Description

Additional patent to main patent no. 169693. Process for the production of a chromium-containing azo dye. It has been found that the chromium compound of the azo dye is made from diazo-tated 1-amino-2-oxynaphthalene-4-sulfonic acid and 1-oxynaphthalene, which contains an atom of chromium on the chromable group of the dye molecule, by treatment with alkali Agents - can produce a new chromium-containing azo dye,

if this treatment takes place by boiling for several hours.

The chromium-containing azo dye obtained is a violet-black powder that is readily soluble in water and dyes wool from sulfuric acid or organic acid-sulfuric acid bath in navy blue shades of excellent fastness.

<I> Example: </I> In an iron kettle, at 60-70, 41 parts of caustic soda are dissolved in 80 parts of an aqueous chromium hydroxide paste containing 7.6 parts of Or $ 0s; the reaction mixture is then mixed with 15 parts of 1-oxynaphthalene and cooled to <B> 150 </B>. 27.3 parts of diazotized 1-aniino-2-oxynaphthalene-4-sulfonic acid are then added and the mixture is heated to 40 ° until the diazo compound has disappeared. It is then heated to <B> 70-76 '</B> and held at this temperature until the dye has completely converted into its chromium compound.

The chroming mixture is then diluted with 1000 parts of water and refluxed for 6-8 hours. The initially red-violet solution turns blue-violet. After cooling to 50-60, it is neutralized with 10% hydrochloric acid, then acidified with 3 parts of acetic acid and, after the insoluble constituents have been filtered off, evaporated to dryness in vacuo.

The same colorant is obtained if other alkaline agents, such as potassium hydroxide, soda, pottache, borax, magnesium oxide, ammonia or trialkali phosphate, are used instead of sodium hydroxide.

The treatment of the chromium compound with the alkaline agents must be carried out through prolonged perforation, open or under pressure, and through a suitable choice of the alkaline agent and the alkali concentration.
