Epicyclic gear shifting device. The invention relates to an epicycloidal gear change device, that is to say a device which makes it possible to obtain a variable ratio, not only between the speeds of the motor member and of the motor. 'receiving member, but also between the torque of the motor member and the receiving member.
The object of the invention is intended in the first place to be applied to speed changes for cycle hubs, and in this case the gear is housed in a housing which constitutes part of the last trailing member. However, the invention is also applicable to gear changes serving other purposes, including those in which the gear is enclosed in a fixed box, and in which the central axis is fixed, such as in a hub. cycle, or mobile.
The object of the invention is a speed change device of the type defined above and comprising an epicyclic gear train acting in conjunction with reciprocating rock and pawl drive mechanisms of the final driven member, and means for coupling the driving member to the crown of the gear train so as to drive the member driven either directly by the crown and one of the ratchet and pawl mechanisms, or indirectly by the crown, the planet carrier and the other ratchet and pawl mechanism. Examples of gear changes having these features are described in Patent No. 221146.
In the devices known until now, the maximum number of speeds that can be obtained with a single epicyclic gear train was three, and the aim of the invention is to provide a device making it possible to obtain one, two or more additional speeds without substantial modifications being necessary in the construction of the elements employed heretofore. The device according to the invention is characterized in that the epicyclic gear train comprises central gears operating alternately and complementary planet gears, and in that means are provided for activating one of the central gears in the train. , while the others are inactive.
Preferably, the planet gears are engaged with a common ring gear which may have teeth of the same diameter and be engaged with only one of the elements of the composed planet gears or which may be engaged with independent planet gears mounted on axles. separated; the common crown can also have two or more toothings of different diameters, each of which can cooperate with its own series of planet gears, the arrangement employed depending on the necessary gear ratios.
With the aid of such a speed changing device, comprising reciprocating ratchet and pawl drive mechanisms capable of operating so that one is overtaken when the other is active, and the other or disengaged when the first is active, three speeds can be obtained by moving a control member progressively through three positions which in turn represent a reduced speed, direct engagement and increased speed. In some embodiments of the invention, the selection of the alternating central gears to produce a fourth gear (also decreased)
can be obtained by a subsequent movement of the control member in the same direction, but such that the fourth selection becomes cumulative with the third, and is not obtained instead of the latter. A limitation of this form of the invention is that it is not possible to achieve both things, increase and decrease, by employing the additional center gear.
However, according to other embodiments, it is possible to provide additional control means making it possible to select the reciprocating central gears independently of the movement of the first selector, that is to say without taking into account. due to the fact that the epicyclic system is arranged for an increase, the described grip or the decrease. Such a double control makes it possible to obtain the increase and the decrease by each of the central gears, so that the total number of speeds which can be obtained with the aid of the device is always one more (representing direct drive) than twice the number of central gears.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, several embodiments of the object of the invention, adapted to the hub of a pedal cycle.
Fig. 1 is an axial section of a four-speed hub.
Figs. 2 and 3 are dirty cross sections according to lines 2-2, resp. 3-3 of fig. 1, at, smaller scale.
Fig. 4 is a partial axial section of a five-speed embodiment.
Fig. 5 is a partial axial section showing an embodiment with seven speeds.
The device shown in FIGS. 1 to 3 comprises a fixed central axis 1, the two ends of which carry cones 2 which support, by means of ball bearings 3, respectively the claw drive member 4 which carries the chain sprocket: 5, and the bottom 6 integral with one end of the casing 7 of the hub, the other end being mounted on the bottom 8 which, in turn, is. rotatably mounted, by means of a ball bearing 9, on the drive member 4. The bases 6 and 8 are provided in their interior with ratchet teeth 10, respectively 11.
A planet carrier 12 surrounds the central axis 1 and carries, on the axes 14, three compound planet gears 13; the outer end of the planet carrier is intended to receive pawls at 15 which cooperate with the ratchet teeth 10 of the bottom 6. The small-diameter toothing of the pinion 13 is engaged with the internal toothed ring gear 16, which bears pawls at 17 cooperating with the ratchet teeth 11 of the bottom 8.
The inner end of the planet carrier 12 carries side claws 18, and the crown 16 has two series of inner teeth 19 and 20, located in different transverse planes. In the longitudi nal bore of the axis 1 can slide the control rod 21, which carries a key 21a moving in a transverse slot and in turn carrying a claw coupling part 2 &, which can come into engagement with the claws 18 of the planet carrier or with the teeth 19 of the crown 16 or with the teeth 20 of the crown, this control with three different elements giving three speeds as in the known devices, for example, in the patent no.121146.
On axis 1 are mounted idly and so as to slide two central pinions 24 and 25, constantly engaged, respectively with the teeth of larger diameter and the teeth of smaller diameter of the planet gears 13. The central pinion 24 can come engaged with internal claws 26 of a fixed ring 27, to be kept stationary by the latter, while the central pinion 25 carries side claws 28 which can engage with fixed claws 29 of the axis to be held motionless. These two central pinions, although they can rotate independently of one another, are intended to move axially together, by means of a key 30 disposed in a transverse slot of the axis and carried by the rod. control 21, and a spring 31 surrounding the axis.
The central pinion 24 is mounted on a bush provided with a collar which acts as a support for the axial movement. The control rod 21 has a diameter reduced to the right which passes through the key 3.0, so as not to strike the latter before the stop 21b makes contact with the key.
When the device is in the position shown in fig. 1, the pinion 24 is im movable and, therefore, serves as a support for the reaction of the epicyclic gear, the central pinion 25 rotating idle on the fixed axis 1.
By axially moving the control rod 21 in the known manner, three speeds can be obtained, as in the constructions already known; the lower speed is obtained when the sliding part 23 is in engagement with the teeth 20 and keeps the pawls 17 out of action; then the stop 21b has arrived at the key 30 and the part 23 has stopped, either by the entire compression of the spring 22, or by the contact of the key 21a against the end of its groove.
If now the rod 21 is pulled further to the right (fig. 1), against the small but strong spring 21c, the central pinions 24 and 25 move axially, so as to disengage the pinion first. 24 and then blocking the pinion 25, which gives, thanks to the different diameters of the two pinions, another lower speed, and makes the device a four-speed mechanism. During the opposite movement of the control rod 21, since the spring 21c is stronger than the spring 22, the sliding part 23 is kept in its extreme right position (fig. 1), until the central gears arrived in their extreme left position.
In the embodiment of FIG. 4, the central gears 24 and 25 are not influenced by the control rod 21, but they have an independent control 3.2. In this example, the pinion 25 is normally stationary, by the engagement of the claws 28 and 29, but it can be disengaged by the actuation of the command $ 12, a subsequent movement of this command against of the spring 32a will cause the pinion 24 to lock on the axle by meshing with the claws 26.
Therefore, the coupling piece 23 can slide into any of its three alternate positions to cause a higher speed, direct engagement and a lower speed, regardless of which pinion 24 or 25 is in action. In all, therefore, five different speeds are obtained with this embodiment. By the way, there are six gears, but since two of them are direct drives, you get five different gear ratios. Referring to fig. 5, there may be more than two center gears, and in this example there are three, arranged side by side in engagement with the planet gears.
These three central gears do not move axially, but they are selected by a key 33 sliding in the axis which can engender either with claws 34 on the. side face of one of the central gears, either with inner claws 35 in a bushing carrying the middle central gear or with inner claws 36 in the other outer central gear, to lock the respective gear on the axle fixed. Any other suitable form of selector could be used.
By means of three central gears, one can obtain seven different speeds, that is to say the direct drive, three increased speeds and three decreased speeds.
Although in the last two examples shown, the independent controls are actuated from the opposite ends of the axis, this arrangement is not mandatory. The two controls could be arranged on the same side of the axis, either one inside the other, or one next to the other, and they could be actuated by separate wires or similar members or, by through a lost movement mechanism, by a single organ, son or the like.
