Transformer for supplying vacuum tube lamps. The invention relates to a transformer for supplying vacuum tube lamps, that is to say those in which a column of more or less diluted gas, for example neon, is used when an electric current passes through to light outside. It is regularly a question of entinehmen the energy for the lamp from a conventional AC connection of around 110 volts and 60 heart rate and to bring this energy to the relatively high voltage required to excite such a lamp.
In the transformer according to the invention, an arrangement is provided to compensate for the known negative resistance characteristic of the lamp, this addition being the same as the known arrangements, but requiring a smaller number of parts and being more economical to manufacture and install.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated, for example, in the drawing, in which a vacuum tube arrangement using a transformer according to the invention is shown in a perspective view.
It is known that vacuum carrot lamps of the type described have a so-called negative resistance characteristic, that is, the state in which the lamps are operated as usual is normally unstable, which is in the nature of a glow discharge and, as is known, leads to it see m an arc transformed. If the necessary voltages are applied to the ends of an identical lamp, the current will accordingly increase somewhat. The increase in the current causes a decreasing voltage drop across the lamp, which in turn causes a larger current.
The result is the effect that the resistance decreases so strongly that an arc is created and can directly short-circuit the machine that is pumping the lamp.
For this reason, a resistor is usually used in the circuit in order to limit the current flow to the value which produces the best perfect effect in the operation of the lamp.
These resistors were previously BEZW as resistance units. Blocks or turns placed anywhere in the circuit and connected to either the primary or secondary side to limit the current. Usually they are connected to the secondary side, on which the voltage is 10,000 or 15,000 volts, depending on the size and characteristics of the lamp to be operated. This arrangement of resistors is suitable for lamp operation, but is expensive and involved.
It has been shown that it is more economical, simple and completely just as effective to attach the required resistor in accordance with the invention in the winding of the transformer itself. One or the other winding is preferably designed as a winding made of resistance wire, for example nichrome, NeuSäber or the like, while the other can be of the usual design. It is clear, however, that both windings can be made from resistance wire.
In the drawing, 1 denotes the primary winding of a transformer Reit Zufüh approximately line 2 and 3, which can be connected to an alternating current connection of the usual type, for example at 110 volts voltage and 60 frequency. A secondary winding 4 with lines 5 and 6 is provided on which the relatively high voltage required for the operation of the vacuum tube lamps is developed. The required resistance is contained in the windings. The winding 1 or the winding 4 can consist partly or entirely of resistance wire, for example nichrome, nickel silver or the like. This can also be the case with both windings. Advantageously, however, the secondary winding is made of resistance wire and the primary winding of wire made of ordinary material.
According to the figure, these windings are mounted on a magnetic core, which is made of lamellas 7 as a closed core. The windings 1 and 4 are mounted on the leg 8 with an insulation 9 which separates the primary and secondary windings from one another.
The primary lines 2 and 3 are connected to a suitable power source 10, and the secondary lines 5 and 16 to the electrodes 11 and 12 of a vacuum tube lamp, for example to the tube 13, which contains, for example, neon at relatively low pressure.
