A process for recording sounds and making copies of this recording. The object of the invention is a method for recording sounds and making copies of this recording, characterized in that the phonogrammic tracing is carried out by mechanical removal of an opaque layer which adheres to it. a transparent support; in that the said trace is controlled by reproducing the sounds by the photoelectric channel -directly with the aid of this trace; finally in that one proceeds to the establishment of copies of the original route thus checked.
A further subject of the invention is an apparatus for carrying out this method, characterized in that it comprises a support for an opaque mobile film on which the end of a vibrating tool rests on the side. direction of movement of the film, said support being pierced with a window to allow photoelectric reading of the pho nogram traced at. using a light source, optics and a sensitive photocell. The accompanying drawing illustrates, by way of example only, how the process may be carried out.

Figs. 20, 20a, 20b relate to a photographic reproduction device. Here is how, with reference to the figures: of the drawing, the process can be implemented: The transparent support 1 receives an opaque film 2 (fig. 1): arranged on one side of the image. On film 1 is traced in the manner indicated below a phonogram 3 ,. of constant width, by removing the opaque layer.
The plot '3 is obtained by moving the film in front of a tool, consisting: like a plane, which is animated: transverse vibrations dirty to. record. These vibrations are transmitted to the plane by any suitable known means.
Fig. 2 schematically represents a projection device for checking the pattern,: in which a light beam is emitted by a source 4, passes through a capacitor 5 which: directs it onto a slit 6 made in a room 7: behind which: moves film 8 made up as indicated. The luminous pin which passes through it is enlarged in a special optic 9 which then projects it onto a photoelectric cell 10.
A cover is arranged as shown in FIG. 3, at the output of the optical -dispositif 9, but could also be placed at any point: of the light ray; this cover limits the light beam from one side to a straight edge, while on the other side the beam is limited by the sinuous edge of the path.
If one does not want to use an eahe, one can modify the cathode of the photoelectric cell. Fig. 4, there is shown a cathode 11 of which only half (non-hatched part) is sensitive to light.
A variant may consist of: two emitting ca thodes 11 and II electrically isolated so as to be each arranged: in an independent circuit, these: two circuits being able to react on a common use circuit by a push-pull assembly, for example.
So that the phonogrammic groove is not projected on the screen with the cine matographic image, it is possible to cover this groove with a material permeable to invisible radiations and opaque to visible light.
In fig. 6, 7 and 8, a sinuous groove 3 of constant width is produced mechanically using: a sharp stylet 12 which vibrates transversely under the action of an amplified modulated current, brought by a -conduc - tor 13, to the electromagnets, not shown, of a fixed device 14, under which a film 1 to be recorded moves in the direction of the arrow f.
The electromagnetic device 14 is rigidly fixed to an arm or support 16 by means of a keyed axis 17, but which allows said device: to move vertically by means of a screw 18. This: arrangement tion allows you to adjust the position of the cutting edge of the stylus relative to the film. A stop screw 19 makes it possible to lock the assembly in the chosen adjustment position.
To produce a groove 20 with a rectilinear edge, a sharp stylus 2.1, offset with respect to the vibrating stylus 12, is fixed by means of a screw 22 in a socket 23 integral with the frame of the device 14 by screws 24. The groove 20 with rectilinear edges could be produced before the sinuous groove 3 or after, simultaneously as in the present case, or on a device independent of the recording device.
The following part of the description relates to FIGS. 9, 10 and 11.
A transparent support 1 receives a film of opaque material 2 arranged on one side of the image. A phonogram trace 3 of variable width is inscribed on the film. The edges 3a and 3b -of this plot are .symmetric with respect to a median line x-x. Line 3 is inscribed by removing the opaque layer 2, using two tools 30 and 31 which vibrate symmetrically with respect to to xx under the action of a modulated current amplified by installation.
In the embodiment shown in FIG. 10, the knives 30 and 31 overlap by an amount at least equal to the -double of the maximum oscillations.
Fig. 11 shows a variant in which the knives 30 and 31 are separated and vibrate transversely in the same plane, a non-vibrating intermediate knife 32 ensuring the removal of the central opaque part.
Fig. 12a shows how the cutting edge of the tracing tool appears under a microscope. Regardless of the precautions taken for its sharpening and polishing, this cutting edge always has roughness such as 41. If the cutting depth is adjusted so as not to cut into the substrate, the bottom of the groove will appear as fig. 12b, with traces 42, of opaque material adherent to the support 43.
If, on the contrary, the size is adjusted so as not to leave any opaque traces, the bottom of the groove will take on the shape indicated in fig. 12c, with indentations 44 obtained by removing the hard material from the support.
Between the surface opaque material 45 and the transparent support 43, which can be as hard and resistant as necessary, there is interposed a layer 46 of a transparent material, soft and not very resistant, the thickness of which may be small. It will nevertheless be at least equal to the error with which the position which is imposed on the cutting edge of the tool is vitally affected.
To allow, for the control, the sound reconstruction of the inscribed wave, it is possible either to remove, by planing, the opaque regions included between the axes 50 and 55, or to mask this same region by means of a screen placed on the course - mined rays which strike the electric photo cell.
It is also possible to shift the light trace of the photoelectric reading device.
Correct sound reproduction will be obtained by shifting the light trace - so that one of its ends comes, as indicated at 53 or 54, to be placed on the median axis 50, or, at least, in a point such that the trace 53 or 54 is never but cut by only one contours 48 or 49.
The same result will be obtained by adjusting the location of the inscription without shifting the light trace - so as to respect the arrangement indicated in 53 or 54.
Fig. 1à shows schematically a device -guiding the film and, on an exa managed scale, a device -de adjusting the depth of size. The film 55 passes over a curved corridor formed of a fixed part 5-6 and of a movable part 57 oscillating about an axis 58 parallel to the generatrices of the curvature of the corridor. The film is pressed on the corridor by a roller 59 and driven by a toothed cylinder 60 towards the receiving magazine.
The cutting depth adjustment is obtained by maintaining a constant height between the cutting edge of the tool and the outer face of the film. To this end, the part 57 of the corridor, movable around the axis 58, tends to rise under the effect of a counterweight 61., until it comes up against a perfectly polished guide 62, integral with the receiver. electro-mechanical 63 and the height of which can be precisely adjusted by means of the micrometric screw 65 and by more or less deforming the part 66 to which it is fixed.
Fig. 16a shows how the cutting edge of tool 64 should look relative to the surface of film 55. The size can be considered correct when obtaining a chip 68 of uniform thickness. This requires that the parallelism of the cutting edge - of the tool with the surface of the film is ob held - in a rigorous manner. For this purpose, the electromechanical receiver 63 will advantageously be supported by a support 69 with a certain degree of freedom around an axis 70 tangent to the surface of the film at the point of attack 71 and parallel to the direction of movement in this respect. point.
To enable multiple inscriptions to be obtained on the film as shown in fig. 1.7, the electromechanical receiver will receive a translational movement parallel to the transverse axis 76. For this purpose, a chariotage shown schematically at 77 is provided for the support 69. An endless screw, driven. by a handwheel, not shown in the figure, controls this turning, with stop notches corresponding to the various tracks 72, 73, 74, 75, etc.
So that the operator who performs the sound recording can realize, during work, the quality of the recording, the recording scroller represented in FIG. 18 comprises a photoelectric reading device, shown schematically in FIG. 18, and comprising a lamp 78, a microscope optic 79 and a light sensitive cell 80.
The light trace is formed at 81, on the surface of the film and the light rays access the cell through a slit 82 made transversely, along an axis such as 76, in the curved corridor 56 and as close as possible -from the tool attack point 71 and behind it in the direction of the movement. The operator will listen to the electroacoustic reproduction of the generated microphone currents. by cell 80.
In order to be able to read the various inscriptions 72, 73, etc., the device 78, 79, 80 may be carried by a frame, not shown in the figure, capable of receiving a translational movement parallel to the figure. axis 76. This traversing movement can be made linked to that of the electromechanical receiver, with three degrees of freedom corresponding to three different reading modes according to the trace given illuminated the locations 52, 53 or U -of fig. 14.
Fig. 19a shows the cross section of a groove with the asperities 86 resulting from the striations 83. These striations have the effect of generating parasitic noise reproduction. In order to remedy this, a thin layer of varnish having as exactly as possible the same refractive index as the notched transparent material can be spread in the bottom -du furrow.
Fig. 19b shows the roughness 86 embedded in a layer 87 of transparent varnish. The outer surface of this layer being smooth and the assembly 87, 88 being optically homogeneous, there is no longer any risk of light re-fraction through the transparent regions of the groove. In addition, the deposition of the layer 87 has the effect of protecting the edges 89 of the groove.
The electromechanical device which activates the plotter tool being affected by a not insignificant inertia, and the amplitudes of the curve inscribed on the film being, for the same intensity of telephone current actuating the receiver, inversely proportional to the square of frequency, it follows that the high frequencies of the voice which serve as the structure of the articulated language tend to be sacrificed in oscillography.
The means described below are intended to remedy this drawback.
It will be assumed that by means of the recorder provided with the improvements described above, the oscillographic groove 74 of FIG. 17 comprising the insertion of high frequency vibrations whose amplitude is insufficient.
It will also be assumed that, once again scrolling the film in the machine, this inscription 74 is read photoelectrically by means of the device of FIG. 18. The current generated by the cell 80 is amplified and sent to the electromechanical receiver 71, the location of which has been fixed, by means of the carriage 77 (fig. 16, so as to effect a new entry. in 72 for example.
There is already a first means of reinforcing, in this second inscription, the amplitude of the vibrations of high frequency, by using, between the cell 80 and the receiver, an amplifier whose amplification coefficient is proportional to the same power of the. frequency; n being greater than 2.
We have a second way. Instead of re-registering for the. ordinary speed of the talking film, a much slower speed is used.
Ways. -described below make it possible to obtain, by photographic printing, a positive copy at large amplitudes, starting from an original negative at low amplitudes.
An optical printer is used by projection: of the type of those which are industrially employed for the printing of copies of cinematographic films and of which FIG. 20 schematically gives the principle. An original negative film 90 is unrolled in a continuous movement from a debtor magazine 91 to a receiving magazine 92. It passes through a corridor 93 whose window is brightly lit by a lamp 94 fitted with a mirror and a lamp. a suitable capacitor. The positive blank film 95 which is to receive the print is disposed opposite to and unwinds parallel to the film 90, at a strictly equal speed.
Between the two windows 93 and 96 is arranged an objective 97 which forms on the blank film 95 a very clear image - of the inscriptions carried by the film 90.
The spherical objective 97 can be replaced by a cylindrical objective giving, in a plane perpendicular to the displacement of the films, a greater magnification than in the plane of the figure. It follows, for example, that a line, such as 9.8, inscribed on the film 90, will give rise on the film 95 to an image 99 in the form of a line of the same thickness or thickness. less with greater length. It can be seen that, by this means, it is possible to agran dir the amplitudes without altering the fineness of the inscriptions, that is to say without reducing the definition of the frequencies.
In a second variant, the objective 97 is a spherical objective of the same class, but having a stronger magnification and which is combined with a very thin slit arranged perpendicular to the plane of FIG. 20 and which allows access to the film 95 only a very constricted part of the light beam emerging from the lens.
Fig. 20b schematically accounts for the formation of the image. Let 100 be a curve inscribed on the original film 90 and presenting, for example, amplitudes of 1 (1o of a millimeter. The objective is given sufficient magnifying power to obtain on film 95 an image such as 101, magnified. for example 10 times, and consequently exhibiting amplitudes of one millimeter.
If the 9.5 film moved at a speed - ten times greater than that - of the wire 90, we would obtain on its surface, without the use of any other device, the curve 101. @If, on the contrary, the film 9.5 is only allowed to access a very narrow light beam taken, at the exit of the objective, through a slit 10'2 -two or three hundredths of a millimeter and -if, of on the other hand, the film 95 is forced to move at the same speed as the film 90, we get dra, on the latter,
printing a curve such as 103 which is an exact reproduction of the original curve 100 with - elongations enlarged in the ratio .50 - without any alteration of the other coordinate.
