Chrom-Manganstahl.

Chromium-manganese steel. The well-known addition of stick material in chromium-iron alloys improves these because the coarse-grained structure becomes finer-grained and the alloys are therefore less brittle. It has also been proposed to alloy austenitic chromium-nickel steels with nitrogen and it has been found that tensile strength and yield strength can be increased. However, the ratio of yield point to tensile strength could not experience any particular increase.
The present invention now relates to a chromium-manganese steel which, with a content of 0.01-1.5% carbon, 10-35% manganese and 5-25% chromium, has a nitrogen content of 0.07-0,
7%.
Pure chromium-manganese steels, in particular if their structure consists of austenite in large quantities or entirely, have great toughness and ductility, but a relatively low ratio of yield point to tensile strength. The addition of nitrogen increases this ratio to an unexpected extent without a decrease in the toughness properties.
With the same alloy base of the elements carbon, manganese and chromium, the ratio of yield strength to tensile strength increases by about 50% when the first tenth of nitrogen is added; with further addition it can be increased by more than 80%. This beneficial effect of adding nitrogen can be explained by the fact that the nitrogen uptake is not hindered by manganese,
while in austenitic chrome-nickel steels it is reduced by the addition of nickel.
Nitrogen can be added by introducing nitrogen gas into the molten bath containing chromium or, for example, by using a nitrogen-rich h'erro-chromium alloy. The latter way allows greater uniformity in compliance with the intended nitrogen content. The castability, workability and heat treatment do not differ from those observed with nitrogen-free chromium-manganese steels.
In general, the nitrogen-containing chromium-manganese steels can already be used in the forged or rolled state. Cast fittings can also be produced and show just as advantageous mechanical properties.
It is particularly noteworthy that the tensile strength of steels alloyed with nitrogen according to the invention is only slightly increased compared to nitrogen-free steels or steels whose nitrogen content is less than 0.07%, while elongation and necking remain almost the same.
The nitrogen content therefore does not have any undesirable side effects, but enables the production of high-quality structural steels by increasing the yield strength by leaps and bounds. The properties of some of the steels produced, for example, are shown in the table, from which the quality-increasing influence of a nitrogen addition of 0.07% and above compared to one of less than 0,
07% can be clearly seen.

The machinability of all steels with a nitrogen content of 0.07% and above is easy and shows practically no difference compared to the nitrogen-free or low-nitrogen steels.
The steels with 0.07% nitrogen and above are consistently easy to weld; Sheet metal samples that were welded together resulted in a tear outside the weld seam.
As structural steels, the steels according to the invention are equivalent in their strength properties to high-quality tempered steels, but far exceed them in toughness and ductility. Welded constructions for lightweight construction can advantageously be made with the new steels because they contain a material that, in addition to high toughness, has high yield strength. The properties inherent in chromium-manganese steels within certain alloying limits are not negated or adversely affected by the addition of nitrogen. Such special properties are corrosion resistance, heat resistance, scale resistance and non-magnetic state.
They can be achieved in a known manner by appropriately measuring the alloying elements chromium-manganese and carbon. The high-carbon alloys, which have increased wear resistance, should also be mentioned here. The addition of nitrogen, however, opens up new areas of application as a result of the extraordinary improvement in the mechanical properties, or an increase in quality occurs which enables better and more economical use of the material.
Examples of how the new steels can be used are rustproof shafts, piston rods and similar parts in shipbuilding, turbine blades, hot steam valve parts, sheet metal in aircraft construction, non-magnetic cap rings, wear parts such as armor plates, sorting and sieve plates, helmet plates, etc.
The additional alloying elements already proposed for chromium-manganese steels to achieve special properties, such as nickel up to 4%, cobalt up to 6%, copper up to 6%, molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, tantalum, titanium,
Niobium each up to 1.5% can of course be present in the same way in the nitrogen-containing chromium-manganese steels.
