Process for the production of wire and alloys of aluminum with components that form niche crystals. It is known that in the production of good electrically conductive wire from alloys of aluminum with mixed crystals forming components, for example with copper or silicon, the wire rod or press wire before drawing from a temperature that is just below the solidus point of Alloy is located, quenching, and after drawing it, allow it to continue at a temperature below 250 0 until the desired conductivity is reached.
However, this treatment is associated with a not inconsiderable reduction in the mechanical properties.
Extensive tests have now shown that such an aluminum alloy wire with excellent conductivity and with an increase in its mechanical properties, in particular elongation, can be produced if the wire rod or press wire is produced in an uninterrupted process without intermediate annealing and without quenching it draws approximately to the final dimension, then only cools off the temperature from a temperature slightly below the solidus point and then starts at a temperature below 2500. The conductivity increases exceptionally well, as does the elongation, while the strength remains about the same or only decreases slightly.
In addition, it is possible to improve these by cold re-drawing hen at ordinary temperature.
An example of an embodiment of the method is given below. An aluminum alloy wire with 40 ° copper and 2% silicon and a diameter of approx. 2.1 mm is drawn to approximately the desired final dimension immediately after its production by rolling or pressing. It is then heated to a temperature slightly below 500 0 and quenched. The material then has a strength of 34 kg per mm3 with a conductivity of 21.30.
It is then tempered at about 220 ° for 15 hours; the conductivity increases to 28.35; the firmness falls a little. It is then drawn cold to a diameter of 1.9 mm. The strength increases to 36 kgm per mm 'with an elongation of over 10%. The conductivity of the final product is 28.
