Process for the production of an asphalt-containing road building material. The usual production of asphalt concrete and sand asphalt takes place in such a way that a bitumen-free mineral mix consisting of stone chippings or. a stone chippings sand mixture or sand alone is dried in drying drums, heated and then fed into a mixer, where it is mixed with stone dust (= filler) and liquefied asphalt. The entire mixing time of the minerals with the asphalt only takes a few minutes. In order to obtain good asphalt concrete and sand asphalt, it is necessary, as is known, that the composition should be done according to certain rules.
The mineral framework must be composed according to the so-called cavity minimum principle, i.e. the cavity remaining when the minerals are compressed must come as close as possible to a minimum that can be achieved with the building materials concerned. A high proportion of filler is particularly important here, which means the components that have a diameter of less than 0.074 mm. According to Arst's experience, the filler can be added in the mixing box and must not be sent through the drying drum together with the other minerals. This brings with it various difficulties.
Once it consumes part of the heat in the mixer, so that the amount that can be added is limited, because neither the other minerals nor the bitumen can be heated above a certain limit without suffering damage, and because on the other hand the asphalt concrete and the sand asphalt must be warm over <B> 150 '</B> C when paving.
Another difficulty is that the process of mixing asphalt with mineral parts must be completed in a very short time. Even if good machines are available for this, it must be doubted that the finest parts are always mixed evenly with the asphalt in such a short time. It is clear from the above that you always have to have dry and fresh filler on hand on the mixing plants that does not tend to clump together. The addition of the filler to the mineral mass in the mixing box is associated with very annoying and harmful dust generation.
As experiments have surprisingly shown, the deficiencies described above can be circumvented by the following new method: We have natural asphalt limestone available in our own country, which is an extremely intimate mixture of asphalt and mineral.
If you mix crushed minerals of the highest size, such as stone chippings or a grit-sand mixture or sand alone, natural asphalt limestone powder instead of another filler and add asphalt to the mixture, you get a thorough mixing in one Mixer a good asphalt-containing road building material with the character of asphalt concrete and sand asphalt. Various things should be observed with regard to the mixing processes.
Melting pots with mixing or stirring devices, such as those used for the production of mastic asphalt, are unsuitable for this purpose. It is possible to use wing mixers and all mixing devices that are used for the production of rolled asphalt, tar concrete or tar macadam, which are not heated and in which the mixing process is completed in a short time, for example in a few minutes. The natural asphalt limestone powder advantageously enters the mixer in a heated state.
It is conveniently passed through a drying drum in a mixture with the other minerals, where it is dried and heated together and then placed in the mixer. This method of working ensures that the natural asphalt limestone powder is mixed well with the other minerals.
When heated, the natural asphalt limestone powder breaks down, the asphalt comes to the surface, certain parts even become volatile and at the same time cover the surface of the other mineral parts with natural asphalt limestone powder and prepare particularly good adhesion to the binding agent to be added in the mixing box. You can also heat and dry both the natural asphalt limestone powder and the mineral substance separately, after which they are brought together while they are still warm. The process offers many advantages 1. A completely even mixture is achieved.
2. The filler is saved and replaced by asphalt limestone powder, which is naturally evenly mixed with asphalt.
3. Since the natural asphalt limestone powder is partially dried and heated before the asphalt additive, it can be delivered loosely to the construction site and does not need to be protected from moisture, as was necessary with the stone powder previously used as a filler.
4. The addition of natural asphalt limestone powder is not subject to the quantitative restriction like the addition of filler in the previously usual process. A wide variety of compositions can be used. It is, for example, possible to manufacture an asphalt concrete that is completely equal to today's mastic asphalt in terms of its impermeability using our new process, but which does not have the deficiency of mastic asphalt, which is that the mastic asphalt must contain a few percent more bitumen than the cavities of its mineral mass amount to be flowable.
You can also use our new process to produce a fine-grained sand asphalt that is on par with today's rammed asphalt in terms of durability, but should not be confused with the sand asphalt that has been customary up to now, because it could not be produced with such a high content of the finest mineral parts and because these finest mineral parts , the filler, were not as evenly penetrated by asphalt as is the case with natural asphalt limestone powder, which replaces the filler in the present process.
<I> Example: </I> 40 kg natural asphalt limestone powder are mixed with 30 kg basalt chippings of the grain size 3 / o <B> mm </B> and 25 kg basalt chippings o / 10 mm and heated together in the drying drum to 160 ° and then fed into the mixer, where 5 kg of asphalt is also added at a temperature of 160 o. The mass is mixed for two minutes.
