Weitere Mengen Aldehyd greifen wahr scheinlich unterBildung vonMethylenbrücken vom Diphenylmethantypus (-R.
<I>Beispiel 2:</I> In \?79 Teile Anilin (3 Hol) werden bei 60 rasch 123 Teile 40 % iger Formaldehyd (11/-, Hol) eingetragen.
EMI0007.0023
Process for the production of moldings. The present invention is a process for the production of foreign bodies, according to which two- or polynuclear aromatic amine bases, the nuclei of which are linked directly or indirectly by substituted methylene groups so that fewer than two methylene groups are present for every two aromatic radicals and the at least contain as many amino groups as linked nuclei,
treated with aldehyde or aldehyde-releasing substances and, if necessary, subjected to a pre-curing at moderate temperatures, whereupon the condensation products obtained are deformed at higher temperatures with or without pressure into inaccessible, insoluble products.
It is known that the aromatic amines with formaldehyde give very different products, depending on whether the condensation takes place without the involvement of acid or in an acidic medium. The aldehyde primarily attacks the nitrogen, in the main search with formation of the azornethin group -N = CH ,. This primary condensation product, anhydroformaldehyde aniline, always forms the main product when aniline and formaldehyde are brought together neutrally or in the presence of insufficient amounts of acid.
Even when standing, the initially low-melting body changes into the less soluble polymeric anhydroformaldehyde aniline, which in turn changes into soluble, meltable resins through vigorous heat treatment, possibly in the presence of small amounts of acid and other additives:
According to Scheiber-Sendet, "Die Künstlichen Harze" (1929), page 98, resin is formed not through the formation of methylene bridges, but primarily through polymerization of the azomethine group. The resins are unsuitable for the production of molding compounds, but under certain circumstances they can be converted into usable, compressible resins with other aldehydes, presumably by a partial redistribution. Compare Patent No. 1591-6.8.
Completely differently structured condensation products arise in the presence of sufficient amounts of acid. This is where the anhydroformaldehyde aniline that is formed as an intermediate is stored, with the methylene group reaching into the core. This rearrangement takes place very quickly and completely in the presence of equimolar amounts of mineral acids, but it can also be brought about by organic acids. The condensation products obtained in acidic solution with 1 mol of formaldehyde are regarded as polymeric anhydro-p-amido-benzylalkobo1.
In the older literature (cf. Beilstein II, supplementary volume, 646) this is called an internal anhydride

formulated, but the more recent works by Staudinger talk about the chain-like structure of similar high-polymer compounds such as paraformalaldehyde, styrene and the like (see Ber. 53, 1073 [1920] and 59, 3019 [1926])
decided in favor of a formulation of the type R.NH.CHZ.R.NH.CHz.R.NH.CH2.R .... (R = aryl), which is also supported by the fact that both this polymer Anhydroamido.- benzyl alcohol (see DRP No. 98813), as well as the simple amidobenzylaniline (see DRP No. 75674) convert into thiazole compounds by treatment with sulfur, which can only be understood if the R. NH group is used in both cases. CH, R. . .
is based on.
These products, obtained in acidic solution from equimolar amounts of aniline and formaldehyde, are amorphous, non-hardening, meltable powders which, although not soluble in alcohol and benzene, are soluble in many other higher-boiling solvents.
Additional amounts of aldehyde probably intervene in these chains to form methylene bridges of the diphenylmethane type (-R. CHF .R-) and weld them together to form very stable molecules. These products are insoluble, infusible powders that are compressed under sufficient pressure at a higher temperature, mechanically and electrically completely - giving excellent pellets. The only disadvantage of these resins is their low flux and their insolubility in common solvents.
Obviously the connection of a large number of molecules by methylene bridges is of the -R-NH type. CH =. R- and -R. CH2. R- prerequisite for the development of the unusual mechanical properties of these resins.
In the patents No. 141223, No. 144226, No. 14.6009, No. 150936, No. 150937 and No. 15349.8 it was demonstrated that resins of the same type can be melted by post-treatment of the acid produced in the presence of larger amounts Resins with further amounts of aldehyde can be obtained, and that infusible resins of this group can still bind aldehyde without the need for acid for this condensation.
So while the resins produced in acidic solution with additional amounts of aldehyde readily provide resins of excellent strength and very good heat resistance, the azomethine resins can only cure under certain conditions to the extent that they can be used for the production of compacts . Although they have the great advantage that they are soluble in low-boiling solvents and can be used in this form to impregnate filling bodies, which results in a very homogeneous and intimate connection between the binder and the substrate.
By subsequent treatment with aldehydes and, if necessary, acids, they can now be hardened to such an extent that the mixtures can be pressed. However, the mechanical properties of these resins do not achieve the products made in acidic solution, which is probably due to the only partial rearrangement of the azomethine group in methylene bridges.
There are therefore three ways of producing compressible amine resins: 1. Condensation of primary aromatic amines in acidic solution with more than 1 mol of aldehyde. The resins provide very good pellets, but are only soluble in chlorohydrins.
2. Same condensation with only 1 mol of aldehyde and further treatment of the meltable resins with aldehydes and aldehyde-releasing agents. These resins also deliver excellent compacts, have better flow, the fusible starting products and some of the intermediate products are soluble in many technical solvents, but not in alcohol or benzene.
3. Condensation of formaldehyde and primary aromatic bases in equimolar amounts without or with insufficient amounts of acid, possibly conversion into meltable resins, and subsequent hardening by treatment with aldehydes, mostly in the presence of a little acid, at temperatures that are not too high. The starting materials are more soluble than those mentioned under 1 and 2, but the solubility is not yet ideal, and the products obtained are somewhere between the brittle, relatively low-melting azomethine resins and the tough amine resins under 1 and 2.
A readily hardening resin which is soluble in cheap, customary solvents and which can be used in the same way as phenolic resins for painting, soaking and impregnating shaped and unshaped substrates would be the most versatile given the superior electrical and mechanical properties of the amine resins technical application capable.
It has now been found that it is not the resin-like character of a starting material per se that is decisive for further hardening and thus for achieving good pellets, but rather the presence of methylene bridges in the form shown by experience to be particularly favorable, namely as -R. NH. CH ,. R- and -R. <B> CH, </B>. R - bond (R = aryl). The first type of bond is hereby referred to as indirect, the latter, where the nuclei are linked without mediating an amine group, as direct bond.
It has been shown that already oily amine bases built up only from two nuclei linked by such a methylene bond, and even more polynuclear, in an analogous manner on built up methylene bases, which contain less than 2 methylene groups for 2 amine residues, with further aldehyde amounts, namely expediently in such amounts that the total aldehyde is 1.2 to 1.5 mol and more on 1 aryl nucleus, can be hardened to excellent press mixtures,
which are close to the resins made in acidic solution and surpass those made from azomethine derivatives.
The following bases of the groups described may be mentioned as starting materials: aminobenzylaniline and its higher molecular weight homologues and analogs, as described, for example, in patent specification no. 161309, p-diaminodiphenylmethane and its derivatives; furthermore the derivatives which are formed in the above syntheses by replacing the formaldehyde with other aldehydes, such as furfural, acrolein, crotonaldehyde and the like.
In the latter case, compounds are obtained in which the nuclei are replaced by substituted methylene groups, for example, instead of unsubstituted methylene groups (CH,)
EMI0003.0053
and the like are linked. The bases do not need to be composed of aldehydes and amines; the aminobenzylaniline obtained from nitrobenzyl chloride and aniline and subsequent reduction can be used in the same way.
All of these bases always contain fewer than two methylene groups or substituted methylene groups for every two aromatic groups. The compounds mentioned do not need to be isolated in the pure state, but mixtures of the same, as they arise during the preparation, can be used with advantage. Mixtures of isolated bases can of course also be used.
The closer the aldehyde content approaches the equimolecular ratio, the more the resin-like character of the compounds emerges, while the binuclear compounds are mostly of an oily nature. Above about 0.85 mol of methylene, the solubility also tends to decrease and the overall behavior approaches that of the fusible, acidic, equimolecular amine resins.
The new compounds are soluble in most common solvents, especially in solvent mixtures, form salts with mineral acids and can be continued under a wide variety of conditions with other aldehydes and aldehyde-releasing agents, such as formaldehyde, furfural, polymethylolphenols, acrolein and the like condense, either starting directly with infusible, insoluble resins, or curable,
can still produce soluble intermediate compounds that pass into insoluble and infusible products at elevated temperature with or without pressure. In acidic solution, the bases can be condensed with formaldehyde in a similar way to aniline to form resins, which are largely similar to those known from patents No. 141223, No. 146009, No. 150936, No. 150937 and No. 153498, from which their character as Precursors of these resins should be proven.
Much more important, however, is their ability, in many cases, even in the presence of very small amounts of acids. even without acidic catalysts to condense into very useful, hardening resins that are insoluble after hardening. They result in much more heat-resistant and mechanically better pressed bodies than can be obtained from the non-methylene-containing amines and from azomethine resins under the same proportions. It is also possible to condense in various aldehydes in stages, which can greatly change the properties.
The new process is particularly suitable for the production of very homogeneous and well-flowing amine resin press mixtures with fillers such as wood flour, asbestos powder and the like, by impregnating the filler with the bases, which are usually slightly liquid when heated, or with concentrated solutions of the same and only then with Alde hyden is treated. The pressing time can be greatly reduced by pre-hardening at mild temperatures.
In many cases, the starting bases can even be made in the presence of the filler, which ensures even more intimate penetration of the filler with the resin. Often it is also possible to obtain soluble compounds of the starting bases with aldehydes, with which ge shaped substrates, such as webs of fabric and paper, can be coated and which can now be cured without further curing agents by pressing at elevated temperature.
The curing rate can be largely influenced by catalytic additives of an acidic or basic nature, depending on the character of the resin.
Example <I> Z: </I> 100 parts of amidobenzylaniline, prepared according to D. R. P. No. 87934, are mixed with 100 parts of furfural and the resulting thin solution is mixed with .200 parts of wood flour in the Werner Pfleiderer. The homogeneous mass is then heated in a closed vessel for 1.5 hours at <B> 50 '</B> and 4 hours at <B> 110' </B> and then dried in a vacuum.
By grinding, suitably with 2 parts of stearic acid, an almost black pressed powder is obtained which, when pressed at <B> 1060 </B>, turns into homogeneous pellets with very good heat resistance. <I> Example 2: </I> In 79 parts of aniline (3 Hol), 123 parts of 40% formaldehyde (11 / -, Hol) are quickly entered at 60. The mixture warms up to 70, the water of reaction separates and is separated off in the separating funnel.
The anhydroformaldehyde aniline formed remains dissolved and only separates out when standing for a long time. It is therefore advisable to process the solution immediately Cooling is held at <B> 70 '</B>. At 70 to 9.0, 52 parts of anhydroformaldehyde aniline are entered, which have been rubbed with a little alcohol for the purpose of better wettability. A clear solution ensues.
After one hour, the acid is neutralized with 50 parts of normal soda solution and the excess aniline is driven off with steam. A thick yellow oil remains, which solidifies on cooling without crystallizing. The molar ratio of methylene to aniline is 0.73: 1, so there is mainly a chain of 4 aniline residues linked by 3 methylene groups.
140 parts of this base are dissolved in 100 parts of a benzene-alcohol mixture and kneaded with 140 parts of wood flour. Then, with constant mixing, 3 parts of stearic acid and 70 parts of formaldehyde 40 are added and the mixture is heated in the closed mixing vessel for 1 hour. The mixture is subjected to a further 16 hours of heat treatment at <B> 60 '</B>, dried in vacuo and ground. By pressing at 155, homogeneous compacts of good mechanical quality are obtained. and electrical properties.
Example 3: 160 parts of o-toluidine (11/2 hol) are dissolved in 80 parts of glacial acetic acid and 160 parts (11/2 hol) anhydroformaldehyde aniline rubbed with alcohol are introduced cold. The solution is accelerated by adding another 50 parts of glacial acetic acid. One leaves. Stand overnight, neutralized with soda and distilled off the excess toluidine in a stream of steam.
The residue is a brownish, thick mass that becomes thin when heated and contains 0.76 hol of methylene to 1 hol of base, i.e. it should be composed of 3 hols of aniline, 1 hol of toluidine and 3 methylene bridges.
130 parts of this base are dissolved in 100 parts of benzene alcohol and mixed with 130 parts of wood flour. With constant kneading, 60 parts of 40% formaldehyde and 3 parts of glacial acetic acid are then added, and the thoroughly kneaded mass is heated to <B> 50 '</B> for 2 hours. It is then dried in vacuo, ground with 25 parts of furfural and 3 parts of zinc stearate and the powder is pre-cured at 60 for 10 hours. The dark powder can be processed into homogeneous, almost black pellets at 160.
<I> Example </I> .4: 100 parts of p-nitrobenzylaniline are dissolved in 600 parts of alcohol, 30 parts of calcium chloride are added and the mixture is boiled on a reflux condenser. 200 parts of zinc dust are then introduced in small portions, boiled until completely discolored and filtered while hot. To remove the calcium chloride, the solution is stirred for a long time with 30 parts of soda and a little water and filtered.
After the alcohol has been distilled off, the amidobenzylaniline remains as a somewhat dark, thick oil.
49.5 parts of this base (1/4 hol) are brought into solution with 1000 parts of 2% strength hydrochloric acid, filtered and, at <B> 30 '</B>, with vigorous stirring, with 30 parts (0.37 hol) of formaldehyde 40% offset. The temperature rises to 40 'and is held there for about 20 minutes, then neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution, filtered and washed. The voluminous, originally meltable powder obtained can be pressed at 145 to give clear pellets with very good mechanical and electrical properties.
<I> Example 5: </I> 100 parts of the base obtained according to Example 2 are dissolved in 300 parts of alcohol and 100 parts of glacial acetic acid and 250 parts of 40% formaldehyde are quickly poured in at 50% with thorough stirring. The initially formed precipitate soon turns into a soft resin. After 15 minutes, the resin is precipitated as completely as possible by adding water, separated from the mother liquor and dissolved in benzene-alcohol.
A web of fabric is then soaked with this solution and the latter is pre-cured for 15 hours at <B> 60 '</B>, then dried, cut into suitable pieces, layered and pressed. Homogeneous pressed bodies with very good properties are obtained.
Example <I> 6: </I> 650 parts of aniline chlorohydrate (5 mol) are dissolved in .2,000 parts of water and 328 parts (4 mol) of 40% formaldehyde are quickly added at 40 '. The temperature rises to about 6-0 '. It is now heated to <B> 80 '</B> and held at this temperature for about 1 hour, then neutralized with soda and any small amounts of aniline present are distilled off in a steam stream.
What remains is a resinous, oily residue in excellent yield, which is very similar to the base obtained in Example 2.
200 parts of this resin are dissolved in 400 parts of alcohol-benzene, and 30 parts of glacial acetic acid and 100 parts of crotonaldehyde are added with cooling. A vigorous reaction sets in with the deposition of a red resin. The mixture is refluxed to 60 to 80 for a few hours. After removing the solvent, the resin is triturated with soda solution, washed, dried and ground.
The resin shows very good flow and hardens when pressed to form dark, insoluble and originally meltable pellets with good properties.
Example 7: 150 parts of the thick oil base obtained according to Example 2 are dissolved in 100 parts of alcohol-benzene, 5 parts of glacial acetic acid are added and 15.0 parts of wood flour are kneaded. After 1/4 hour -80 parts of Aerolein are added while working through and mixed for a few hours at 50 in a closed apparatus.
It is then dried in vacuo and ground with .8 parts of paraformaldehyde and 3 parts of salicylic acid. A press powder is obtained which, with good flow in the press, hardens rapidly at <B> 150 '</B> and results in very homogeneous pressed articles with good properties.
<I> Example 8: </I> 100 parts of diamidodiphenylmethane are brought into solution with 1000 parts of water and 150 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid and, at 40 ', 112 parts of formaldehyde at 407 ° are introduced with thorough stirring. When heated to 150, a soft, gelatinous resin soon precipitates. The mixture is kept at 150 to 601 'for 1 / hour, neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution and the resulting, fusible and insoluble powder is thoroughly washed out.
At <B> 185 </B> to <B> 190 '</B> it can be pressed into tough pellets with very good mechanical and thermal properties.
Example 9: 198 parts of diamidodiphenylmethane (1 mol) are dissolved in 600 parts of alcohol and 16.4 parts of 40% formaldehyde (2 mol) are added with stirring. The mixture is heated for 1 / @ hour on the water bath, cooled, filtered and dried. The product is the analog of anhydroformaldehyde aniline. 100 parts of this product are then triturated with 250 parts of aniline and 120 parts of glacial acetic acid, a thick, yellow solution is formed which, after standing for several hours, is neutralized with soda and freed from excess aniline by evaporation.
You get 165 parts of a thick oil, roughly of the formula

should correspond. The new base is dissolved in benzene, 5 parts of salicylic acid are added, 170 parts of wood flour are kneaded and 140 parts of formaldehyde are mixed in. After thorough mixing, the mass is heated to <B> 60 '</B> in a closed vessel for 20 hours and then dried in vacuo. The press powder shows good flow, and the pressings obtained in the usual way show good mechanical and electrical properties.
Example 10: 108 parts of m-phenylenediamine (1 mol) are refluxed for 10 hours with 100 parts of alcohol and 114 parts of benzyl chloride (0.9 mol). May i. then with soda solution and shakes out with benzene. The monobenzylphenylenediamine is obtained as a dark 01. 100 parts of this base are dissolved in 100 parts of alcohol-benzene, 3 parts of glacial acetic acid are added and 100 parts of wood flour are intimately mixed.
Then 60 parts of formaldehyde 40% i (, are added in the mixer and kneaded for 5 hours in a closed mixer at <B> 50 '</B>. Drying in vacuo, grinding and compression in the usual way. Homogeneous pressed bodies of good properties.
<I> Example 11: </I> 133 parts according to Schiff, Annalen 220 (1880), p.355, made "Furfurol color base" from the probable formula

corresponding to 1/2 mole, are dissolved in 130 parts of benzene alcohol and kneaded with 230 parts of wood flour. A solution of 5 parts of glacial acetic acid in 100 parts of furfural (slightly more than 1 mol) is then added and mixing is continued until the filler is homogeneously saturated.
The mass is then, suitably in a closed vessel, pre-hardened for 20 hours at <B> 60 '</B> and 6 hours at <B> 80' </B> and then dried in vacuo. By grinding, a black powder is obtained which, with a good flow at 165, can be quickly pressed into shiny black, very heat-resistant bodies. Example 12: 93 parts of aniline (1 mol) are dissolved in 100 parts of alcohol and 56 parts of acrolin (1 mol) are added while cooling with ice. The components react with a red color and strong heat tint.
To end the reaction, the mixture is heated in the reflux condenser for 2 hours, during which the solution becomes cloudy and a thick oil separates out. The anhydro product formed in the first phase of aniline and acrolein can now be added to aniline in the same way as anhydroformaldehyde aniline by adding 93 parts of aniline to the above solution and adding 20 parts of concentrated hydrochloric acid at <B> 60 '</B>. The temperature rises to <B> 90 '. </B> After one hour, it is neutralized with soda, alcohol and aniline are driven off with steam, and the remaining resin is washed and dried.
The composition corresponds to the formula

100 parts of this base are then dissolved in alcohol-benzene and mixed with 100 parts of wood flour, then j82 parts of 40% formaldehyde and 3 parts of salicylic acid are added and thoroughly kneaded. After 24 hours of heat treatment at <B> 60 '</B> in a closed vessel, the mass is dried and ground. At 165 the powder can be pressed into very good pellets.
