Process for improving the properties of non-curable condensation products
from phenols and aldehydes The subject of the main patent 556 9s7 is a process
for the production of fast-curing, odorless phenol-aldehyde resins or mixtures
the same with other resins, fillers or the like, consisting in that one curable
Condensation products of phenols and aldehydes or their mixtures with the above
Substances with the addition of oxides or hydroxides of the earth metals, alkaline earth metals
or heavy metals processed, with the addition of metal compounds no longer
than to completely bind the free phenols, phenol alcohols or others
similar unbound by-products is necessary. In further training
This process has been found that using the metal compounds mentioned
also improve the properties of non-curable phenol-aldehyde resins (novolaks)
and in particular their conversion into the insoluble and infusible state
with the help of hardening agents, such as. B. formaldehyde, polymeric aldehydes or aldehyde
releasing substances, can be facilitated if one in the following described
How to proceed: Fillers are added to the novolaks or their mixtures
o. The like. With the metal oxides mentioned, such as. B: calcium oxide, magnesium oxide, iron oxide,
Zinc oxide or hydroxides of these metals, in such an amount that the in the
Novolaks contain free phenols, phenolic alcohols and similar unbound by-products
and those mostly used as catalysts in the manufacture of novolaks
Acids or acidic substances are saturated. Is it a
Novolak that does not use acid or other acidic catalysts
was produced, it is sufficient to add only as much metal compounds as
to bind the free phenols, etc. is necessary.
When carrying out the invention, you can first use the novolak for

Carry out components in a suitable manner in one operation.
The mixing of the metal compounds with the resins or resin compositions can be carried out in the manner described in the main patent at normal or elevated temperature, the resins being in a solid, liquid or dissolved state. In all cases it is advisable to ensure that the added metal compound is distributed as evenly as possible in the mass. The amount of metal compounds required is determined, as stated in the main patent, in such a way that the proportion of bromine-consuming constituents is determined by the method of K oppeschar and from this, taking into account the amounts of acid or acid contained in the novolak or the novolak composition active substances, the necessary amount of metal compounds is calculated. EXAMPLE 10 kg of phenol-aldeliyd resin (novolak) with 0.7 kg of bromine-binding constituents are mixed with 0.15 kg of magnesium oxide (optionally with the addition of fillers and dyes) at elevated temperature. Example 10 kg of phenol-aldehyde resin (novolak) with 0.35 kg of bromine-binding constituents and 10 kg of wood flour are melted together with 0.12 kg of calcium oxide (optionally with the addition of dyes). After hardening agents have been added, the mixture is then ground and pressed in a known manner with the action of heat.
Beispiel 3 9 kg Phenol-Aldehyd-Harz (Novolak) mit o,7 kg brombindenden
Bestandteilen, i kg Kolophonium, 3o kg Asbest werden (gegebenenfalls unter Zusatz
von Farbstoffen) mit 0,24 kg Calciumhydroxyd zusammengeschmolzen.Example 3 9 kg of phenol-aldehyde resin (novolak) with 0.7 kg of bromine-binding constituents, 1 kg of rosin, and 30 kg of asbestos are melted together (optionally with the addition of colorants) with 0.24 kg of calcium hydroxide.
