Metalldampfgleichrichter.
Metal vapor rectifier. In metal vapor rectifiers, such as mercury vapor rectifiers, it has hitherto been customary to mount the condensation space for the evaporating mercury between and above the anodes above the mercury cathode.
This construction was based on the idea that the mercury evaporates primarily in the Käthod'en spot or in its immediate vicinity, and secondly that this steam shoots upwards as a vertical jet to condense there in the condensation room with sufficient cooling .
While the second view is likely to be correct, recent experiments have shown that the mercury in no way evaporates in the cathode spot, but that the entire amount of mercury in the cathode is involved in the evaporation according to its temperature, while evaporation in the cathode spot itself remains questionable .
This new knowledge in the steam generation of a metal steam rectifier now offers the possibility of directing the flow of steam and condensation according to the other conditions for the operation of a rectifier.
It is well known that it is not beneficial for the metal vapor to get near the anodes. In order to avoid this, various means have already been used without, however, achieving the desired purpose sufficiently.
The invention provides new means to achieve this goal by the opening of the arc guide located above the cathode, through which the current flows from the cathode to the anodes, is small in relation to the evaporating surface of the cathode, for the main purpose to condense the amount of metal vapor in the space below the arc guide.
The accompanying drawing shows schematically an embodiment of the subject of the invention. In Fig. 1 is a rectifier vessel with the usual cylindrical shape; it is surrounded by a cooling jacket 2. Water, for example, is used as a coolant. 3 is the cathode. A double-walled screen 4 is used to guide the arc, which comprises all anodes 5 and the anode screens 9 at the top and runs out into a cylindrical tube 6 against the cathode.
For the correct guidance of the steam it is now important that the diameter of the mouth tube 6 is small in relation to the diameter of the mercury cathode, because this is the only way to ensure that the main part of the mercury vapor is deflected sideways into the condensation chamber 7 below the anodes becomes. This is possible precisely because, as mentioned above, the entire amount of mercury in the cathode is involved in the evaporation. Most of the rising mercury vapor will therefore be dissipated laterally, since the opening cross section 6 of the arc guide 4 is relatively small compared to the cross section of the cathode.
In order to make the condensation chamber as effective as possible, it is also important that the bottom of the rectifier vessel is well cooled. A pipe system 8 is installed in the example shown for more intensive cooling. The double walls of the arc guide 4 also serve for better cooling, in that the heat transfer from the hot anodes into the condensation room 7 is impaired. In addition, the condensation space 7 and especially the transition from the cathode space to the condensation space must be designed in such a way that the most favorable suction effect of the condensation space is achieved.
A solitary line of the mercury vapor for condensation below the anodes is already known, but no value has been placed on the formation of the arc guide and in particular on a narrow opening 6 in relation to the cathode surface. But this is essential for the effect of the arrangement.
