<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 6>
<Desc/Clms Page number 7>

<Desc/Clms Page number 10>
<Desc/Clms Page number 11>
<Desc/Clms Page number 12>
<Desc/Clms Page number 13>

Method and device for anchoring tensioned cables intended for the construction of concrete or other prestressed materials.
It is known that lion greatly improves the properties of constructions by using reinforcements in steels with high elastic limit initially subjected to strong tensions determining in the construction a system of reverse prestressing of the stresses developed by the application of the loads, The tension can be conferred on reinforcements before or after setting concrete. In the latter case, the reinforcements formed by cables or bundles of drawn high-strength steel wires are placed in voids made in the concrete. These reinforcements not adhering to the concrete are subjected to a tension by resting on the concrete once hardened.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
One difficulty with this known process, which has not yet been resolved in a practical way, consists in the connection to be established between the tensioned wires or cables and the concrete.
For this purpose, steel or concrete anchor caps have already been produced, comparable to cable anchors for suspension bridges, outside the construction, the tension of the reinforcements being obtained by jacks acting between these danorage bases and the mass of the construction. These devices are expensive and their bulk prevents their extension to usual constructions such as bridges or buildings,
The present invention relates to a method for producing anchors which, among other advantages, make it possible to avoid protrusions on the outside of parts made of concrete or other material to be prestressed.
This process is particularly applicable to constructions in prestressed concrete in the case where the tension is imparted to the reinforcements after the concrete has set, although it can also be used for constructions in a material other than concrete, or in the case of concrete, for tensioning before setting.
In the following, only the application to concrete will be considered for simplicity, it being understood that the other applications also form part of the scope of the invention.
The general principle of this process is as follows, in the construction where the end of the cable to be stretched is located, a resistant member which will be embedded in the concrete or other material to be prestressed and which is provided with 'a cavity through which the cable passes, the wires of this cable are spread against the wall of this cavity, these ends of the wires are put in tension, then, while they are stretched, these / are tightened by resting on the wall thereof, son flattened in the bay by means of sufficient compression along said strong end to generate friction capable of withstanding the tension.
This compression is preferably pushed up to a value such that it generates an elastic expansion.

According to one embodiment of this process, the wires of the cable are coated against the wall of the cavity, while these wires are stretched, with a substance capable of adhering to the wires and of hardening, such as mortar. cement, advantageously loaded with siliceous or aluminous sand and asbestos to increase the friction of the wires on the mortar, then an energetic compression of this mortar against the wall of the cavity is carried out by means of a member introduced into the mortar. -this. It is advantageous to coat the cavity internally with a metal casing with the interposition of grease between said casing and the cavity in order to reduce friction.
The cavity having a truncated form and the compression of the mortar being made by a male cone forced into the axis of the cable, the slippage which tends to occur on the greased surface under the effect of the tension of the wires, when the device of tension is released, has the effect of further tightening the mortar and increasing the anchoring of the wires.
In an alternative embodiment in which a frustoconical cavity is still used, a set of wedges is placed between the wires spread out on the wall of the cavity, so that after putting the wires under tension, the wedges are tightened between these wires and finally, return to rest at the tensioning device, all the wires and the wedges form a male cone which, by locking in the female cone, maintains the tension of the wires.

<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
The member provided with the cavity in which the cable is clamped can be constituted, for example, by a cast steel part, sealed in the concrete or other material to be prestressed and comprising one or more bearing surfaces against the concrete for transmit to it the compression resulting from the tension of the cable.
It can also be made of reinforced concrete; in this case, the cavity where. the clamping is done will be hollowed out in the concrete itself, the wall of which will be made capable of resisting expansion forces by coating a first hoop therein which can be constituted by a tube or by helical turns of steel wires , preferably with a high elastic limit, or by a combination of such a tube and turns of son surrounding it.
The transmission of the forces received by this first hoop to the concrete to be compressed can be ensured by a second transverse reinforcement of the concrete and constituted either by a second hoop formed of a steel rod wound in a helix and arranged at a certain distance from the first, or by grids perpendicular to the axis of the cable.
Concrete anchoring heads can be produced in advance comprising the frustoconical cavity and provided with the desired hoops. The blocks thus formed will be placed in the formwork where. we will want to add reinforcements stretched then embedded in concrete.
The invention also extends to devices for carrying out the method.
The appended drawing, given by way of non-limiting example, represents embodiments of these devices.

FIG. 10 shows in section an embodiment of a steel anchor block.
FIG. 11 schematically shows the end of a prestressed concrete beam, provided with an anchoring device according to the invention.
Figure 12 shows a section of a beam.
In the embodiment shown in Figures 1 to 5, the cable to be tensioned and anchored comprises two layers of wires 8 and 9 (having in all an even number of wires, for example thirty two) grouped around a core formed by a long-pitch coil spring 1. It is surrounded by a sheath formed for example (fig.1) of two strips 7, 7a stapled by folding 5. This sheath is placed in the formwork before the concrete pouring of the structure and serves to insulate the concrete cable to allow its elastic elongation at the time of tensioning.
As can be seen in figure 3 the end of the cable enters an anchor tube 6 which has received a flared tapered shape and which is wrapped by a hard steel wire 3 embedded in the concrete 2 poured around the tube 6. A tight fitting 10, in chatterton for example, connects the tube 6 to the duct 7

to prevent the penetration of concrete into this tube and sheath. At the end of the concrete block 2 is a thick steel support washer 12, intended to receive the thrust of the tensioning jack and to transmit it to the concrete,
A crenellated plate 13 shown / partly in elevation in Fig. 5 and which is held by bolts 15 sealed in the concrete is associated with a strip washer 14 which holds the cable wires in pairs in the crenals of the plate 13. A cone 16 of very hard mortar and highly reinforced longitudinally is cast between a tube 17 oriented on the cable and a conical casing of smooth sheet metal 18 surrounded by a back casing 19 of brass or tinplate. Inside the tube 6 is disposed a casing 20, also conical made of tinplate or brass, the common surface 6-20 being greased so as to achieve a coefficient of friction of the order of 5 to 10%. The piston 21 of a jack is supported on the washer 12 and comprises sixteen radial notches 21a allowing the cable wires to pass in pairs.
This piston 21 contains an auxiliary piston 22 acting on the cone 16. The cylinder 23 of the piston 21 carries sixteen jaws 24 each receiving two wires of the cable separated by an intermediate wedge 27 (seen in elevation in FIG. 4 between the projections 28 and 29 forming the jaws).
The concrete block 2 further comprises a series of frets or turns 25 of ordinary mild steel and a system of reinforcements 26 parallel to the cable,
The cable with its sheath being in place in the formwork, its end having passed through the casing 20 lining the inside of the tube 6, finally the hoops 3 and 25 being in place, the concrete 2 is poured.
Once the concrete has hardened, the wires of the cable are separated into pairs passing between the washers 12 and 14 and in the slots of the plate 13 which, fixed by the bolts 15, maintains the whole.

The cone 16 with its tube 17, its casing 18 and the counter-casing 19 is then introduced into the central void of the cable and filled with fresh plastic mortar, loaded with siliceous sand or asbestos, the interval between l 'casing 19 and casing 20. By means of the jack, the piston 21 of which is supported by the washer 12 on the concrete surrounding the tube 6, the steels fixed in groups of 2 are stretched on the jaws 24 of the cylinder of this jack, which cylinder deviates from the concrete when the pressure is admitted in the cylinder.
Then, the wires being kept in tension, the piston 22 is actuated which pushes the cone 16, the metal casing 18 then sliding on the casing 19 with moderate metal-to-metal friction. The cone determines an intense compression of the mortar between the envelopes 19 and 20, of the order of 400 kg per cm 2 in the example shown.
The mortar loses its excess water and becomes very hard by acquiring a very high friction angle on itself and on the steel; at the same time it takes a minimum volume.
When the cylinder of the jack is exhausted, the tension of the steels is transferred entirely to the system formed by the cone 16, the envelopes 18 and 19, the mortar interposed between 19 and 20 and the envelope 20. The system stressed by the tension then slides over the greased surface between the tube 6 and the casing 20, resulting in very energetic clamping of the mortar on the wires, of the order of 800 to 1000 kg per cm 2. This tightening achieves a perfect bond of the wires to the mortar, the friction angle between the surfaces 6 and 20, increased by the slope of the cone, being lower than the internal friction of the wires on the mortar.
The elastic swelling of the tube 6 and of the hoop 3 puts the concrete between the hoops 3 and 25 under compression, which transmits the forces of the anchoring to the entire A

elastic. The block has, in the example described the shape of a body of revolution comprising a head 32a and a frustoconical extension 32b, which is connected to the end of the winch 31 by a connector 31a of fabric or paper impregnated with a plastic material, like chatterton. around the head 32a, the concrete is wrapped by a coil 34 which may be of mild steel.
The concrete 35 of the structure or the part to be constructed is poured around the tube 31 and the block, leaving a hole 36 through which the end of the cable passing through the head 32 is accessible from outside the structure. The wires 37 constituting this cable are laid out and folded against the wall ab of the truncated cone and steel wedges 38 are placed between these wires, provided on their sides with cylindrical notches 32a corresponding to the shape of the wires, so that these wedges inserted between the son are held by them and form with them a kind of male cone which comes to rest against the wall ab of the female cone.
For the tensioning, one uses in the exeraple envisaged a jack similar to that which was described with regard to fig.3.
The small piston 22 of this jack acts on the end of the wedges 38 by means of a plate 13a provided with slots for the passage of the wires and the piston 22 has a recess 47 of diameter corresponding to that of the plate.
The members being arranged as shown in FIG.
6, the pressurization of the pot 23 has the effect of moving this pot away from the piston 21 and of tensioning the threads 37. The wedges follow the movement of the threads, at the beginning until they abut against the plate 13a , they then leave sufficient play between them so that the wires, drawn by the pot 23, slide freely. In the area b-c of the anchor head, the wires
<Desc / Clms Page number 10>
press against the concrete of this head and to limit their friction, this zone is covered with a jacket 48 made for example by foil ;.
When the rate of tension, which we know by the pressure in the pot 23, reaches the desired value, the pressure is kept stationary in this pot and the piston 22 is put under pressure which comes to tighten the corners between the wires thus expanding the male cone and tightening it against the wall of the female cone.
It is then possible to drain the two jacks, remove the wires from the notches 21a of the jack and remove the latter; anchoring is complete. The taut cable, left to itself, blocks the male cone, formed by the wires and the wedges, in the female cane. The wires could in fact slip between the corners only if the angle of friction between the corners and the wires fell below a value ss such that ÒtgÓ tgss = ÒtgÓ / n; Ó being the 1/2 angle at the top of the cone and n the number of threads. Now, this angle Ó is chosen to be much smaller than the sliding angle, which makes it impossible, regardless of the state of the surfaces of the wires and of the wedges, even if these surfaces were copiously greased.
The pressures between wedges and wires are moreover of such an order that the grease, if any, is completely driven out.
For the anchoring to resist, it is therefore sufficient that the wall of the female cone supports the force of the cable and that it can transmit it to the concrete.
This is where the hard steel hoop 33 intervenes which receives the forces forming with the axis of the cone an angle which is the sum of the angle at the apex of the cone and of the angle of friction between steel and concrete.
Under the action of the stretched cable, it is established, at @

definitive, a balance between the deformations of the hoops 33 and 34 of the concrete 32 and of the underlying concrete 35, equilibrium comprising a large relative deformation of the hoop 33, a much lower relative deformation of the hoop 34 and a triple hugging with plastic deformation of the concrete 32 and production of isostatic lines such as IV, XY.
In the area where the head is supported on the concrete 35 of the structure, this concrete can be usefully hooped by grids.
It should be noted that there is nothing to prevent the jack in place from being crisscrossed a second time; the wires can be pulled again with the jack; release the wedges, increase the initial tension (or even reduce it). We can therefore carry out the tensioning gradually, correct them in case of error, etc ...
Once the tensioning is complete, hole 36 can be plugged with concrete and the ends of the wires ¯, which protrude, in concrete which fills a slight notch made on the side of hole 36.
Fig. 10 shows in section an anchoring block 32a of cast steel provided with the female cone 32b and whose surface 32c, 32d serves to support the concrete for the transmission of the forces generated by the tensioned cable. This anchor block is used in the manner described for the concrete block.
FIG. 11 shows the end of a beam provided with reinforcements d housed in sheaths, tensioned and anchored as it has just been described. The anchoring heads e are placed at the ends of the reinforcements in the housings provided during the pouring of the concrete.
The blocks can also be of square or rectangular section, and b include anchoring devices for
<Desc / Clms Page number 12>
multiple cables. In this case, the hoops 34 can be replaced by normal grids to the cable.
It can be seen that in the method and the devices described, the jack which stretches the wires is supported on the concrete which constitutes the definitive anchoring, so that the provisional tension (during the tensioning) and the definitive tension act according to the same axis and on the same material, which makes it possible to compress the entire surface of the concrete to the maximum compatible with its strength.
The invention is not limited to the case where the tensioning is carried out after hardening of the concrete. The concrete covering the tensioned reinforcements may not be poured until after these reinforcements have been put under tension, on condition that supports are available for the anchoring heads while this setting is followed. These supports can be taken from the cof - frages or on part of the concrete of the part, which does not coat the reinforcements, which is poured in advance and which has already hardened before the tensioning.
For example, in the case of a beam having an I-section as shown in fig. 12, it is possible, after placing the reinforcements d and the anchoring blocks in place, first to pour the concrete of the hatched part , which only surrounds the reinforcements at the ends of the beam (fig. 11). When this concrete has hardened, we will put in tension the reinforcements whose anchor blocks will rest on it. Once the tension and anchoring are complete, the rest of the concrete will be poured around the tensioned reinforcements.
The method and the devices according to the invention also provide a practical means of achieving, by tensioned reinforcements, the joining of distinct concrete pieces, arranged for example end to end. The setting in tension of the reinforcements which one will place for example in
<Desc / Clms Page number 13>
holes formed in these parts will ensure their compression against each other.
It goes without saying that the embodiments which have just been described have been given only by way of example and that they could be modified without thereby departing from the scope of the invention.
So in the event that. the reinforcements are stretched after setting and hardening of the concrete the sheath insulating the reinforcements from the concrete can be reduced to a simple coating of a fatty material or a fusible plastic material, based on bitumen, pitch or rubber, applied to the wires and protest if necessary by wrapping of paper or other fibers. This fusible plastic material can be softened at the time of tensioning, for example by sending an electric current through the armatures.
