Description

Process for rolling profiles that should have different hardnesses and strengths at different points in their cross-section. The invention relates to a method for cold rolling profiles which should have different hardnesses and strengths at different locations in their cross section.

It is known that the strength of metals can be changed. They are reduced by annealing and increased by hardening. Hardening is done by heating and quenching. It can also be achieved by calibrating and rolling when cold.

Are known with the hardness designations "soft, semi-hard, hard, etc." marked sheet metal, strips and the like, which are obtained from one and the same raw material, which is usually hot-rolled before, and yet which have different strength and hardness within wide limits, depending on whether they are exposed to greater or lesser pressure during calibration or cold rolling were. For some purposes a "semi-hard" material is required, for others a "hard" one. If it is required that there are zones of different strength and hardness within a workpiece, then the previously known methods are not sufficient.

   An example may explain this:.

Double-T-shaped support rails for ring-less curtain sets, which are hung with a vertical web and attached to wall hooks at both ends, must have great strength against vertical stress because of the relatively large span. On the other hand, they should be able to be bent horizontally without tools in order to form dodges or bay arcs, so they must be soft in the horizontal direction. These two requirements are met when the vertical web of the rail is hard, but the horizontal flanges are soft.

This cannot be achieved with the known hardening processes, because case hardening cannot be applied to these small cross-sections. In addition, hardenable material is too expensive for simple requirements.

According to the invention, therefore, the procedure is such that the rolling stock in the cold rolling process is solidified by rolling at the points of its cross-section which should have a greater hardness. In this case, the rolling stock can be rolled at the points of its cross-section that should have a greater hardness under greater, empty pressure than at the other points of the cross-section.

To symbolize the process, reference should again be made to the double T-rail mentioned above, for example. The web is rolled by a pair of rollers with a horizontal axis under high pressure, while the flanges are simultaneously exposed to the ge lower pressures of a pair of rollers with a vertical axis.

The rolling under different pressures can also be carried out by different machines connected in series at the same time or by different or by the same machine at different times.
