoop arranged so as to bear on the brackets or bars 25 applied, one on the flange 2, the other on the web 3 as can be seen in particular in FIG. . 7.
The elements 20 have their bearing faces lined with plates 26 provided with a boss or retaining pin 27 engaged in a corresponding hole provided on the flange 2 and on the web 3.
The ends of the bars 25 are shaped so as to grip the studs 27, which makes any movement of said bars impossible.
The blocks 20 are, as has been said for the ring 7, mounted between the web and the flange after having received a strong compression, they are maintained in this state by the sleeves or hoops 22. The elastic wheel thus carried out therefore allows, as well as the wheel shown in FIG. 1 to 4, a radial displacement of the rim relative to the web 3 (direction of arrow F5), displacement permitted by the possible deformation of the blocks 20, as shown in phantom lines 20a (FIG. 6); also, the wheel thus produced opposes any transverse deformation due to the inextensibility of the hoops 22.
Due to the particular elasticity of the wheels thus produced, it is possible to furnish these wheels with tires at high inflation pressure.
It is obvious that modifications of detail can be made to the embodiments described above without departing from the scope of the present invention.
