Shock absorber device for suspension of chassis for cars, vans, etc. The object of the present invention is a shock-absorbing device for motor vehicles, vans, etc., the frame of which, intended to be fixed to the chassis of a vehicle, comprises a winding drum to which is fixed one of the ends of a braking tape, and energy dissipating elements comprising flexible blades over which the said tape passes, the other end of which is fixed to the axle, the whole established so as to operate, when the chassis is 'Away from the axle, a braking of its movement, braking due, in part at least, to the friction of the tape on the flexible blades of the dissipating elements.
Figs. 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings show, by way of example, one embodiment of the object of the invention, FIG. 1 being a front view and FIG. 2 a section along L - L of FIG. 1.
The shock-absorbing device shown com carries a frame 1 intended to be fixed to the chassis of an automobile, for example approximately above the rear axle, by means of a bolt 2 passing through a hole made. through said frame; in order to prevent the frame from rotating, it is provided with a stopper 1 ', intended to press under the inner face of the frame.
On the frame 1 is fixed an axis 3 around which can turn a winding drum 4 on a part of the periphery of which is wound a braking tape 5, the latter being fixed by one of its ends on said drum. Urr spring 6, placed in a concentric recess of the drum, and tending to bring the latter constantly in the position of winding the tape, is fixed, by evening mobile end 6 ', to said drum, while its other end 6 "takes bearing on a support 7; the latter is connected with the end of the axis 3, and, on the other hand, rests on two studs 8, 8 ', on which it is fixed by means of screws 9, 9', passing through said studs, and screwed into the frame 1.
Between the pads 8, 8 'are clamped the ends of flexible blades 10, having a curved end 10', the whole forming a first braking element. Above the latter is a second element whose blades 11 rest on a support 12, fixed to the frame, and are also curved at the ends; this element is intended to dampen the sudden tensions exerted on the tape 5.
The tape 5 passes successively from the drum 4 over the curved end 10 'of the blades of the first element, then over the blades of the second element, and finally is fixed to a part of the rear axle, preferably to the axle 13, shown schematically, by means of rivets or bolts, so as to make the tape easily removable for replacement.
The tape 4 is provided with a colored sign 14, preferably red, serving to indicate, when mounting the damping device on the automobile, that the tape must be pulled until said sign 14 is at the bottom. height of a reference point 15 located on the frame 1, before being fixed definitively on the axle 13. In this position, the tape 5 is unwound half on the drum 4, the spring 6 of which is thus tensioned, while the curved part 10 'of the first element is also fully tensioned.
The operation of the damping device is as follows: when the automobile is subjected to a slight jolting, having the effect of bringing the chassis closer to the rear axle, the braking tape 5, released, allows the end 10 'of the first blades to relax so as to keep said tape uniform tension; as soon as the chassis rises again, urged in this by the suspension springs on which it rests, the tape 5 slides over the blades of the second station, again stretching the part 10 'of the first element, the resistance of which to the bending thus prevents the sudden relaxation of the suspension springs, called the racket stroke. During these small movements of the first station, the drum 4 remains virtually stationary.
When the automobile is subjected to strong jolts, that is to say when the chassis and the rear axle come together to a great extent, the part 10 'of the first element reaches the end of its travel before the tape runs out. is tense; it is then that the tain- end 4 comes into action and, biased by the spring 6, winds the ribbon 5, released.
When the frame, urged by the suspension springs which support it, rises, it bends the blades 10 'of the first element and unwinds the drum 4, driving the tape around the part 10', as well as on the blades of the second element, which causes a considerable dissipation of energy, due to the friction of said ribbon on the flexible wools, as well as to the friction of said blades on each other - the frame thus braked in its upward movement, gradually resumes its normal position.
In the two cases mentioned above, the second damping element tends to damp the energy of the brief pulses to which the strip 5 is subjected.
