Process for the production of a cellulose ester varnish which produces moisture-impermeable coatings. In the production of water-repellent cellulose ester coatings on swellable cellulose films, for example viscose films, it has been shown that pure cellulose ester coatings provide crystal-clear water-repellent coatings, but that these coatings are almost as permeable to water vapor as the swellable cellulose base due to their porosity.
The invention is a process for the production of a moisture-impermeable, crystal clear coatings result in the cellulose ester varnish, which is suitable, for example, for covering transparent cellulose films as well as for covering metal, wood, textiles and other documents.
It has now been shown that when waxes and wax-like bodies, such as paraffin, paraffin oil, vaseline, ceresin, Japan wax, carnauba wax, stearic acid, beeswax, wool fat, are mixed with the cellulose ester varnishes in the production of coatings, a formation of Moisture-permeable pores occurring in the coatings of pure cellulose ester lacquers can be largely avoided. The solid waxes and the hydrocarbons, in particular the hydrocarbons with a branched chain structure, give the best results.
These substances to be admixed are dissolved in solvents that can be mixed with the cellulose ester varnish.
It has also been found that a particularly uniform distribution of the solid waxes and wax-like bodies in the cellulose ester lacquer is achieved when semi-solid or liquid wax bodies are mixed in. In this way, the solid waxes or wax-like bodies are kept in solution in a coating film made from the lacquer, so that the film is prevented from becoming cloudy, and at the same time the moisture impermeability of the coating is significantly increased.
According to the method of the invention, therefore, to produce a moisture-impermeable coating resulting in cellulose ester varnish, the method is that solid and non-solid, water-repellent, waxy bodies in solvents which are miscible with the varnish are added to the cellulose ester varnish. The paints obtainable by the process of the invention can be further improved by adding to them one or more natural or synthetic resins in solvents which are miscible with the paint. As a result, a further increase in the number of different molecular and aggregate forms in the paint mixture is achieved and the tightness and freedom from pores of the structure of a train produced with the paint is increased.
The water-repellent effect of coatings from paints produced by the method of the invention can also be increased by the fact that films produced from the paint, which are on a base, after drying, a heating at a softening point of the added waxes above the softening point or wax-like bodies.

Since the waxes or wax-like bodies to be used for the process according to the invention have only limited solubility in the usual solvents for cellulose esters and their solvents are therefore only miscible with the cellulose ester solutions to a limited extent, the amount of waxes is or wax-like body that can be added to the cellulose ester solutions,
limited by the amount of solubility of these additives in the cellulose ester solvents and on the other hand by the degree of compatibility of their solvent with the cellulose ester solutions, that is, by the ratio of the amount of non-cellulose solvent to the amount of cellulose ester.
If nitrocelluloses are used as cellulose esters, it is possible to mix the waxes or wax-like bodies into these lacquers without having to fear flocculation of the cellulose ester if such liquids or liquid mixtures are used as solvents for the waxes or wax-like bodies , which in total or at least in a mixture component has a solvent capacity for the nitrocelluloses.
In this way it is possible to incorporate any practically required amount of waxes or wax-like bodies into the nitrocellulose lacquers, since there are enough liquids suitable for lacquer purposes, which are solvents for the nitrocellulose and the waxes, either by themselves or in combination with other liquids . For example, clear solutions of waxes or waxy bodies are easily achieved in the drying nitrocellulose lacquer film if the waxes or wax-like substances are dissolved in ethyl ether and the nitrocellulose in the absence of alcohol in acetic acid esters.
Softening agents, for example castor oil or tricresyl phosphate, can also be added.

The compatibility of the solution by means of the waxes or wax-like bodies with the cellulose ester solutions, which determines the amount of wax to be added, i.e. the ratio of the amount of non-cellulose solvent to the amount of cellulose ester, is largely determined by the other properties of the cellulose esters, as has also been shown. It is therefore useful to use those cellulose esters for the production of the paints which are particularly compatible with the solvents of the waxes or wax-like grains.
These are nitrocelluloses with an RT content of over 12%. The use of these nitrocelluloses makes it possible to mix any practically required amount of waxes or wax-like bodies into the paint without having to fear flocculation of the nitrocellulose on the one hand or the waxes or wax-like bodies on the other.
