Process for the production of polymeric vinyl alcohol. The DRP 450286 showed a way to obtain polyvinyl alcohol, which was previously unknown, by saponifying polyvinyl esters.
It has also become known to carry out the saponification in a mainly alcoholic solution in order to create a homogeneous reaction liquid. However, these were solutions in water-containing alcohols and the process was nothing more than saponification.
We have now found a new way of preparing polymeric vinyl alcohol based on the surprising phenomenon that the polyvinyl alcohol can be displaced from the association of its compounds by other alcohols in a practically anhydrous state and is released.
This reaction, which is known for monomeric alcohols during transesterification, is all the more surprising as, in view of the highly polymeric nature of polyvinyl alcohol and its compounds, the displacement of the polymeric vinyl alcohol from its compounds can even be carried out by monomeric alcohols.
This displacement of the polyvinyl alcohol from its compounds can be carried out by monohydric or polyhydric alcohols. It can in particular be catalyzed by saponification catalysts, such as, for example, acids, alkalis and bases, advantageously in smaller amounts. By choosing the type and the polymerisation stage of the starting material, it is possible to produce polyvinyl alcohol with different degrees of polymerisation, different properties and according to different viscosity and solubility in water.
The polymers of the esters, acetals and ethers of polyvinyl alcohol or partially esterified, acetalized or processed polyvinyl alcohol can be made available for the reaction as starting products. Among the esters, for example, the chloroacetate of polyvinyl alcohol can also be considered.
This new mode of representation has a number of advantages over the previously customary saponification processes, some of which are listed below. In the case of saponification, the acid component is partly converted into a relatively worthless salt, while in the present process the acid residue is essentially of higher quality; easily recoverable ester is obtained.
According to the present process, the polyvinyl alcohol can be obtained almost free of contamination by salts, while the polyvinyl alcohol obtained by saponification is contaminated by the resulting salt and, due to its strong adsorptive power, is difficult to free from the absorbed salts.
Finally, it has been shown that when using acidic catalysts with the same amounts, the reaction process is considerably faster than in the case of saponification and that, furthermore, both alkaline and acidic catalysts are significantly smaller amounts sufficient to achieve the at the same time as the saponification to complete the conversion. In addition to the esters and acetals, other compounds of polyvinyl alcohol, such as, for example, its ethers, can also be used for the reaction.
From the areas of application of polyvinyl alcohol, for example, the suitability as a protective colloid, adhesive, sizing agent, especially for rayon, with and without suitable additives and fillers for the manufacture of pressed articles and records, as an intermediate layer in the manufacture of safety glass, with or without suitable additives such as glycerine instead of gum, also for medical and pharmaceutical purposes, for the production of printing inks and the like.
For these areas of use, some of which have already been described, and similar areas of use, the high degree of purity of the raw product has a positive effect, as is naturally the case with further treatment with chemical agents, for example vulcanization or hardening by heating with or without the addition of formaldehyde or during manufacture of polyvinyl alcohol derivatives. Due to the purity of the product, the mechanical processing of the polyvinyl alcohol into plates, balls, threads, films, which are characterized by, among other things, extraordinary annoyance and elasticity, can be considerably simplified and made cheaper.
In general, the polyvinyl alcohol produced in this way exhibits special properties, for example when sizing textile fibers, which distinguish it characteristically from that obtained by saponification.
Example 1: If 100 g of a 20% suspension of high-polymer polyvinyl alcohol-formaldehyde acetal in absolute alcohol are mixed with 3 cm of concentrated sulfuric acid and boiled, ethyl formaldehyde acetal and polyvinyl alcohol are formed. Example, 2:
1.2 kg of 18% solution of high polymer vinyl acetate in absolute spirit are heated to the boiling point with 45% of 110% absolutely alcoholic hydrochloric acid (HCl content of 0.411 / o). The polyvinyl alcohol is quantitatively precipitated as an easily filterable precipitate.
Example 3: 1 kg of 20% solution of low polymer vinyl acetate in absolute spirit is added to 10 gr conc. H2S04 heated to the boil. The polyvinyl alcohol is a very fine, white powder quantitatively.
Example 100 g of low-polymer vinyl acetate in 400 g of absolute spirit are mixed with 2% of theory of a 10% absolute alcoholic potassium hydroxide solution. The conversion takes place in the cold, it leads within a few minutes at the boiling point to an easily filterable product. The yield of polyvinyl alcohol is theoretical.
Example 5: 100 g of polyvinyl butyrate as a 60% benzene solution were reacted with 3% of theory sodium ethylate after the addition of 330 g of absolute spirit.
Example 6: 20 g of high-polymer vinyl acetate are quantitatively in a 155% solution in a mixture of acetone and absolute spirit 3: 1 with 3% of the theory of absolute alcoholic sodium hydroxide solution at the boiling point with vigorous stirring in a short time implemented.
Example i 100 g of polymeric vinyl acetate in 400 g of absolute methanol are completely reacted with 2% of theory of methyl alcoholic KOH with stirring and heating within a few minutes.
Example 8: A 30% strength solution of low polymer polyvinyl acetate in acetone is mixed with so much anhydrous glycol that a solution with 20% solids is formed and with 3% of theory sodium ethylate at water bath temperature.
The reaction is slower than in alcohol or methanol; the polyvinyl alcohol precipitates out within 20 minutes. Example J:
5 grams of polyvinyl chloroacetate are dissolved in 10 grams of anhydrous acetone and mixed with 10 grams of absolute alcohol, the 3% dry NH3 (about 4% of theory)
contains in the pressure pipe at 120 ('converted in 11 / s hours. The polyvinyl alcohol precipitates out quantitatively.
If you choose an indifferent solvent as in Example 6, you can basically get by with little more than the equivalent amount of alcohol. It should be mentioned, among other things, that mixtures of alcohols can also be used.
