Method and machine for the production of objects of a certain weight. The invention relates to a process for the production of objects, mainly engine pistons, of a certain weight and a machine for performing the process.
It is known in multi-cylinder piston machines to produce pistons that work in opposite directions and have the same weight, so that their inertia forces are balanced.
Two methods of making pistons of like weight are common in automotive engine manufacture. The older method consists in working on the outside of the skirt of the piston, then weighing the piston and then sorting the piston into groups of approximately the same weight. All pistons for an engine are then removed from one of these groups. At the low speed of the earlier engines, this was sufficient, and this process of sorting pistons into groups was used very extensively. A disadvantage arises when a single piston in the engine needs to be replaced.
The replacement station cannot keep a complete stock of all piston groups of one piston size, usually only a few pieces of one piston size are kept in stock. Most previous engines are therefore not balanced when a new piston is used with an old group.
At today's high speeds of the engines, the crankshaft counterbalance of the pistons is applied in an expanded mass, where the pistons must be machined to a certain weight in order to function properly with the counterweights.
The modern pistons are cast in permanent molds and machined on the outside everywhere. Machining the interior of the piston is impossible because of the piston journal bearings and reinforcing ribs, so that any change in the core shapes causes a change in the weight of the piston. The core molds used to manufacture the pistons are usually composed of five pieces which are held together in a very complicated way. The wear and tear on these molds is considerable, so the pistons cast when the molds are new weigh considerably less than the pistons cast when the molds have been in use for a long time. The life of the molds depends directly on the tolerance in the weight of the pistons.
According to the usual procedure, the piston is first machined on the outside, then weighed, then an amount of metal estimated by the worker as being overweight is worked off from the inside of the piston skirt, then the piston is weighed again, another amount of metal is worked off, etc., until the Piston finally had the right weight. Only small amounts of metal may be removed after each weighing so that the piston does not become underweight. As he can see, this procedure is costly and depends on the skill of the worker.
According to another method for the manufacture of pistons of a certain weight, the piston is pressed onto the balance beam of a balance and then part of the piston jacket is processed until the balance beam reaches a certain position and the machine stops. Since a rigid support of the piston is impossible, only thin chips can be turned off to prevent the workpiece from rattling. Furthermore, there is a risk of damage to the balance beam by the turning tool, so that it is almost impossible to achieve precise results with machines of this type.
According to the method according to the invention for the production of objects of the same weight, the objects with excess weight are produced and weighed, and then material is successively removed from them, this process being monitored and terminated by the weight of the material removed when this Ge weight reaches the preponderance of the object in question.
The machine for exercising the method according to the invention removes the excess weight by means of a tool in chips and has a funnel for this under the clamping point of the work piece, which is suspended by means of a linkage on a balance beam of a balance, which switches the tool on electrically .
As an embodiment of the invention, the drawing illustrates a machine for producing engine pistons of equal weight. Based on the same, the method according to the invention is explained below, for example.
Figures 1 and 2 are an elevation and a side view; Figure 3 is a schematic of the moving parts of the machine; Fig. 4 is a section through a piston chuck and a turning steel shaft, and Fig. 5 is a section through a turning steel release device. The housing 10 of the machine, which consists of a rectangular cast box, has doors 11.
An electrometer 1.5 housed below in the housing 10 drives a transverse shaft 16 by means of a belt 17, on which a 2: 1 worm sits, which engages in a worm gear 2-2 on a vertical shaft 23. The shaft 28 carries a worm 24 at the top, which engages in a worm wheel 25. The worm wheel 25 sits on one end of a sleeve 216 which is rotatable on the central part of a transverse shaft 2 7 bar.
At the other end of the sleeve 26, one part 72 of a coupling is slidable but secured against rotation by means of a tongue and groove 71, which can engage with teeth 84 in teeth 83 of the coupling part -82 fixed on the shaft .2,7. The worm gears 21, 22 and 24, 2.5 cause a strong reduction in speed, so that the sleeve 2.6 turns very slowly.
A sleeve 2.9 is slidably mounted in a bearing 2.8 inclined in the housing 10. This sleeve has a rack-like transverse toothing in which a toothed piston 31 on the shaft 2,7 engages, so that when the shaft 27 rotates, the sleeve 29 is displaced in the bearing 2,8. In the sleeve 29, the turning steel shaft 20 with the turning steel 52 by means of two ball bearings 32 and 33 ge superimposed, which are attached to the shaft between a shoulder 3.4 and two nuts 36 and held apart by a spacer tube 3.5, so that when a displacement environment Sleeve 29 in the bearing 2.8, the shaft 20 is taken along.
The lower part of the shaft 20 engages with grooves and springs 37 in the hub 38 of the bevel gear 19, which is rotatably supported by two ball bearings 39 and 40 in the housing 10 of the machine. The bevel gear J'9 is permanently in engagement with the bevel gear 18 on the shaft 16, so that the shaft 20 is driven by the shaft 16 at approximately the same speed.
A mounted on the housing 10 Sup port 41 has a with the bearing 2.8 in the housing in alignment with a bore 42 with a clamping sleeve 43, in which the engine piston 47 to be machined is pushed by means of a lever 46.
The lever 46 is in the support 41 on the pin. 45 rotatably mounted. It is pressed onto the piston 47 by a non-circular disc 50 on a shaft 49 mounted in the sup port, which can be rotated by means of a crank 51, and lifted off by a counterweight 48 on the arm 44 of the lever when the piston 47 is replaced shall be. At the bottom of the support 41 a collecting funnel 53 is attached which, together with a deflector plate 54, guides the chips processed by the piston through the turning tool 52 into a weighing funnel 55 arranged under the collecting funnel 53.
When a valve 59 in the funnel 55 is opened, the chips fall through the funnel opening 58 onto a chute 62 which guides them into a container, not shown. The valve 59 is seated on a valve rod 60 which is displaceable in a support 61 fastened at the front of the housing 10 and is supported with a shoe 63 on the lever arm 64 of a shaft 65 mounted in the support 61.
A second lever arm 66 of the shaft 6, 5, directed to the opposite side, carries a vertical rod 67, on which a cam 68 on the shaft 49 acts in such a way that when the crank 51 is rotated for the purpose of release of the piston 47, the rod 67 is pushed down and the valve 59 is opened.
The funnel 5, 5 is held by a lever 56, which is mounted in the housing 10 by means of a hinge 57 and connected to the arm 70 of the balance beam 13 by a balance 12 on the housing 10 by a rod 69. The balance beam 13 carries a barrel weight 14 and a U-shaped ge bent wire, the legs of which dip when Sin ken of the barrel weight 14 in two cups 89 which, what the drawing does not show, are filled with mercury. This establishes a connection in a circuit, from the power source, not shown, via line 91 to mercury bowls 89 and via line 92, winding 78 of an electromagnet 77, line 94, via a manual switch 95 and line 96 to Stromqualle goes back.
The armature 7 6 of the electric magnet is attracted to the core 79 when this current circuit is closed and closes the clutch 72 and 82 by means of the lever 75, which is wedged on the shaft 80 mounted in the housing 10 and by means of a fork 74 in an annular groove 73 of the Coupling part 72 engages. A spring 85 is placed between the two coupling parts 72, 8? compressed. A hand lever 81 which actuates the switch 95 is fastened on the shaft 80 outside the housing 10.
A cable 87, which carries a weight 88, is fastened in a channel 8, 6 on the coupling part 8, 2. This weight tends to rotate the shaft 27 so that the sleeve 229 and the turning steel shaft 20 are returned to their lowest position. An arm 97 (FIG. 2) seated outside the housing 10 on the shaft 27 interacts with an adjustable stop 9, 8 on the housing 10 so that the lower position of the turning steel shaft 20 can be adjusted.
The operation of the machine described is as follows: First, the piston 47 is clamped in the machine and the weight 14 is adjusted accordingly to the excess weight of the piston 47 on the balance beam 13. Last. The latter then falls into its lower position, so that the U-shaped wire 90 establishes a connection between the wires 91 and 92 in the circuit. The clutch 72, 82 is then engaged by means of the hand lever 81 and the switch 9.5 is also closed. As a result, the shaft 27 is slowly rotated and the circuit is closed, so that the current excites the electromagnet 77.
The armature 76 is thereby attracted so that the worker can release the lever 81 without the clutch 72, 82 being disengaged by the spring 8.5.
During the slow rotation of the shaft 27, the toothed piston 81 pushes the sleeve 2, 9 upwards, so that the turning tool 52 processes part of the inside of the piston guide. The chips produced in this way fall into the funnel 55 until enough chips have accumulated in it to balance the weight 14 on the balance beam. Then this lifts the running weight 14, and the U-shaped wire 90 interrupts the circuit between the wires 91 and 92, whereby the electromagnet 77 is de-energized. The spring 85 then releases the coupling part 72 from the coupling part 8-2, so that the latter is no longer driven, causing the sleeve 29 and the twisted steel shaft to return to their lowest position on the weight 38.
The spring 8-5 also returns the hand lever 81 to its initial position, so that the switch 95 is turned off. Even if the balance beam 13 falls back into its normal position, the circuit remains interrupted by the switch 95. The worker then releases the lever 46 by means of the crank 51 from the piston 47, the valve 59 in the funnel 55 being opened at the same time, so that the chips fall from this into the chute -62. Here, another piston is clamped by means of the crank 51, the valve 59 being closed.
The machine described has some advantages. As such, the rigid clamping of the piston should be mentioned in particular, which enables thick chips to be processed by the turning tool 52 and the piston to be compensated for in a short time. Furthermore, the machine is automatic in the sense that the worker only has to clamp the piston in the machine and set the barrel weight on the scales according to his excess weight, while the machine stops automatically when the desired weight of the piston is reached.
