Description

Steel alloy for raw performance files. Most files are made of carbon steel. Manufactured to a lesser extent from special alloy steels. The files made of special steel are called high-performance or rapid files. Chromium steels are generally used for this. Every now and then the files are also made from steels that contain a large amount of chromium and a smaller amount of tungsten as an additive. However, such high-performance files do not meet the requirements that are placed on trial files today, for example.

Since the hardness of the steel products to be tested is constantly increasing, files with increased hardness, grip and shape retention are also needed. Attempts were therefore made to manufacture files from the known high-speed steels. However, these files do not meet all requirements, either because they do not have a significantly higher hardness than the previously common files or because they are often unsatisfactory in terms of edge retention on softer materials due to the difficult hardening at temperatures of around 1300 C.

It was found that particularly hard, non-slip and sharp high-performance files are obtained from Cr-W steels, the chromium content of which is practically equal to the tungsten content, the chromium and tungsten content being at least 1% each. Such files attack smoothly ground surfaces of hardened steel parts with a Rockwell hardness of 66 well and for a long time. They therefore surpass all previously common files, for example as trial files for ball and roller bearing rings and the like.

  As an example for the new alloy is given: C = 1.15, Mn = 0.4, Si = 0.2, Cr = 1.5, W = 1.5%.

For some files, for example those with a very thin cross-section, it has proven advantageous to add at least 0.5% silicon or manganese to the new alloy.

The performance of the files made from the new steel alloy can also be increased by adding vanadium, cobalt, titanium, tantalum or zirconium, individually or together.
