Process for splitting hydrocarbons. It is known that hydrocarbons can be split by thermal decomposition in the presence of catalysts.
However, saturated hydrocarbons that do not boil over 40, in particular ethane, propane, butane and pentane, are very resistant to cracks. If high temperatures are used, the cleavage goes too far, so that the lowest unsaturated hydrocarbons are formed, and at an even higher temperature there is separation of coal.
At a lower temperature, higher unsaturated hydrocarbons are formed, but the course of the reaction is then too slow to give a good yield of the desired products. It has now been discovered that if the conversion of hydrocarbons boiling below 40 <B> '</B> is carried out in the presence of halogens or their compounds, a 2n 0,
<B> 0 </B> ..Our part of the hydrocarbons is converted into higher unsaturated hydrocarbons of lower molecular weight, 2- ZD weight at a lower temperature and without separation of coal.
It must be mentioned here that although iodine is known as a catalyst for the splitting of hydrocarbons with a high boiling point, it was not to be expected that the 'named substance - also had a favorable influence on the conversion of light over 40' boiling, saturated hydrocarbons in unsaturated hydrocarbons of smaller hulolecular weight wf7r,

Halogen compounds of both organic and inorganic nature can be used as halogen compounds, and preferably those which give halogen or halogenated hydrogen at high temperature.
In addition to elemental halogens, hydrogen, sulfur, phosphorus and oxygen compounds thereof can be used as inorganic compounds. The addition of a halogen or a halogen compound can take place in a very simple and known manner, all the more so as a large number of substances are available which are either in solid, liquid or gaseous state or as a dispersion in a suitable medium to the material to be treated to can be set.
In addition, various activators such as copper, iron and / or to promote the reaction. their salts, oxygen, sulfur and the like are added.
<I> Example: </I> A few hundredths of a volume percent iodine are added to propane and the mixture is then heated. At <B> 575 'C </B> the escaping gases contain about <B> 15 </B> 1/2 percent unsaturated compounds, at 600, C about <B> 2.5% </B> and - at <B> 6'50 '</B> C approximately <B> 35.3% </B> unsaturated hydrocarbons.
The iodine used can be easily recovered. Free iodine partially sublimes when the cracked gases cool down. The dissolved part can be extracted with sulfite.
In addition, it is possible to carry out the method described both at atmospheric pressure and at higher or lower pressures.
