Electric steam rectifier. The present invention relates to an electric current vapor rectifier of the initiating means type.
In rectifiers of the aforesaid kind, it has been customary to employ auxiliary valves ordinarily of the hot cathode type to send a starting current from the main anode of a rectifier valve to a starting electrode. cage. In practice, these auxiliary valves are called upon to deliver relatively short pulses of current of considerable intensity. It was unexpectedly found that these relatively high current pulses were detrimental to the auxiliary valves so that the replacement of the latter considerably increased the maintenance expense of these rectifiers.
The present invention is therefore directed to an electric current rectifier using auxiliary valves sufficiently robust to withstand the necessary current pulses, so as to reduce the maintenance costs of rectifiers of this type.
In the rectifier according to the invention, the usual auxiliary valves of the hot-electrode type hitherto employed are replaced by an electrical device with suitable values of dimensions and electrical capacity sufficiently large to produce the necessary starting current. These auxiliary valves can all be arranged or grouped in a single auxiliary rectifier. The starting electrodes are then energized by means of an auxiliary pulse transformer operating in dependence on the current in the auxiliary valves.
In addition, the auxiliary valves can be incorporated into the main rectifier in the form of auxiliary anodes. In this case, the auxiliary anode for any donated valve is inserted into another valve which is normally energized at the time the anode is. valve to be primed becomes positive. Thus, the auxiliary valve will be part of a tube which is energized when it is desired to energize the next valve. A gate drive may be added to the auxiliary valves to delay the excitation of the priming electrode until the anode of the main valve to be excited has become sufficiently positive to ensure the establishment of the ignition. 'arc of conversion in this one.
The variable-speed electric current rectifier according to the invention comprises a plurality of valves electrically connected for successive operation, each of said valves having a main anode, a cathode of vaporizable material and an ignition electrode in permanent contact. with said cathode. This rectifier is characterized in that it comprises means for causing intermittently a current in the starting electrode, means which comprise an auxiliary anode arranged in a separate discharge device and which is connected to the anode for the valve to be primed and a transformer for each valve, excited by the current flow to this auxiliary anode.
The appended drawing represents, schematically and by way of example, two embodiments of the object of the invention.
The fi-. 1 shows the diagram of the assembly of a rectifier constituting the first embodiment, and FIG. 2 shows the diagram of the assembly of another rectifier constituting the second embodiment and in which the auxiliary anodes are placed in the valves of the type with priming means.
The assembly shown in FIG. 1 comprises an alternating current circuit 1 and a direct current circuit 2, these two circuits being connected by means of a rectifier of the priming valve type 3 and of a transformer 4 intended to control the operation of the valves 5 of the rectifier 3. Each of the valves 5 of the rectifier 3 comprises a main anode 6, a cathode 7 and a starting electrode 8 constituted by a rod 9 of a conductive material and being provided with one end 10 of a semi-solid material. -conductor which is in permanent contact with the cathode 7 under all normal operating conditions.
With the anode 6 and the cathode 7 of the main rectifying valve 5 is connected in parallel an auxiliary valve 15 to produce an excitation current going to the starting electrode 8: This auxiliary valve 15 is connected in parallel. series with the primary winding 16 of a starting transformer 17, the secondary winding 18 of which is connected to the starting electrode 8 and to the cathode 7 of the corresponding main valve 5. Consequently, when a current flows through the auxiliary valve 15, the starting transformer 17 is energized and sends a current pulse to the starting electrode 7, which in turn creates a cathode spot in the starting valve 5 , so as donner, give rise to the establishment of an arc in it.
The auxiliary valves 15 for directing current to the starting electrodes 7 are preferably placed in a constantly energized device and, if desired, they can, as shown in. fig. 1, all be placed in a single auxiliary vapor arc rectifier .20. The auxiliary valves 15 are provided with a resistor 21 and a reactance 22 for controlling the passage of current through them, these elements 21 and 22 being established so as to cause the interruption of the auxiliary arc afterwards. establishing an arc in the main rectifier valve 5.
The auxiliary valves 15 are provided with control grids 25 to prevent a current from passing through these valves until the potential of the main anode 6 is sufficiently positive to ensure the establishment of the main arc when the spot. cathode is created by the starting electrode 8. In addition, this control grid can be used to delay the creation of the cathode spot until any desired time of the half-cy (positive or normal conduction sle, whereby the voltage and current flow of rectifier 3 can be adjusted.
Since the currents in the firing transformer 17 are uni-directional in character, the cores 26 of the transformers tend to saturate. This can be avoided by special construction of the transformer core or by combining two or more firing transformers 17 on the same core to thereby adjust the windings of the separate transformers 17 so that the successive excitation of the latter causes the reversal of the residual flux in the transformer core 26.
To start up the rectifier according to fig. 1, the auxiliary rectifier 20 is first primed. The voltage being applied to the transformer 4, a positive potential will be applied to at least one of the main anodes 6 of the rectifier 3, a positive potential which is also applied to the auxiliary valve 15 connected in parallel, and when the control gate 25 of this auxiliary valve is brought to the desired potential, an arc will be established in the latter and the current which passes through it and excites the breaking transformer 17 which will produce a cathode spot in the corresponding main rectifier valve 5.
After establishing the conversion arc in this valve 5, the reactance and resistance 21 connected in series with the auxiliary valve 15 determine a certain current flow in the latter and drop the voltage on the starting electrode. 8, so that after the termination of the normal conduction arc which shoots out in the valve 15, there will be no excitation until the main anode becomes positive again.
Control pulses can be sent to the control gates for the auxiliary valves 15 from any suitable source of electrical energy such as, for example, a transformer 30. If desired, this transformer 30 can be provided with control means. phase shift in the form, for example, of an induction regulator 31 whose primary winding 32 is connected to a suitable power source constituted here by the alternating current circuit 1, as the winding. secondary 33 of regulator 31 is connected to the primary winding of control transformer 30.
Overall shown in FIG. 2, each of the valves 35 is provided with an auxiliary starting electrode 36 connected, via the primary winding 37 of a starting transformer, to the node 6 of the following valve 35. Therefore, when the anode 6 in the next valve 35 becomes positive, the auxiliary anode 36 will cooperate with the cathode 7 of the previous valve 35 which is still in the energized state due to the rectified current therein. past. The current to this auxiliary anode 36 energizes the secondary winding of the starting transformer and gives rise to a current pulse at the starting electrode 8 which then produces a thodic AC spot and energizes the next valve 35.
If desired, control gates 41 can be added to the auxiliary anodes so that the cathode spot is not created before the main anode 6 has a positive potential large enough to allow establishment of an arc in the excited valve 35.
Any of the starting transformers can be provided with suitable means such as an auxiliary valve 39 and a switch 40 to produce an original current pulse at a starting electrode when the rectifier is turned on.
To start up the rectifier according to fig. 2, the switch 40 is brought to its closed position, after which, when the anode 6 connected to it becomes positive, the valve 30 allows the establishment of a current in the primary winding 37 of the transformer. initiation and sends a current to the ignition electrode 8 associated with the latter, so as to give rise to the formation of an arc in the valve 35, the switch 40 then being returned to its open position.
Once in service, the rectifier continues to operate automatically and, as each valve becomes positive in turn, the auxiliary anode associated with this valve and if killed in the previous valve becomes positive and sends a current to the starting means. of the valve considered.
