Austenitic filler material for welding non-austenitic steels and gray cast iron.
The production of welded joints when welding harder steel sheets has so far been limited. In the case of unalloyed steel, any increase in the carbon content to achieve greater strength due to the increasing embrittlement of the weld metal and the transition zone to the base material is not possible. Even with a carbon content of around 0.30%, the toughness values of the welded joints are so low that the use of such alloys no longer appears advisable. If alloy metals are added to the base material, such as chromium, manganese, silicon, etc., a somewhat higher strength in the welded joint can possibly be obtained, but a significant improvement cannot be achieved.
It is known to circumvent these difficulties by using austenitic steel alloys as filler material. The strength of the austenitic welded joint is set to a level such that the carbon cannot go higher than about 0-20%.
A further increase would make the transition zone too brittle. With such filler materials, strengths of up to about 60-65 kgm were achieved in the pure weld metal.
The invention overcomes the aforementioned difficulties and makes it possible to achieve strength values in a weld metal of over 80 kg / mm2 with the same or approximately the same toughness.
The strength of the welded joint will usually be somewhat higher than that of the pure weld metal. According to the invention, this success is achieved by adding 0.03 to 1% P to the weld metal or filler metal. The phosphorus can be wholly or partly in a known manner, either alloyed in the welding wire to be used as filler material or housed in flux or in sheaths of the filler wires in order to achieve the appropriate alloying of the weld metal.

Similar favorable results could be achieved with the other known austenitic filler materials. It was also found that when adding phosphorus to the alloy of the weld metal, the addition of the known formers of stable carbides, such as. B. titanium, tantalum, niobium, vanadium and molybdenum can be dispensed with, although there is actually the possibility of coordinating the effect of the phosphorus content of the weld metal with the already known effect of such alloys in order to achieve the best quality values.
According to previous knowledge, it was assumed that phosphorus causes embrittlement in the weld metal, as a result of which the addition of phosphorus has so far been rejected as harmful.
The subject of the above invention is the realization that these findings do not apply to austenitic filler materials, and that on the contrary, phosphorus has an extremely beneficial effect on these filler materials.
