aber die Kondensation in drei Abschnitten. durchgeführt werden, wobei zuerst Resol, dann :das Resitol und schliess lich dass Resit gebildet wird. Diese Verfahren haben den Übelstand, dass die Reaktion stür- misch, nahezu explosionsartig verläuft, wo durch;
So z.

Process for the production of an ICresol synthetic resin. The subject matter of the invention is a process: for the production of a cresol synthetic resin: which is characterized in that a mixture of: the three isomeric cresols is condensed under alkaline conditions with formaldehyde in the presence of sulfur in auxiliaries containing S-S bonds.
The known from condensation products of phenols and cresols with aldehyde, z. B. formaldehyde existing synthetic resins are Herge using various methods.
The most commonly used process for the production of phenolic and cresol resins is the novolac process. According to the novolack process:
phenols or cresols are condensed under acidic conditions. In this way, novolack is obtained which is not changed any further by the action of heat and pressure. This novolac is mostly converted into the resist by hegamiethylenetetramine.
The cresol resins produced by this process cannot be used as molding compounds because they etch the For men during pressing. In addition, such cresol resins cannot be mixed with phenolic resins at will, which is sometimes felt to be an inconvenience.
The reason is that the cresol resins have different curing speeds than the phenolic resins and require a longer curing time of the pure phenolic resins. In the best case, one can only use mixtures of phenolic resins and cresol resins,
which only contain a very small proportion of cresol resins, process them together.
There are also known methods in wel chen phenols or cresols with aldehyde, for. B. formaldehyde can be condensed under alkaline conditions (Resölterfahren). With these known procedures:
but the condensation in three sections. be carried out, whereby first resole, then: the resitol and finally that resite is formed. The disadvantage of these processes is that the reaction proceeds stormily, almost explosively, wherever it occurs;
It is extremely difficult to break off the reaction at a certain point in time to form an intermediate product with certain properties, i.e. it makes it impossible to divide the process into its sections, which is essential for the production of molded and cast parts from such condensation products , moreover, the stormy course of the reaction also endangers the equipment.
If you try to weaken the reaction, z. B. by lowering the amount of alkali, so decrease the yield so much that the process no longer eats efficiently. Resites produced according to the resol process also have the disadvantage for paint production that they are highly viscous and usually hard and brittle at normal temperature.
so that they require relatively large amounts of solvent to solve them.
According to the process of the invention, the disadvantages of the known processes can be avoided with a practically quantitative yield when producing a cresol resin. It is advisable to work in a strongly alkaline solution.
Such kres.alharze produced in the presence of sulfur in S-S-Bonding containing auxiliaries have the advantage that they can be processed solely as molding compounds without accessing the molds.
Such cresol resins, in contrast to the cresol resins produced by the known methods, can also be mixed with phenolic resins in any mixing ratio, suitably with phenolic resins produced by the same method and then processed.
For the resol process, such a process according to the invention has the particular advantage that the reaction process is weakened while maintaining an almost quantitative yield.
Through the process according to the invention, on the one hand, the properties of the cresol resins with regard to their reaction and polymerization speed can be changed; Means to obtain molding compounds from cresol resins alone as well as in any mixing ratio with other resins.
The present process has, which is particularly beneficial for the production of paints, the advantage that you can get products of low viscosity, where you can get by with very small amounts of solvent to dissolve the resin. For the production of casting resins, this low viscosity has the particular advantage that it hardens quickly. but easy, castable resins are available.
The process according to the invention is carried out in such a way that a mixture of the three isomeric cresols is condensed under alkaline conditions with formaldehyde in the presence of auxiliaries containing sulfur in S-S bonds, it being possible for the condensation to be carried out with or without catalysts.
Working with '.Catalysts, where not only the uptake of Schwe- fellaus, S-S bond favoring cata- lysts, but also the usual catalysts favoring condensation can be used, offers a means of increasing the polymerization rate, respectively. To influence the rate of condensation.
The process can also be carried out in such a way that, in the course of the condensation, the added amount of the customary catalysts which influence the condensation is changed, but in the course of the process, other catalysts which influence the condensation can optionally be used each time.
In an expedient embodiment of the process, a mixture of the three isomeric cresols with formaldehyde with a molar ratio of aldehyde to cresol in the finished product of at least 1:
1, but condensed if the ratio is greater. When carrying out the process, some of the formaldehyde can also only be added during the condensation.
It is advantageous to use poly sulfides, especially alkalis. and alkaline earths as substances that contain sulfur in an S-S bond. But you can also work with oxygen-containing substances that contain sulfur in S-S bonds.
These substances containing sulfur in S-S bonds can either be added as such or they can form in the reaction mixture. So z.
For example, such oxygen-containing substances as polythionates can be formed from sulfur-containing substances in the presence of oxygenation agents. Suitable oxidizing agents are, for example, chlorine-releasing substances, e.g.
B. p-T'oluolsulfonchloramidnatrium, Natriumhypoehlorit, also persulfates and the like.
The reaction rate can be increased by adding the usual. the condensation be influencing catalysts such. B. react alkaline & substances are influenced.
Catalysts that promote the uptake of sulfur from S and S bonds can all be used as vulcanization accelerators in rubber manufacture, e. B.; the compounds of alkaline earths and especially those referred to as ultra, hesah accelerators. Vulcanization accelerators, such as
B. the dithio acids, xanthogenic acids etc. and: their salts, expediently water-soluble and water-soluble ge made vulcanization accelerators.
The condensation product can be freed from the adhering water during the condensation (e.g. in a vacuum) or after the condensation has ended.
The viscosity of the product depends on the amount of customary catalyst used to influence the condensation. It is advisable to determine this amount of catalyst so that
da8 while maintaining the most quantitative possible yield, a resin of the lowest possible viscosity and with good curing properties is obtained.
The resin produced in this way can either be cast as such, dissolved in solvent or pressed together with filler materials, if necessary with the addition of catalysts.
The sulfur in the S-S bond contains the: Substances have the effect in the process according to the present invention, the condensation of the phenol and the cresols with the formaldehyde:
To make it uniform, that is, to ensure a uniform course of the reaction, which on the one hand makes it possible to reduce the condensation at each intermediate stage (e.g.
B. both @ Res @ olstufe) to interrupt while obtaining a uniform product and on the other hand to obtain a higher quantitative yield (90% and more).
As for the chemical reaction of these substances with the ph-enol-cresol-formaldehyde: condensate, nothing can be said about it, since such complicated substances as the synthetic resins of a structural. analys, e are not accessible.
One thing is certain - only - that! The substances containing sulfur in S: S bonds do not significantly influence the properties of the end product, but rather only take part in the condensation process, in which, like catalysts:
Act.
The substances containing the sulfur in an S-S bond evidently do not enter the synthetic resin as such, but sulfur is split off from this compound and attached to the synthetic resin. After the condensation, the sulfur is in S-,
Substance containing S-binding no longer available.
So it is not the auxiliary substance containing the sulfur in S-S bond that enters the plastic, but the synthetic resin absorbs the sulfur of this substance, decomposing the auxiliary substance, but the amount of sulfur absorbed is so small that
that a stoichiometric conversion between tween the auxiliary material and your synthetic resin cannot be inadequate.
The properties of the synthetic resin produced by the process according to the application differ from those synthetic resins which have been produced in S-S bonds without the intermediary of such auxiliaries.
Exemplary embodiments: 1. 80 kg of technical cresol (each containing 33 ortho-, meta- and para-cresol) are mixed with 5 kg of sodium polysulfide, then 83 kg of technical formaldehyde are added and heated. After the reaction has ended, the water is removed in vacuo.
