Process for establishing constructions in prestressed materials, and device for implementing this process. I'1 is known that the properties of constructions are considerably improved by using reinforcements made of steels with high elastic limit initially subjected to high stresses determining in the construction a system of prestressing opposite to the stresses developed by the application of charges. Tension can be imparted to the reinforcements before or after setting the concrete.
In the latter case, the reinforcements formed by cables or bundles of high strength drawn steel wires are placed in voids made in the concrete. These reinforcements that do not adhere to the concrete are subjected to tension by resting on the concrete once it has hardened.
One difficulty of this known method which has not yet been resolved in a practical manner consists in the connection to be established between the tensioned wires or cables and the concrete.
Steel or concrete anchor bases have already been produced for this purpose, comparable to cable anchors for suspension bridges, external to the construction, the tension of the reinforcements being obtained by jacks acting between these anchoring bases. and the mass of the construction. These devices are expensive and their bulk prevents them from being extended to usual constructions such as bridges or buildings.
The present invention relates to a process for establishing constructions in prestressed materials, in which the prestresses are obtained by means of cables or sets of wires subjected to a preliminary tension, and to a device for the implementation of. this process. It makes it possible to avoid protrusions on the outside of parts made of material to be prestressed.
The method according to the invention is applicable in particular to constructions in prestressed concrete in the case where the tension is conferred on the reinforcements after setting of the concrete, although it can also be used for constructions in a material other than the concrete. concrete, or in the case of concrete, for tensioning before setting.
In what follows, only the application to concrete will be considered for simplicity, it being understood that the other applications also form part of the invention.
The general principle of this process is as follows, for example: In the. construction, in the right where the end of the cable to be stretched is located, a cavity in which this cable passes, the son of this cable is spread out against the. wall of this cavity, these threads are put in tension, then, while they are stretched, the end of these threads placed in said cavity is tightened by means of at least one member forcibly introduced into this cavity and creating on the end of each wire a sufficiently strong compression to generate along said end a friction capable of withstanding the tension.
This compression is preferably pushed up to. a value such as to generate an elastic expansion of the wall of the cavity, which contributes to the tightening of the son.
The compression of the wires of the cable can be carried out against the wall of the cavity by means of wedges or metal pins in dark with the jack or the hammer in the axis of the cable or between the wires of this one or even by means of 'at least one envelope which can be inflated by injection under pressure at. the fluid state, of a hardening material such as a synthetic resin.
According to an example of implementation of this method, the wires of the cable are coated, against the wall of the cavity, while these wires are stretched, with a substance capable of adhering to the wires and of hardening, such as mortar. cement advantageously loaded with silica or alumina sand and asbestos to increase the friction of the wires on the mortar, then an energetic compression of this mortar against the wall of the cavity is carried out by means of a member introduced into the latter . There is an advantage in internally coating the cavity with a metal casing with the interposition of grease between said casing and the cavity in order to reduce the friction.
The cavity having a truncated conical shape and, the compression of the mortar being made by a male cone forced in the axis of the cable, the sliding which tends to occur on the greased surface under the effect of the tension of the wires when the The tensioning device is released to tighten the mortar more and increase the anchoring of the wires.
In an alternative embodiment, in which a frustoconical cavity is still used, a set of wedges is placed between the wires spread out on the wall of the cavity, so that after putting the wires under tension, the wedges are clamped. between these son and finally return to the rest of the tensioning device, the set of son and wedges form a male cone which, by locking in the female cone, maintains the tension of the son.
The member provided with the cavity in which the cable is clamped may be constituted, for example, by a cast steel part, sealed in concrete or other material to be prestressed and comprising one or more bearing surfaces against the concrete to transmit thereto the compression resulting from the tension of the cable.
It can also be made of reinforced concrete; in this case, the cavity where the clamping is done will be hollowed out in the concrete itself whose wall will be. made capable of resisting expansion forces by coating therein a first hoop which may be constituted by a tube or by helical turns of steel wires, preferably of high elastic limit or by a combination of such a tube and of wire turns surrounding it.
The transmission of the forces received by this first hoop to the concrete to be compressed can be ensured by a second transverse reinforcement of the concrete and constituted either by a second hoop formed of a steel rod wound in a helix and arranged Ïr. a certain distance from the first, or by quadrilages perpendicular to the axis of the cable. Concrete anchoring heads can be produced in advance comprising the truncated conical cavity and provided with the desired hoops. The blocks thus formed will be placed in the formwork at the places where one wants to create tensioned reinforcements, then embedded in the concrete.
The device for carrying out the method of the invention is characterized in that it comprises, for the tensioning of the cable and the clamping of the wires against the wall of the cavity, a jack with two concentric pistons, taking support on the construction around the wall of the cavity crossed by the cable, one of the pistons serving to tension the wires of the cable, while the other piston can act along the axis of the cavity for the force sinking of the cable wire clamp.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, embodiments of this positive device.
FIG 1 shows a cross section of the cable and its sheath, according to a first embodiment, the cut being made at a point of the cable located outside the anchor.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of this cable.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the anchoring device and of the tensioning cylinder.
Fig. 4 is a front view of a group of two wires and of an anchoring jaw on the jack.
The fi-. 5 is a partial front view of a crenellated washer perpendicular to the cable and intended to separate its son for their tensioning.
Fig. G is an axial sectional view of another example of implementation of the method which is the subject of the invention.
Figs. 7 to 9 @ are dirty cross sections along lines VII-VII, VIII-VIII and IX-IX of fig. 6.
Fig. 10 shows in section an embodiment of a steel anchor block. Fig. 11 schematically shows the end of a prestressed concrete beam, provided with an anchoring device according to the invention.
Fig. 12 shows a section of a beam.
In the example shown in FIGS. 1 to 5, the cable to be tensioned and to be anchored comprises two layers of wires 8 and 9 (having in all an even number of wires, for example thirty-two) grouped around a core formed by a coil spring 1 not long. It is surrounded by a sheath formed, for example (fig. 1), of two strips 7, 7a stapled by folding 5. This sheath is placed in the casings before the concrete pouring of the structure and is used to insulate the cable from the concrete to allow its elastic elongation at the time of tensioning.
As seen in fig. 3, the end of the cable enters an anchoring tube 6 which has received a flared tapered shape and which is wrapped by a hard steel wire 3 embedded in the concrete 2 poured around the tube 6. A tight fitting 10, in chatterton for example, connects the tube 6 @ to the sheath 7 to prevent the penetration of concrete into this tube and this sheath. At the end of the concrete block 2 there is a thick steel bearing washer 12, intended to receive the thrust of the tensioning cylinder and to transmit it to the concrete.
A crenellated plate 13 shown in part in elevation in FIG. 5 and which is held by bolts 15 sealed in the concrete is associated with a strip washer 14 which holds the wires of the cable in pairs in the slots of the plate 13. A cone 16 made of very hard and very reinforced mortar Longitudi nally is cast between a tube 17 centered on the cable and a conical casing of smooth and polished sheet metal 18 surrounded by a counter-casing 19 of brass or tin.
Inside the tube 6 is disposed a casing 20 which is also conical in tinplate or brass, the common surface 6-20 being greased so as to achieve a coefficient of friction of the order of 5 to 10%. The piston 21 of a jack is supported on the washer 12 and comprises sixteen radial notches 21a allowing the cable wires to pass in pairs. This piston 21 contains an auxiliary piston 22 acting on the cone 16. The cylinder 23 of the udder 21 carries sixteen jaws 24 each receiving two wires of the cable separated by an intermediate wedge 27 (seen in elevation in FIG. 4). between the projections 28 and 29 forming the jaws).
The concrete block? further comprises a series of frets or turns 25 of ordinary mild steel and a system of reinforcements 26 pa ralleles the cable.
The cable with its sheath being in place in the formwork, its end not being seated in the casing 20 lining the interior of the tube 6, at the end the hoops 3 and 25 being in place, the concrete 2 is poured.
Once the concrete has hardened, the wires of the cable are separated into pairs passing between the washers 12 and 14 and in the slots of the. plate 13 which, fixed by bolts 15, holds everything together.
The cone 16 is then introduced with the tube 17, its casing 18 and the counter-casing 19 into the central void of the cable and the gap is filled with fresh plastic mortar, loaded with siliceous sand or asbestos, the interval between the casing 19 and the casing 20. By means of the jack, the piston 21 of which is supported by the washer 12 on the concrete surrounding the tube 6, the steels fixed in groups of two are stretched on the jaws 24 of the cylinder of this jack, which cylinder moves away from the concrete when one admits the. pressure in the cylinder.
Then the son being kept in tension, the piston 22 is actuated which pushes the cone 16, the metal casing 18 then sliding on the casing 19 with moderate metal-to-metal friction. The cone determines an intense com pressure of the mortar between the envelopes 19 and 20, of the order of 400 kg per cm in the example shown.
The mortar loses its excess water and becomes very hard, acquiring a very high friction angle on itself and on the steel; at the same time, it takes a minimum volume.
When the cylinder of the jack is exhausted, the tension of the steels is transferred entirely to the system formed by the cone 16. the envelopes 18 and 19, the mortar interposed between 19 and 20 and the envelope 20. This system stressed by the tension then slides on the greased surface between the tube 6 and the casing 2i), hence very energetic tightening of the mortar on the wires, of the order of 800 to 1000 kg per cm * '. This tightening achieves a perfect bond of the wires to the mortar, the friction angle between the surfaces 6 and 20, increased by the slope of the cone, being smaller than the internal friction angle of the wires on the mor tier.
The elastic swelling of the tube 6 and of the hoop 3 puts the concrete comprised between the hoops 3 and 25 into compression, which transmits the forces of the anerage to the entire mass reinforced by the reinforcements 25, 26. We can then remove the jack 21, 23 and cut what protrudes from the wires out of the construction, then inject under pressure through the central tube 17 a protective material against the. rust such as cement grout, a synthetic resin which can set or any other filling material; it is even possible by this means to establish an aderence between the wires and their sheath. An easily meltable hot material, such as fiberglass or resin, can be injected by preheating the inside of the cables by sending hot air or steam.
The role of the core formed by the coil spring 1 is to maintain the possibility of this injection and the regularity of the cable even in the curves described by the latter.
In the implementation variant shown in FIGS. 6 to 9, each armature, consisting of a bundle of hard steel wires 37 with high tensile strength, is placed in a sheath 31.
Each end of a frame or only one of the ends, if the other is anchored by other means, is engaged in the block which will be described with reference to FIG. 6.
This block comprises, in a mass 32 of high-strength concrete, a revolving orifice having as its generator a straight line ab forming with the axis xx an angle whose tangent is close to 115, said straight line being connected by a curve bc to the generator of the tube 31, parallel to. the x - x axis.
Around the wall of the orifice thus formed is embedded in the concrete 32 a hoop 33 of high elastic limit steel. The block a in the example describes the shape of a body of revolution comprising a head 32a and a frustoconical extension 32b, which is connected to the end of the sheath 31 by a connector 3'1a of fabric or paper impregnated with 'a plastic, like chatterton. Around the head 32a, the concrete is wrapped by a coil 34 which may be of mild steel.
The concrete 35 of the structure or the part to be constructed is poured around the tube and the block, leaving a hole 36 through which the end of the cable passing through the head 32 is accessible from outside the structure. The wires 37 constituting this cable are spread out and folded flat against the wall ab of the truncated cone and steel wedges 38 are placed between these wires provided on their flanks with cylindrical notches Ha. Corresponding to the shape of the wires, so that these wedges inserted between the son are held by them and form with them a kind of male cone which comes to rest against the wall ab of the female cone.
For the tensioning, in the example envisaged, a jack similar to that which has been described with reference to FIG. 3.
The small piston 22 of this jack acts on the end of the wedges 38 through the intermediary of a plate 13a provided with slots for the passage of the wires and the piston 22 carries a recess 47 of diameter corresponding to that of the plate.
The members being arranged as shown in FIG. 6, the pressurization of the pot 23 has the effect of moving this pot away from the piston 21 and of tensioning the threads 37. The wedges follow the movement of the threads at the start until they abut against the plate 13a, they then leave sufficient clearance between them so that the wires, drawn by the pot 23, slide freely. In zone b-c of the anchoring head, the wires press against the concrete of this head and to limit their friction, this zone is coated with a jacket 48 made, for example, by foil.
When the rate of tension, which is known by the pressure in the pot 23, reaches the desired value, the stationary pressure is maintained in this pot and the piston 22 is put under pressure, which tightens the wedges. between the wires thereby expanding the male cone and tightening it against the wall of the female cone.
The two jacks can then be emptied, the wires from the notches 21a of the jack can be removed and the latter removed; anchoring is complete. The taut cable, left to itself, blocks the male cone formed by the wires and the wedges, in the female cone. The wires could in fact slip between the corners only if the friction angle between the corners and the ash wires fell below a value fl such that tg

a being the half-angle at the top of the cone and n the number of threads. However, this angle a is chosen much smaller than the sliding angle, which makes it im possible, and that whatever the state of the surfaces of the wires and of the corners, even if these surfaces were copiously greased.
The pressures between the wedges and the wires are also of such an order that the grease, if any, is driven out completely.
For the anchoring to resist, it is therefore sufficient that the wall of the female cone supports the force of the cable and that it can transmit it to the concrete.
This is where the hard steel hoop 33 intervenes which receives the forces forming an angle with the axis of the cone which is the sum of the angle at the apex of the cone and the angle of friction between steel and concrete.
Under the action of the taut cable, a balance is finally established between the deformations of the hoops 33 and 34 of the concrete 32 and of the underlying concrete 35, an equilibrium comprising a large relative deformation of the hoop 33-, a much lower relative deformation of the hoop 34 and a triple hugging with plastic deformation of the concrete 32 and production of isostatic lines such as UTr, XY.
In the area where the head is supported on the concrete 35 of the structure, this concrete. can be usefully hooped by grids.
It should be noted that nothing is opposed to putting the cylinder back in place a second time; the wires can be pulled again with the jack; release the corners, increase the initial tension (or even reduce it). We can therefore carry out the tensioning gradually, correct them in the event of an error, ete. Once the tensioning is finished, the hole 36 can be plugged with concrete and the ends of the protruding wires can be embedded in concrete which fills a slight notch made on the side of the hole 36.
Fig. 10 shows in section a cast steel anchor block 32a provided with the female cone 32b and whose surface 32c, 32d is used to support the concrete for the transmission of the forces generated by the tensioned cable. This anchor block is used in the manner described for the concrete block.
Fig. It shows the end of a beam provided with reinforcements d housed in sheaths, stretched and anchored as it has just been described. The anchor heads e are placed at the ends of the reinforcements in the housings provided during the pouring of the concrete.
The blocks can also be square or rectangular in cross section, and include anchoring devices for several cables. In this case, the hoops 34 can be replaced by normal grids to the cable. It can be seen that in the process and the devices described, the jack which tends the wires is supported on the concrete which constitutes the definitive anchoring, so that the provisional tension (during the setting in tension) and the final tension act along the same axis and on the same material, which allows the entire concrete surface to be compressed up to the maximum compatible with its resistance.
The method is not limited to the case where the tensioning is carried out after hardening of the concrete. The concrete covering the tensioned reinforcements may not be poured until after these reinforcements have been put under tension, on condition that supports are available for the anchoring heads while this tensioning takes place; these ap then can be taken on the formwork or on a part of the concrete of the part, which does not dress the reinforcements, which is poured in advance and which has already hardened before the tensioning.
For example, in the case of a beam having a section in I as shown in fig. 1 ?, one can, after placing the reinforcements d and the anchor blocks, first pour the concrete of the hatched part, which only coats the reinforcements at the ends of the beam (fig. 11). . When this concrete has hardened, we will put in tension the reinforcements whose anchor blocks will rest on it. Once the tension and 1 anerage are completed, the rest of the concrete will be poured around the tension reinforcements.
The method and the devices described also give a practical means of achieving, by tensioned reinforcements, the joining of separate concrete pieces arranged, for example, end to end. The tensioning of the reinforcements which will be placed, for example, in holes made in these parts will ensure. compressing them against each other.
Thus, in the case where the reinforcements are stretched after setting and hardening of the concrete, the sheath insulating the reinforcements from the concrete can be reduced to a simple coating of a fatty substance or of a fusible plastic material based on bitumen, pitch or rubber, applied to the yarns and protected, if necessary, by wrapping of paper or other fibers. This fusible plastic material can be softened at the time of tensioning, for example by sending an electric current through the armatures.
