Process for the preparation of di- (p-tolyl) -phenosafranine. The preparation of arylated saffronites by synthesis is known.
So far, however, it has not been possible to produce arylated safranines by the known arylation process, fusing with arylamines and their chlorohydrates from the corresponding saffranines. Such attempts lead, depending on the choice of the saffron to be arylated, either to indulin-like bodies or to cloudy,
unsightly and undefinable decomposition products of saffron.
A process of general applicability was found to arylate safranines, for example safranines alkylated on an amino group of the type:
EMI0001.0030
in arylalkylsafranines, or phenosafranines of the type
EMI0001.0033
to convert into the corresponding diarylsafranine. The reaction is easy.
if, instead of starting from the relevant dyes, the corresponding leuco compounds are arylated and, if necessary, oxidized to form the dyes. It is not necessary to isolate the leuco compounds.
The safranine to be arylated is dissolved in an excess of the arylation agent, or in another suitable solvent, reduced to the leuco body and arylated at the worst arylation temperature. After the reaction has ended, the reducing agent is separated
if the solution of the arylated leuco body is oxidized to the dye by means of air, and this is isolated by removing the solvent according to known methods.
By varying the components, homologues and substitution products arylated on one and both sides can easily be obtained, including a number of previously unknown dyes, such as diarylphenosafranines substituted in the aryl nuclei, including the diaminodiarylphenosafra formed when diamines are used as arylation agents - nine.
A not insignificant advantage for the technical side of the process is that the reduction of the dye to the leuco compound and the arylation can be carried out in a single effort.
The dyes obtained in the manner described pull with beautiful; violet blue to cornflower blue tones on silk and tannin cotton and have remarkable fastness properties. In concentrated sulfuric acid, in contrast to indulins, they do not dissolve with blue, but with the green color characteristic of saffranines, which when thinned turns blue with water. By treatment with sulphurizing agents, acidic dyes of a similar shade are obtained, which affect silk and wool.
The subject of the present main patent is a Terfahren for the representation of di- (p-tolyl) -phenosafra-nins of the following constitution

which is characterized in that leukophenosafranin is reacted with p-toluidine in the heat.
Example: - _- 10 parts by weight of phenosafranine are dissolved in 75 parts by weight of p-toluidine at a water bath temperature. 5 parts by weight of p-toluidine chlorohydrate are added to the solution, the temperature is brought to 140 ° C., and then 10 parts by weight of zinc dust are sprinkled in.
The red color of the solution turns yellow, the leuco compound of phenosafranin is formed. It is now heated in the reflux condenser to the boiling point of the toluidine; until a sample of the mixture in air does not change its color further towards blue.
Already after about an hour and a half the blue formation is at its peak, it is cooled down, mixed with 50 to 100 parts by weight of alcohol, and the excess zinc dust and some of the p-tolluidyl chloride that has separated out are filtered off. off, the solution, which turns blue during the filtration, is completely oxidized by the introduction of air and, after the alcohol has been distilled off, the dye is precipitated by pouring into a mixture of 500 parts of water and 100 parts of 30% hydrochloric acid.
The dye is filtered off and dried at 70 to 80.degree. There are 12 to 14 parts by weight of ditolyl phenosafranine of the following formula:

receive. The new product dissolves in concentrated sulfuric acid with a green color, which turns blue when diluted with water.
