Process for the production of a plastic and shock-resistant pentaerythritol tetranitrate mixture of the highest explosiveness. Pentaerythritol granitrate is an explosive substance of good stability, high density, very high detonation speed and strong energy development during detonation. It would be excellently suited as a military explosive for filling projectiles, if it did not have the great disadvantage that it is too sensitive to shock and impact. As a result, it presents difficulties in pressing and is also not bulletproof.
On the basis of this knowledge, attempts were made in various ways to avoid this evil situation. Thus, according to D. R. P. No. 500 844, the pentaerythritol tetranitrate is melted together with aromatic nitro compounds, for example trinitrotoluene, whereby the pentaerythritol tetranitrate is phlegmatized and bulletproof explosive charges are obtained. The D. R. P.
No. 500 272 provides for the pentaerythritol tetranitrate to be mixed with liquid aliphatic nitric acid esters such as nitroglycerin or glycol dinitrate; According to the inventor, this leads to the most energetic and fastest detonating combination. But this does not reduce the sensitivity to a hammer to such an extent that one could speak of sufficient shot safety.
For example, it detonates under the 2 kg drop hammer

<SEP> nitrous explosives, <SEP> p. <SEP> 302 It was now. found that one can reduce the sensitivity of the pentaerythritol tetranitrate by adding nitroethylene chlorohydrin so that one can now speak of an absolute handling and shot safety.
It is expedient to mix the nitroethylene chlorohydrin with nitroglycerin, nitroglycol or dinitromonochlorohydrin and gelatinize it together with the pentaerythritol tetranitrate, expediently with the addition of collodion wool.

The net bulging of this mixture in the lead block was found to be 460 cm @, in agreement with the bulging that results from a mixture without the addition of nitroethylene chlorohydrin. The product is intended to be used in particular as a bullet and detonation cord filling.
