Transmission mechanism for vehicles comprising an electric motor associated with a heat engine. The object of the present invention is a transmission mechanism for vehicles comprising an electric motor associated with a heat engine and particularly for cars whose traction is effected by the four wheels by means of a heat engine and a electric motor.
Usually automobile traction is effected by the rear wheels. However, front wheel drive has some advantages over rear wheel drive. The car turns much more easily and the danger of skidding is much reduced. However, this front-wheel drive has the great drawback of not having sufficient grip to climb rather strong ramps, especially since in this case, the force to be transmitted by the engine is maximum.
It has already been recommended to achieve traction by the four wheels and to use for this purpose a heat engine and an electric motor, the heat engine acting on the front wheels by a mechanical link comprising a change of speed and on the wheels. rear wheels by an electrical connection! comprising a dynamo and an electric motor.
The transmission mechanism for vehicles forming the subject of the present invention is also suitable for moving forward on a level, uphill and downhill and is characterized in that a clutch clearance makes it possible to couple the heat engine. with one or the other of the axles by means of connections with different transmission ratio and of coupling by means of a drive member the electric motor which is preferably connected to a buffer battery, with one of these links, in that an electrical connection makes it possible to associate a drum battery with the electric motor at will.
So that the same speed ratio can be established between the two transmissions for the multi-year drive of the four wheels of the vehicle by the heat engine, a speed change can be inserted in one or the other of the two transmissions. The heat engine can be used to drive a dynamo which is connected to a buffer battery which is itself connected to the electric motor.
The electric motor arranged between the heat engine and an axle of the vehicle, preferably the rear axle, can be coupled to this axle by means of a drive device (.one-way) preventing the electric motor. reach an exaggerated speed when the drive is performed at high speed by the heat engine alone. The electric motor used can advantageously be a series motor providing a powerful starting torque. The rotor of this series motor can be connected to the shaft which it actuates by an electromagnetic clutch, which only achieves complete connection after a certain time.
In order to automatically adjust the association of the heat engine and the electric motor, it is possible to provide a control system which can be influenced by two factors which are respectively the effective speed of the vehicle or the heat engine and the position of a lever controlling the heat engine power supply. This control is carried out, preferably, on the one hand, by the acceleration pedal of the heat engine and, on the other hand, by a centri fuge regulator possibly acting with a delayed effect during deceleration, for example via eyelet or similar system.
In order to avoid excessive discharge of the battery, when the vehicle climbs a steep slope, a time relay or any other device in tercalé in the circuit of the electric motor is preferably provided. This relay can. be established so as to operate after a shorter time the stronger the current strength.
When this relay operates, it can actuate a light or acoustic warning device which signals to the driver the opportu- nity to change gear, ie the transmission ratio.
This relay can moreover, instead of actuating a signal, cut off the circuit of the lockup clutch and insert the reduced speed clutch.
The buffer battery supplying current to the electric motor can be recharged by this motor provided that it is of the shunt or compound type or possibly by a triggered dynamo - ,,, e mechanically connected to the heat engine, starting and accessing The vehicle is operated by connecting the electric motor to the battery.
It is known that by modifying the excitation of a motor, the characteristic curves are modified. Speed control as a function of acceleration, deceleration and terrain profile can be achieved by the intervention of a pendulum influencing the excitation of the electric motor.
In order to control the operation of the heat engine by the current of the electric motor circuit, provision is preferably made for a device for supplying the heat engine consisting of a servomotor, the operation of which is controlled by an electro-motor. magnet made up of two windings respectively interposed, one in parallel with the battery>, and the other in series with the latter so that these two windings act in the same direction when the battery is discharging and in the opposite direction when she is in charge.
The heat engine can be connected to. one or more axles by one or more magnetic clutches automatically achieving complete connection when the maximum voltage is reached at the motor terminals to which the circuits of these clutches are connected.
It is also possible to provide for the control of these circuits by the electromagnet alluded to above, the heat engine being disengaged from the axle or axles which it controls when the intensity of the charging current of the battery reaches a predetermined value. In order to move the vehicle in both directions of travel for the same direction of travel of the heat engine, the engine can be engaged either with the front axles or with the rear axles by inverted pinions. This arrangement makes it possible to produce an auxiliary safety brake by energizing both the clutches arranged on each side of the heat engine.
It should also be noted that the automatic change of the connections of the electric motor that can be provided during the mechanical switching of these clutches.
The accompanying drawings represent, diagrammatically and by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
In fig. 1, the transmission mechanism intended, for example, for a motor vehicle, comprises as a source of energy a heat engine 1 which is mechanically connected with a current generator 2. This generator is intended to supply the current to the electric motor 3 and to charge a buffer battery 4 supplying the electric motor in: case of need. The electric motor actuates a shaft 5 which can be connected with the heat engine by a clutch system 6. The shaft of the electric motor 3 can be connected to the rear axle 7 by a gear 12 by means of an electromagnetic clutch 8 receiving current from the battery 4.
This clutch 8 only achieves complete connection after a certain time, when the back electromotive force has reached a value sufficient to reduce the magnitude of the starting current.
To this end, a small relay 25 is connected to the terminals of the armature of the electric motor 3, which when the voltage across the armature reaches a certain value, closes the circuit of the magnetic clutch 8. In this way , by closing the circuit of the electric motor, the latter starts up and as soon as the voltage across the armature reaches a certain value, the clutch 8 is automatically energized. The relay 25 can be replaced by a centrifugal one actuated by the electric motor 3 and which automatically closes the circuit of the magnetic clutch 8 from a certain engine speed.
To prevent the electric motor 3 from rotating at an exaggerated speed when at high speed the heat engine intervenes alone, a freewheel 9 is inserted between the electric motor <B> 3 </B> and the rear axle 7. This wheel 9 prevents the transmission of the rotational movement of axis 7 from the rear wheel to motor 3.
Between the electric motor 3 and the rear axle 7 is also interposed a gear change 10 actuated by a lever 11. This lever can occupy three positions I, II and III: The first is the forward position, the third is the reverse position and the second is the neutral position. In this last position, the electric motor 3 is isolated from the rear axle 7, which allows the starting of the thermal motor by means of the electric motor.
A speed reducer 13 can be arranged either between the heat engine 1 and the electric motor 3, or between the latter and the rear axle 7.
The heat engine 1 is connected to the front axle 14 by a shaft 15 carrying transmission members 16 and a clutch system 17 serving to connect the heat engine 1 with the shaft 15. The clutches 17 and 6 can be engaged and disengaged by the driver by mechanical means.
To start the motor vehicle, the driver turns the gearshift lever 11 from the neutral position II to; forward gear position I and separates the front axle 14 from the heat engine 1 by opening the clutch 17, while it connects the electric motor 3 to the heat engine by closing the clutch 6. When the voltage at terminals i of l The armature of the electric motor has reached a certain value, the relay 25 closes the electromagnetic clutch 8, so that the rear axle 7 is driven by the heat engine 1 and the electric motor 3. When the vehicle is when running, the drive can only be carried out on the front axle 14 by the heat engine 1 after closing the clutch 17.
In this case, the electric motor 3 serves only to compensate for the increase in energy required by the rear axle 7 due to acceleration or other peaks of power.
The switching on or off of the electric motor can be carried out automatically by placing in the motor circuit two movable contacts A and B, one of which, for example contact A, is controlled by a centrifugal regulator 26 driven by axis 5 at the by means of an intermediate member 18, tan say that the butterfly? 0 placed in the gas supply duct 21 of the heat engine and actuated by the accelerator pedal 22, transmits its movements to the other movable contact B by the 'intermediary of lever 19.
When the heat engine 1 is idling, the butterfly 20 is placed almost perpendicular to the gas current in the duct 21 and moves the two terminals A and B. When accelerating, the butterfly 20 tilts and tends to become parallel to the gas current bringing the two points -4 and B.
The speed increases, the centrifugal regulator <B>. </B> a, -it and removes the two terminals A and B. This action of the centrifugal regulator is possibly carried out with delayed effect during deceleration by means of a eyelet 23.
If, for a well-determined position of the accelerator pedal 22, the speed decreases and becomes less than the predetermined speed, there is <I> </I> contact at <I> A, </I> B closing the electrical circuit allowing the use of electric traction to increase the speed of the vehicle.
When the heat engine is idling, with the vehicle stopped, the <I> A </I> and <I> B </I> contacts are moved apart by a certain amount, and the circuit of the electric motor 3 is chopped off. When the driver presses lightly on the accelerator 22, the thermal motor 1 picks up speed and the contacts A and .B touch each other, the electric motor is switched on, the car starts by closing the clutch 8 and clutch 6 with simultaneous opening of clutch 17.
As the car accelerates, the centrifugal governor 26 actuated by the heat engine for example, moves the component 18 in the direction of the arrow X and, after this component has completed a <I> Y stroke, </I> moves the component aside switch <I> A </I> of <I> B </I> thus cutting off the circuit of the electric motor 3. If the driver puts more pressure on the accelerator 22, contacts A and B touch each other again, the electric motor comes in again to increase speed (the vehicle and the contacts will again be moved apart.
If the vehicle slows down, for example when it approaches a steep ramp, and if this slowing down is sufficient to force the centrifugal governor 26 to move the contact A and to close the circuit. of the electric motor 3, the electric motor comes into action again and facilitates the drive.
In the circuit of the electric motor 3 can be connected a time relay or any other similar device not shown., Tiné to limit the running time of the electric motor. This device fitted with a warning device forces the driver to change gears. It can also directly cause a change in the transmission ratio between the heat engine and the two axles.
As can be seen from the transmission mechanism shown in fig. 1, the electric motor 3 intervenes intermittently whenever the need arises, either for starting or for rapidly accelerating the vehicle after slowing down. At the same time, the driving of the front wheels and the driving of the two axles 7 and 14 are possible. In addition, it is completely impossible for the driver to overcharge the battery 4.
When the electric motor is a "compound" type motor, it is possible to recover electrical energy by transforming the work resulting from variations in the vehicle's vital forces into electrical energy. This transformation takes place in the compound motor which in this case works as a generator and delivers a charging current through the battery pack.
In this case, therefore, provision is made to establish a permanent connection between the motor and said battery and to use a regulator varying the shunt excitation and the current supplied by the battery according to the speed of the vehicle, and which is at turn influenced by the accelerator pedal of the heat engine.
For this purpose, it is possible to use a centrifugal governor actuated by the electric motor and interposing resistances in the shunt excitation as the speed of the motor increases. The accelerator pedal of the heat engine can also act on these resistors or on the centrifugal regulator itself. The regulator can also be automatic, for example of a well-known type, "vibrator", used to regulate the current of the charging dynamos of the batteries of motor cars. This regulator would be influenced by the voltage and by the current delivered by the battery. The accelerator pedal would act on its side to modify the regulator constants in a suitable manner.
In this way, the current in the electric motor would be reduced automatically to approximately 0 when the electric motor would no longer have to intervene as back-up.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 2, a heat engine 102, is mechanically connected to a small charge dynamo 103 in electrical connection with the buffer battery 104. This heat engine can be engaged with the rear axle 10'5 or the front axle 106 by the 'intermediate magnetic clutches 107 and 108 connected to the terminals of the electric motor <B> 109. </B> The latter is integral with the link 110 connecting the heat engine to the front axle 106.
The electric motor 109 used is a shunt motor or preferably a compound motor composed of the series winding 111 and of the shunt winding 112. It is known to use these types of motor when it is desired to recover energy. electric energy. In the present case, this motor can, in certain cases, play the role of motor, while in other cases, it can play the role of charge dynamo of the aforementioned buffer battery and even be sufficient to replace completely. the load dynamo 103 ,. It will be used in particular as a motor when the resistive torque exceeds the torque of the heat engine, for example when climbing a ramp, while during centering, braking and even in certain circumstances during level operation,
it will function as a generator and will recover or transform energy by charging the buffer battery.
It is known that it is the motors with excitation in series which best meet the driving conditions of the vehicles, but on the other hand it is desirable to eliminate or reduce the action of the series winding to charge the batteries of Accumulators. For this purpose, an automatic circuit breaker 113 is used with a view to short-circuiting all or part of the series excitation when the battery is charged and to interpose the series excitation to the maximum as soon as the battery sends current into the battery. engine.
If it is desired to maintain the constant speed of a compound motor when the resistance neck is increasing, it is known practice to decrease the inducing flux. In the example described, the control of the inductor flow is carried out automatically by means of a pendulum regulator 114 mounted in series on the shunt inductor circuit. This regulator moves on pads between which are interposed resistors 115. When the vehicle is downhill, resistors 15 are fully or partially withdrawn from the inductor circuit, while they are fully or partially inserted when it is lowered. climb a ramp.
This modification of the inducing flux according to the inclination of the ground is obtained whatever the direction of travel of the vehicle by means of a reverser 116 ,. It should in fact be noted that if the vehicle moves forward and descends a ramp, the regulator 114 occupies a position such that the resistances inserted are weak or zero. These same resistances would remain interposed if the vehicle moves in the other direction, that is to say climbs the ramp.
Only in this case is the 1.16 reverser used, the key goes from position 116a, 116e to position 116b, 116e and automatically maintains an inductive flow depending on the inclination of the ground and possibly on acceleration. and decelerations. This device also has the advantage of acting by its inertia on each deceleration or each braking on the shunt excitation of the motor, the latter functioning in this case as a generator and recovering energy.
It goes without saying that the operation of the aforesaid reverser can operate at the same time, by an appropriate connection, the ren, pouring of the connections of the electric motor.
The small load dynamo 103 will not have to intervene often and could even be eliminated in certain cases, thanks to the current produced by the electric motor 109 operating as a generator either by recovery during descents, braking and slowing down, or by transformation. of the energy available to the heat engine which is transmitted to it due to the movement of the vehicle. The electrical energy thus produced may in certain cases be perfectly sufficient to compensate for the electrical energy expended during starting and acceleration.
The small charge dynamo <B> 103 </B> is seen as an automatic charge regulator, not shown, as well as an automatic circuit breaker 117. These two devices allow it to be automatically removed from the battery circuit each time. time that the traction motor receives current from it.
In order to control the supply of the thermal engine by the current of the motor, use is made of a servomotor operating as follows: an electromagnet <B> 118 </B> provided with a plate 119 activates two submersibles 120 and 121 opening in the opposite direction. These two valves respectively control the arrival and departure of a liquid under pressure entering ixne chamber 122 in communication with a chamber 128 where moves a piston 124 integral, by means of a lever 125, of the butterfly valve. 12'6 or any other similar device controlling the arrival of fuel in the heat engine.
This electromagnet 118 is subjected, on the one hand, to the action of a spring 127 tending to open the discharge valve of the booster and, on the other hand, to that of two windings, one of which 1.29 is arranged shout. parallel with the battery or with the electric motor, while the other 128 is in series with the latter. These two windings act in the same direction: direction when the battery is discharging and in the opposite direction when it is charging.
The arrangement described is such that when the vehicle has reached a certain predetermined speed, the additional mechanical energy supplied by the electric motor during starting can be reduced or canceled, and this automatically without displacement of the motor. net of the controller, this result being obtainable by means of a centrifugal regulator acting on the excitation of the electric motor from the above-mentioned predetermined speed.
In this case, the speed of the vehicle should be maintained by acting on the servo motor controlling the power supply to the heat engine. This result can be obtained by causing the above-mentioned centrifugal regulator to act to modify the operating conditions of this booster.
The two magnetic clutches 107 and 108 coupling the heat engine to the front and rear axles operate automatically and in a progressive manner. Their intervention is controlled by the switches 136 and 137 inserted in their circuit. They are connected to the terminals of the electric motor 109 and re-read the complete connection when the resistors interposed in the latter are removed from the circuit via the controller 132.
In the case where by the operation of the latter one cuts the motor circuit, one cuts at the same time that of the clutch.
In order to recover the maximum energy when the electric motor operates as a generator, it is desirable to decouple the heat engine from the axle (s) controlled by the latter and at the same time reduce the quantity of fuel so as to make it run at the same time. slow motion. In this way, part of the energy to be recovered is prevented from being absorbed by the passive resistors of the heat engine. This condition is achieved as follows: The electromagnet 118 is provided with a flexible metal blade 13 lame \ insulated from its core and which closes the circuit of the clutches by the contacts 139 and 140. This closing occurs as soon as the battery is discharged and the clutch circuit is automatically cut off when the electric motor begins to charge the battery with a certain intensity.
In this way, energy recovery is maximum and fuel consumption minimum.
It goes without saying that the clutch circuit can be closed or cut by a small separate relay influenced by the current flowing through the electric motor.
When the cylinder 123 of the booster is under atmospheric pressure, the fuel intake is reduced to the amount necessary to operate the heat engine at idle. This quantity is adjusted by means of a stop screw 141 limiting the stroke of the piston and thereby preventing complete closure of the pipe for supplying the fuel to the thermal engine.
This mechanism also allows the combustion engine to automatically idle when the vehicle is stationary. As a result, the possible fuel flow is reduced to a minimum, so that there is no fear of runaway when starting the heat engine.
In the case where use is made of a heat engine operating in both directions, the axle control gears are not reversed and the two clutches can be actuated simultaneously. If, on the contrary, use is made of a heat engine operating in one direction, the transmission of the force to the front and rear axles is effected by means of inverted gears 130 and 131. These make it possible to move the vehicle in both directions for the same direction of rotation of the heat engine. It should also be noted that the switching of these clutches changes to. at the same time the traction motor connections.
The inverted pinion device simultaneously provides an auxiliary safety brake, since it suffices when stopping to energize both clutches at the same time to prevent any movement of the vehicle.
The complete control of the car can be done by the controller 132 which can move on pads such as 133 and 134 connected by resistors. The resistors wedged between the pads 133 are arranged such that the total resistance of the shunt inductor circuit of the motor increases as the controller 132 moves away from its initial position towards the closed position of the circuit.
This increase in resistance creates a decrease in the shunt inductor flux and thereby results in an increase in vehicle speed.
The resistors interposed between the pads 134 are arranged such that the total resistance of the induced circuit of the motor decreases as the controller 132 moves away from its initial position towards the final closed position of the circuit.
The use of the electric motor acting as a generator when slowing down and braking combined with normal brakes automatically constitutes speed-dependent self-variable braking. This role played by the engine makes it possible to recover a large part of the energy, achieving great fuel economy. It should be noted that the invention is not limited to the use of a single heat engine associated with a single electric motor, but extends to the use of several s of these units.
