Cooling device on drive systems with internal combustion engines. Vehicles driven by internal combustion engines, be they road or rail vehicles, are mostly equipped with a heat exchanger to which cooling air is blown by a fan driven by the internal combustion engine. In order to keep the cooling temperature of the engine at a certain level, a regulation of the cooling effect of the heat exchanger is neces sary.
This is done by partially covering the radiator surface, by throttling the air flow, by arranging a re adjustable secondary outlet or, more recently, by a mechanical clutch, with means of which the fan drive is switched off at times as required.
Those types of control that do not influence the fan themselves, but aim at throttling or redirecting the air flow, are uneconomical because some of the energy discharged into the air by the fan has to be destroyed.
However, the type of regulation in which the fan is switched on and off as required by a clutch has the disadvantage that it occurs with frequent switching operations and the large moment of inertia of the fan wheel. there is great wear and tear on the friction linings of the clutch.
Since the space available for a cooling system is generally very limited, but especially in the case of vehicles such as railcars, sophisticated, ra.schlaufende fans must generally be used.
However, the higher the speed of the fan, the greater the noise it causes, which is very unpleasant, for example, in railcars. All these disadvantages should, according to the invention, be eliminated by the fan from the internal combustion engine via a Flow coupling is driven with controllable liquid filling.
Advantageously, the speed of the fan can be changed continuously from zero to full speed by changing the degree of filling of this clutch, so it can be fully adapted to the respective operating conditions. The setting of the clutch to the filling corresponding to the fan speed required in each case is expediently carried out automatically by means of a heat sensor.
As is well known, the dimensions and the speed of the fan are usually calculated for the most unfavorable conditions, so that the cooling temperature does not exceed a certain level even on the hottest days. A full utilization of the cooling system is therefore out of the question for most of the operating time. In the known systems, it is therefore usually necessary to drive in a throttled state or with frequent interruptions, but the high speed of the fan calculated for the most unfavorable conditions is always noticeable, in particular by the noise it causes.
The charge control is advantageous in such a way that the fan is only operated at the speed that is just required to keep the coolant below a desired temperature. The highest speed will then only occur in the rare case in which the unfavorable conditions on which the calculation of the cooling device is based prevail. In all other conditions, i.e. for the greater part of the entire operating time, with. reduced speed with quiet running.
One advantage of such a device is that in all operating states in which it is not fully utilized, ie practically during the vast majority of the entire operating time, it has a significantly lower power requirement than the conventional cooling devices. To prove this, for example, the power consumption of a cooling device with intermittent regulation is compared with the power consumption of the cooling device with constant regulation.
If one assumes that the cooling devices only have to dissipate half of the amount of heat that corresponds to their full capacity under certain operating conditions, then the fan with intermittent regulation would run at full speed for about 52 minutes and then 1 / z minute stand still and so on. Its power consumption would therefore correspond on average to half the full power in the time unit.
In the case of a fan with constant regulation, on the other hand, the fan would run continuously at half the speed, namely because the fluid coupling works with 50% slip, so that its output speed is equal to half the input speed. speed is.
Since the fan only consumes a quarter of its full torque at half speed, there is a need on the drive shaft of the clutch of a quarter of full power compared to over half with intermittent regulation. By a 'cooling device with flow coupling, the effect of excellent damping of the vibrations occurring between the motor and fan, which is generally known in the case of flow couplings, is also achieved.
The drive connection between the fan and the motor can be designed so that when the coupling is complete, the maximum speed of the fan is reached at a lower than the maximum speed of the motor, so that the full utilization of the cooling device is also made possible, and that when the motor is increased speed the speed of the fan due to the increase in the slip of the flow coupling is kept at about the same height ge.
This training is of particular advantage in railcar systems with fluid transmission, for example, if the latter is used for braking.
During the braking process, the engine runs at its idle speed, or at least at a lower speed than the maximum speed, while the cooling device for the transmission fluid, which is built into a unit with the engine cooler, releases a large amount of heat resulting from the braking, the operating fluid of the Fluid transmission is to be discharged.
Because of the controllability of the fan speed, the fan does not need to run at a speed corresponding to the reduced motor speed, but can be operated at a higher speed. There is therefore the possibility of fully utilizing the cooling device even at low engine speeds.
The invention is not only suitable for drive systems on vehicles, but also for fixed systems where there are highly variable operating conditions.
In the drawing, a Ausführungsbei is playing the device according to the invention is shown schematically. The motor 1 drives the transmission 3 and the shaft 4 about a (not shown) vehicle axis via the shaft 2.
Another drive shaft 5 leads BEZW from the engine. from the gear box to the fluid coupling 6, which is equipped, for example, with a surrounding container 7 and scoop tube 8, and to the fan 9, which blows cooling air to the heat exchanger 10. On the heat exchanger 10, a heat sensor 11 is attached, which acts via a linkage 12 on a connected to the scoop tube 8 He bel.
The warmer the coolant enters or leaves the heat exchanger (depending on the location of the heat sensor at the cooler inlet or outlet), the further the end of the scoop tube is swiveled outwards via the heat sensor and the greater the filling of the coupling which results in an increase in the fan speed. The fan speed is automatically regulated depending on the cooling temperature.
