Gear change device with epicycloidal gears. The object of the present invention is a gear changing device with epicyclic gears of the kind comprising two epicyclic gear trains, each of which consists of a central wheel, a planet carrier and a toothed crown, and means for coupling the elements of these two trains together and to driving, driven and fixed members.
In known gears of this type there were only three speeds, and although relatively close in ratio, the estimated percentage increase, from the direct drive speed, between the medium and high ratios. , is greater than the percentage decrease between the mid and low ratios, or in other words, the "decrease" is less than the "increase".
The device according to the invention is charac terized in that the coupling means comprise means for coupling the planet carrier and the ring gear of one of the trains respectively to the driving and driven members or to the driven and driving members, and d 'other means for coupling the central wheel, the planet carrier and the crown of the second gear train respectively to the fixed member, to.
the central wheel of the first gear train and the driven member, so that the central wheel of the first gear train rotates at a constant speed and in the same direction with respect to the driven member, so that, for an increased differential ratio and a decreased differential ratio from the direct drive, the value of the increase in the gear ratio is smaller than the value of the decrease in the gear ratio.
Preferably, means will be provided for coupling the driving, driven and fixed members to the elements of one of the epicyclic gear trains so as to obtain one or two direct drive gear ratios.
It is possible to provide a selector mechanism such that, when it is in the position to actuate only one of the epicyclic gear trains, for a normal or direct gear ratio, the planet carrier of the planet gear. another train is released.
In a preferred embodiment, the ring gear of the second train is permanently coupled to the driven member, and means are provided, a) for alternately coupling the planet carrier or the ring gear of the first train to the 'driven member, b) for alternately coupling the cen tral wheel of one or the other train to the axle to keep it fixed, and c) for coupling an or gane leading alternately either to the planet carrier or to. the toothed crown of the first train.
In the case of a gear at. four speeds, it is possible to achieve the selection by a single actuator, but in the case of a five-speed gear, a preferred embodiment has two separate actuators, one being tiné the movement of the selector, and the other serving to keep alternately one or the other of the central wheels on the axle. In such an arrangement, one lever will cause the high, normal and low gear, while a second lever will be used to get the high or low gears closer or further to the normal gear.
Other combinations of the coupling mechanisms can be provided as alternatives to some of the combinations described above, i.e. giving the same gear ratios, but with different couplings.
The appended drawings represent, by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.

Fig. 5 is a cross section taken along line 5-5 of the. fi-. 1 showing the ratchet drag between the crown of the gear train B and the body of the hub.
The fi--. 6 is a perspective view of the pawl showing the side bevel at one of its ends, the purpose of which will be described later.
The fi-. 7 is a longitudinal section showing a variant of the device for controlling the selector inside the shaft.
Fig. 8 is an axial section of a second embodiment of a bicycle hub, comprising an epicyclic gearshift.
The device shown in FIGS. 1. to 6 is constructed as a four-speed bicycle hub giving three close, high-speed ratios which are suitable for racing purposes, and a lower fourth gear ratio, while fig. 7 shows a way to achieve a higher fifth gear. This gear shifting can of course have a lot of other jobs, but it is especially built for the job mentioned above.
As shown in fig. 1, the epicyclic gear train B comprises the toothed crown 11. extended at one of its ends to be able to carry drag pawls 12 and provided in its internal bore with two series of teeth or cleats 13 @ and 14 arranged in separate planes for alternative selection (see also fig. 4 and 5 ) .
Teeth 13 and 14 are parallel and con centric to. the axis of the ring gear, but the two series of teeth are angularly displaced with respect to each other, so that the teeth 14 are disposed between the teeth 13 when viewed from the end. Double planet gears 15, carried by axes 16, are engaged with the toothed ring 11, the axes 1.6 passing through bearings in a planet gear cage 17, to form drive claws 18, arranged nearby, but in a separate plan of the aforementioned series of teeth 13 and 14. The planet cage 17 carries drag pawls 20.
A toothed crown 19 of the gear train A is formed in the bottom 26 of the casing of the hub and is engaged with planet gears 21 carried by axles 21a which are mounted in a cage at. satellites 22. This cage 22 is integral with a pinion 23 in engagement with the planet gnons 15 to thus complete the epicyclic gear train B (FIG. 3).
An axis 24 is arranged concentrically with the aforementioned elements and rotatably carries a pinion 25 in engagement with the planet pinions 21 to thereby form the solitary central pinion and complete the epicyclic gear train A (fig. 2). The central pinion 25 carries claws 50 on one of its faces. The axis 24 is provided with splines 52 on which is mounted a toothed part 51 which can engage with the claws 50 to block the pinion 25 on the axis or to release it at will.
In addition, the planet cage 22 has in its bore a series of claws 53 which can also engage with the sliding toothed part 51 to block the cage 22 and the pinion 23 on the axis or to release them at will. A key 61 passing through. through a slot in the axis 24 is disposed at the rear of the sliding part 51 and can abut against a bearing surface 54e to produce the displacement of the sliding part 51 as will be described later.
Cooperating with a key 35, a rod 36 and a chain 37 (which will be described later), a rod 54, screwed into the rod 36, presents the three stops 54a, 54b and 54c. The end stop 54a rests on. the inside of the rod 36 when the rod 54 is fully screwed in, and a collar 55 bears against the stop 54b. Between the collar 55 and the key 35 is disposed a spring 56, this spring being stronger in a partially compressed position than a spring 38 in the fully compressed position. The end of the rod 36 determines the position of the key 35 relative to the stops 54b and 54c.
Another res-. Sort 57 acts against a collar 58 which rests against a bearing surface of the axle 24 and the hand normally holds the sliding part 51 in engagement with the claws 50 of the central wheel 25 so as to block this wheel on the axle. The cage at. planet gear 22 is rotatably mounted in both ends of planet gear cage 17 and also on pinion 25, so as to make the assembly concentric to itself and to axis 24 and to provide good bearing surfaces. The part 26 also supports the cage 17 since it adapts to the outside diameter of the pawls 20.
The ring gear 11 is centered by extensions 18 of the axes 16 of the tellite sa pinions, engaged in its bore. The drive is transmitted from the left end of the gear by the drive pawls 20 at the bottom 26 which carries ratchet teeth 27 working in the direction of advance. This bottom 26 is mounted by means of a ball bearing on a cone 28 which is screwed onto the shaft. The drive is transmitted from the other end of the gear by pawls 12 to the right bottom 29 which carries ratchet teeth 30 also working in the direction of advance (see also fig. 5).
A leading or gane 31 is mounted by a ball bearing in the bottom 2-9 and is further supported by a ball bearing placed on a cone 32 which is screwed on the axis 24. The inner part of the organ drive 31 passing through the bottom 29 is rotatably mounted in the ring gear 11. to keep it concentric with the axis of the assembly.
Between the two bottoms 26 and 29 and fixed to these parts, is arranged the casing 33- which serves the various functions of spacing the support parts 26 and 29, to form a housing for the entire mechanism and fixing flanges 33a to construct a bicycle wheel by means of spokes in the usual way.
On the axis 24 is mounted in a sliding manner a ring 34 which can be actuated by the key 35, the rod 36 and the chain 37 in a known manner. The spring. 38 acts between the ring 34 and the cone 32 and serves to move the ring 34 to the left, while the displacement in the other direction is obtained by a traction applied to the chain 37. Between the ends of the spring 38 and the cone 32 is disposed a sleeve 59, while between the other end of the spring 38 and the ring 34 is disposed a cap 60.
A sliding part with claws 40 is rotatably mounted on the ring 34 and is held axially by a collar 39 integral with the ring and by the key 35, this smooth neck part 40 being engaged with the dragging member 31. to rotate with the latter, while it is free to be moved axially by the ring 34 and the key 35.
A chain sprocket 41 is mounted, in the application of the mechanism to a bicycle wheel, on the drive member 31, this mounting being effected by claws in the example described, so that the force can be transmitted to the drive member 31 by means of a chain of the usual chain wheel not shown.
In the normal position, the combined effect of the springs is therefore to engage the sliding part 51 with the pinion 25 to lock it on the shaft, and the sliding part 40 with the driving claws 18 to couple the shaft. 'drive member 31 to the planet carrier 17. Coupling to. claws 40 can be moved to the right by exerting a traction on the chain 37 so that it can engage with the teeth 13, this displacement being possible since the spring 56 is stronger than the spring 38, while a lost movement takes place between the rod 54 and the key 67. A new pull on the chain 37 will first produce the engagement of the part 40 with the teeth 14.
At this point, the cap 60 of the ring 34 will come. in. contact with the sleeve 59 which rests against the cone 32 and prevents further movement to the right of the part 40. At this point, the stop 54e of the rod 54 also rests against the key 61, so that 'a new 1-raet: one on channel 37 will produce. the wedge of the spring 56 and the displacement of the key 61 to the right while driving; with it the sliding part 51.
Exhibit 51 st will therefore move. out of engagement with the claws 50 of the pinion 25 and will engage with the claws 53 of the carrier 22 combined with the central pinion 23, while the claw piece 40 remains in engagement with the teeth 14 of the crown 11, so as to give gear ratios as described below. When chain 37 is released, the wire key first returns to its position shown in fig. 1, ta.n- d'.s that a lost movement takes place between the 1 54 and the ring 34.
The epicyclic gear train is such that. if a rotational force is applied to the drive claws 18 of the planet carrier 17. the ring gear 11 will be turned in the same direction at an increased speed, this speed being determined by the number of teeth of the ring gear 11 and of the central pinion 23, and also by the fact that this central pinion 23 rotates in the same cens by the action of the toothed ring 19 (which, in this gear, is integral with the ring 11 and rotates at the.
same speed as this thanks to the pawl 12 supporting the part 29, the casing 33 and the part 26) acting on the planet gears 22) by means of the planet gears 21 which are in engagement with the crown 19 and the pinion central 25, the latter being fixed to the axis 24 which is held in a non-rotating manner in the frame of the bicycle. Since the support piece 26 rotates faster than the planet carrier 17. the ratchet teeth 27 exceed the pawls 211 and there is no connection between the crown 19 and the planet carrier 17. This arrangement of selectors give close-ratio overtraining for high speed.
For direct grip. the. claw piece 40 is moved to engage with teeth 13 on the. crown 11. The force is transmitted from the member 31 through the intermediary (this part 40 and the teeth 13 to the crown 11. Since it has been shown that the crown 11 always turns faster than the planet carrier 17, this driving force will be transmitted by the pawls 12, carried by there crown 11, to part 29 and thus to the casing of the hub. In the meantime, the gears run empty. and the other part 26 will protrude from the pawls 20 cooperating with it.
If, however, the rotational force is applied to the ring gear 11 by the teeth 14, and the pawls 12 being released from the rocker teeth 30, as will be described later, the planet carrier 17 will be driven into the gearbox. same direction at a reduced speed, this speed being determined by the number of teeth of the crown 11 and of the central pinion 23 and also by the fact that this central pinion rotates in the same direction by the action of the crown 19 (which, in this gear, is integral with the planet carrier 17 and rotates at the same speed as the latter thanks to the pawls 20 and the ratchet teeth 27)
acting on the planet gear cage 22 by means of its tellite pinions 21 which are engaged with the crown wheel 19 and the central pinion 25, the latter being blocked on the axis 24 as described above. This arrangement of the selectors gives a low speed to close ratio.
If, in this last position of the gears, the central pinion 25 is released from the axis, and if the planet carrier and the central pinion 22 are fixed to the axis by a displacement of the sliding part 51 as described below - above, the planet carrier 17 and the trailing member rotate in the same direction at a reduced speed, this speed being determined by the number of teeth of the crown 11, of the central pinion 23 and of the planet pinions 15 only, the gear train A now being disabled and the central pinion 25 spinning idle on the axis.
This arrangement of the selectors gives a second low speed of a ratio further from the normal or fixed ratio.
It can be seen that the ratio between the speeds of the crown 11 and of the planet carrier 17 is such that in all the cases mentioned the crown 11 rotates in the same direction as the planet carrier 17, but at a greater speed than the latter. , this variation in speed depending on the gear trains in operation.
Furthermore, it can be seen that the ratio is such that, if the two crowns are coupled, that is to say when the pawls 12 are engaged, the differential effect of the two epicycloidal trains is greater than if the crown 19 is coupled to the planet carrier 17 by pawls 20, this fact having as a result that the increase in the gear ratio will be less than the decrease in the gear ratio.
In the example described, the planet gears 15 are double gears, but they can be single gears, if necessary, with the double gears being used to give a particular gear ratio. Alternatively, the pinions 21 can be double pinions if this is necessary to give any other particular ratio.
In order to demonstrate the close ratio and the further down ratio which can be obtained by the mechanism described by using quite ordinary toothed wheels, the following details will be cited: The ring gear 11 and the central pinions 23 have respectively 56 and 20 teeth, while the double planet gears 15 have 14 and 20 teeth respectively.
The toothed crown 19, the planet wheels 21 and the central pinion 25 have 60, 15 and 30 teeth respectively. Using such gears, the high speed gives an increase of 7.2% on direct drive, the first low speed gear gives a decrease of 7.65% and the second low speed gives a decrease of 20%.
Using the usual nomenclature, the graining ratios would therefore be approximately 80, 921/2, 100 and 1071/4. The 71/2 percentage decrease or the 71/4 increase in close or differential ratios is less than half of the 20 @ percentage decrease in normal or direct ratio which, in turn, is less than the increase. percentage tation of the normal or direct ratio which would be 25.
The operation of disengaging the pawls 1? is as follows: By moving from the position engaged with teeth 13, the claw piece 4 (I will first move axially into a position behind the pawls 13 and rotate alois by the effect of the force transmitted by the driving member 31 until it comes in begging with the second set of teeth 14 which are angularly displaced relative to the first set 13. During this small arc of rotation, no force is transmitted from the or gane leading 31 to the gear assembly, and thus the pawls 12 are not loaded.
These pawls which, until now, have transmitted the movement to the casing, are provided with bevelled ends 42 (fi- ,. 6) which can engage with the slurry part 40 while. this small arc of rotation, so that this end of the pawls is lifted to release the other end away from the cooperating ratchet teeth of the part 29. When this release has been effected, the part 40 engages with the second series of teeth 14 and by their intermediary the drive is applied directly to the ring gear.
The relationship between the axes of. rotation of the pawls 12, the drive teeth 14 and the width of the sliding part 40 is such that when this part resumes its driving position against the teeth 14, the pawls 12 are hand held out of engagement with the teeth 30 of room 29.
It will also be noted that by passing from the direct drive to a low speed, as described above, in the case where the drive member 31 is stationary and the casing of the means rotates so as to exceed the two series of pawls 12 and 20, the resistance of the mechanism will force. the smoothing neck piece 40 to resume a position on the non-driving face of the series of teeth 13.
To allow axial movement of the sliding part 40, the bevel 42 is cut in the pawls 12 (fig. 6), so that the part 40 can move axially, thanks to the wedging action of the bevel, by lifting the pawls 12, and then fall back on the non-driving face of the second series of teeth 14. By resuming the dragging again, the sliding part 40 will raise the pawls 12 thanks to the shape of their front rear part to drive teeth 11 as described above.
Pawls 7: 2 <: t 20 cause freewheeling action for all gear ratios.
As shown in fig. 7, the selector mechanism on the right side is of an already known construction, the key 35 being integral with the rod. 36. 3instead of the extension rod 54 of the fi. 1, another rod 62 fixed to the key 61 is used, this rod carrying a spring 63 which bears against a collar 64 screwed into the axis. The rod is supplied with the usual actuator chain. The spring 63 is stronger than the spring 57 and thus it would normally keep the sliding part 51 in engagement with the claws 53 of the planet carrier 22 to lock it on the axis 24.
By pulling the rod 62 outward (to the left), the sliding part 51 releases the organ ?? and engages the claws 50 to block the pinion 25 to. axis.
Note in this construction that it is possible to actuate the selector rod 36 to obtain a higher, normal (direct) or lower speed, while the selector rod 62 determines whether the higher or lower speed is of a close ratio or a distant ratio, depending on whether the pinion? 5 or the planet carrier and pinion ?? 23 is kept motionless.
The invention is of course not limited to the details of the embodiment described above, many of them being able to be modified without departing from the scope of the invention. The main features of the described gear change are as follows: 1.
The central pinion of the gear train B is connected to reciprocating elements of the gear train B by means of the epicyclic gear train A. so that the said central pinion is driven in the direction of the driving members and driven for thereby reduce the increase or decrease in the gearing ratio existing between the driving and driven elements of the epicyclic gear train B.
2. The central pinion of gear train B is connected to that of the elements of train B which reduces the increase in the gear ratio of this train by a greater value than it reduces the decrease in ratio. gear of this gear train.
3. The center pinion of gear train B can be locked separately from the center pinion of gear train A so as to allow train B to be used alone in the usual way to give a reduction in the gear ratio. gear, and not in conjunction with the secondary gear train, thereby obtaining four speeds.
4. The driving member may transmit force to the driven member in a ratio of 1: 1, or give a fixed increase or two decreases in gearing, which increases and decreases can be determined by the number of teeth. gear trains, the first increase and the first decrease having a closer ratio to the direct drive 1: 1 than that obtainable in a usual 6-pin gear of the same size, together with a subsequent decrease obtained by employing one of the gear trains in the usual way.
5. By providing a separate control for the sliding part operating between the two central gears of the epicyclic gear trains, a further increase in the gear ratio can be obtained equal to the increase obtained by using the primary train alone. , as in the case of. the reduction in the gear ratio e @ .pliqué above. This control separated by a spring and a rod gives a total of five speeds with two increases, two decreases and a direct drive.
6. All rotating elements are rotatably mounted within each other and in the gearshift box so as to be concentric with each other and with the axis of the box under all operating conditions and with a minimum relative movements.
7. The gear ratio can be changed at will by means of movable couplings between the driving and driven elements while the gear change is running.
8. All gear trains are rotatably supported on both sides to eliminate forces due to cantilever loads.
9. The relative speeds of the gear trains at. close ratios are kept lower than in conventional epicyclic gears, thus increasing the life of the gears as well as the load that can be transmitted by a given gear size.
A disadvantage of the construction of the first form of the above-described gearing is that the planetary wheels of the A-train, while the fourth and fifth gear ratios, ie the far ratio, are employed, are forced to rotate at speeds relatively high, this disadvantage can be avoided in another embodiment of the object of the invention.
In the second embodiment, means are provided for disengaging the planet carrier of the gear train A from the central pinion of the train B when this pinion is kept stationary.
In this second embodiment of the speed change, the ring gear of the gear train A is coupled to the driven organs and means are provided, a) for alternately coupling the planet carrier or the crown of the train B to the 'driven gear, b) to alternately couple the central wheel of train B to the axle to keep it stationary and to force the central wheel of train B to rotate with the planet carrier of train A around the stationary central wheel of the gear train A, and c) to couple the drive member alternatively to the,
planet carrier or to the crown of the gear train B. In this second embodiment, a selector mechanism is arranged so that for a four-speed gear, the central pinion of the train B is forced to rotate with the planet carrier of train A around the stationary central pinion of train A, and while the planet carrier of train B is released from the driven unit (the crown of train B being coupled to the driven unit), the driving member can be coupled alternately to the crown of train B for normal or direct gear, or to the planet carrier of gear B for high speed at close ratio,
or while the driving member is connected to the crown of train B, the latter is released from the driven member (the planet carrier of train B then being coupled to the driven member) to obtain a low gear ratio brought closer, or while the driving member is still coupled to the crown of train b 'and the planet carrier of train B is still coupled to the driven member, the central pin of train B is kept immobile, while the train A can run empty to obtain a fourth or lower gear speed further away; or for a high fifth speed of a more distant gear, the selector mechanism is arranged as for the fourth gear ratio but with the driving member connected to the planet carrier of train B and the crown of train B connected to the 'organ driven.
In this second embodiment, the central pinion. integral with the gear train A is kept immobile at all times and the means for coupling and disengaging the planet carrier of train A with the central pinion of train B also comprise means for keeping the central pinion of train D stationary. 'gear B.
As shown in fig. 8, this gear change has many similar construction elements to that of the fi. 1 and these like elements are designated with the same reference numerals.
The main differences are as follows 1. The central pinion 5 is fixed to de meure by grooves 24a and a nut 24b on the axis 24 and this pinion does not have 5U claws like that of the first example.
?. The planet carrier or the cage 22 is separate from the central pinion 23 and the disc-shaped rear part of this cage carries an internal toothed ring 22c. The pinion 23 is provided with long claws 53a equivalent to the claws 53 of the first example, while these claws 53a extend near the internal ring gear 22c of the cage 22. The pinion 23 carries a flange 23a which constitutes a stopper for a spring 531)
carried by claws 53a and resting against the rear surface of claws 67 described later.
3. Instead of the sliding part 51, there is a sliding key 65 mounted in axis 24 and carrying a rotary collar 66 journalled on axis 24 and having on its outer periphery the claws 67 which are permanently engaged with the pins. long claws 53a. and can be engaged with or disengaged from the inner ring gear 22e of the. cage ??. Between the collar 66 and the.
key 65 there is a ring 65a, the face of which is cut out to engage with the ends of the key, the other face of this ring constituting a thrust bearing for the collar 66. This rotary collar 66 has internal teeth 68 can come into engagement with (the teeth 69 integral with the axis? 4 immediately behind the pinion? 3. The sliding key 65 can be actuated by the rod 36 in the same way as was the case for the sliding part 51 of Fig. 1.
The sliding bodies are normally held so that the cage 22 is connected to the pinion 23 to rotate together with it by means of a spring 53b.
It can be seen that for direct and close ratio gear changes, the sliding key 65 remains in a position in which the cage 22 is connected to the pinion 23, the selector mechanism operating exactly as described in the first example. For the distant lower fourth gear, the rod 36 moves the smoothing neck key 65 so that the claws 67 of the collar 66 disengage from the inner ring gear 22c, while the inner teeth 68 on the collar engage with the teeth 69 on the axis, so that the cage 22 is thus released,
while the pinion 23 is kept stationary since the long claws 53a still engage with the outer claws 67 on the collar 66.
To obtain a fifth gear ratio, a separate control mechanism will preferably be employed to move the sliding key 65 and its collar 66 in the same manner as described for moving the sliding part 51 (Fig. 7), so that, while the collar 66 was in a position to hold the pinion 23 immobile, the other selector 40 could be moved to the position shown in FIG. 3 which was necessary before for the top speed at close ratio.
The construction of the speed change shown in fig. 8 has several secondary features such as the provision of pawls (not shown) of the freewheel mechanism in a groove 20a and the extension of the cage 22 of the gear train A towards the edge of the groove 20a by a flange annular 22d to save space in the axial direction. Further, instead of the double planet gears, single planet gears 15 are employed, giving space for the spring 53b which returns the sliding collar 66, but this modification does not change the fact that the gear ratio decrease is greater than the increase gear ratio.
Thus, in a practical execution, the following ratios were approximately obtained 1st speed - reduction of 25 2nd - reduction of 10% 3rd - direct drive 4m ('- increase of 9.1 / 10 5th - increase of 3.3 "/ 3% The invention is not limited to the construction details shown, some of which can be modified without departing from its spirit.
