Single or multi-anode power converter with gas or vapor discharge path. Converters with a gas or vapor discharge path are generally built in such a way that the cathode is housed in the lower part of the discharge vessel and the anodes are in the upper part of the vessel, which is used as a condensation chamber and is provided with special cooling devices.
In this type of converter with a liquid cathode in operation, the vapor flow generated from the cathode during operation runs parallel to the arc discharge for most of the distance between the cathode and anode. This leads to the anodes being washed around by the steam, which causes relatively high steam pressures in the anode area and is the cause of returns to the anodes.
Bringing conventional protective or arc guiding sleeves around the anode with the opening in such a way that the direct entry of vapor from the cathode into the sleeve and to the anode is prevented, leads to an increase in the arc length and the voltage drop. The same disadvantages are present in known single anode valves in which the cathode and anode lie at the ends of an elongated tube and a heat sink extends in the space between the two.
In order to remedy these deficiencies, attempts have been made to give the steam flow a path that is separate from the arc discharge. Arrangements have been proposed in which it is possible for the vapor rising from the cathode to reach the condensation surfaces without coming into contact with the arc over most of its length.
As a result of the unfavorable arrangement of the electrodes and cooling surfaces, however, there is no complete separation of the steam flow and the arc from .the discharge away, and the arc length and the losses remain relatively large. In the case of current converters with ring cathodes that have become known, these unfavorable conditions have not been taken into account.
The invention now relates to a single or multi-anode converter with gas or vapor discharge path and condensation device for the steam generated during operation, which are arranged to one another in such a way that the steam flow and discharge run through separate paths in the discharge vessel.
To achieve the intended purpose, the cathode is given the shape of a ring according to the invention and the anodes are inserted into the discharge vessel provided with outer jacket cooling so that their projection lies within the circular area delimited by the ring cathode.
In the drawing, Ausführungsbei games of the invention are shown schematically in Fig. 1 and 2 on single-anode converters in a longitudinal section through the vessel; FIG. 3 shows a longitudinal section through a multi-anode converter and FIG. 4 shows a floor plan for this.
In all figures, 1 denotes the current converter vessel made of metal, in the bottom of which the ring cathode 2 is inserted with the aid of the cathode insulation 3a, 3b. The jacket of the vessel 1 is designed to be double-walled for cooling with liquid. The lid 7 of the vessel has no artificial Küh treatment. The anodes 4, 4a, 4b etc. are arranged in the discharge vessel in such a way that their projection lies within the circular area bounded by the cathode. With 5 the anode bushing insulators are designated and 6 are the anode enclosing internals to protect against the impact of mercury silver splashes from the cathode. These internals expediently take the form of blinds arranged like blinds.
The anode 4 of a Einanodenventilskunn, as shown in Fig. 1, can be introduced through the ring cathode from below into the discharge vessel, or according to FIG. 2 through the vessel cover from above. The ring cathode is located between the anode and the cooling device, which results in a sharp separation of the flow direction of the mercury vapor and the discharge arc, starting directly at the cathode surface.
As shown by the arrows drawn in, the mercury vapor flows from the cathode surface directly to the cooled outer surface of the vessel, while the discharge is directed towards the anode located centrally in the ring cathode. is. This arrangement has the advantage that the anode can be brought relatively close to the cathode without the arc waste being greatly increased by protective sleeves. The arc path becomes very short and the voltage drop small. The introduction of the anode from below according to FIG. 1 results in the further advantage that the arc centers itself on the anode.
In the case of large short-circuit or re-ignition currents, the cathode spots will migrate to the front surface of the anode because you want to enlarge the current loop. In order to achieve the same effect with the Anodeneinfüh tion according to Fig. 2, the power supply to the cathode can also be made from above as with the anode who the. Single-anode power converters according to Fig. 1 and \? can have permanently burning excitation or an ignition electrode.
3 and 4 show a multi-node converter with anodes 4a, 4b inserted from below through the ring cathode. Between the circularly grouped anodes are partitions 9 in order to avoid mutual interference between the anodes by the ion currents of the burning anode. In the case of multi-anode power converters, it is easily possible to insert the anodes from above through the cover, as explained for single-anode power converters according to FIG. The effect of this arrangement is the same as described in FIGS. 1 and 2.
The in the illustrated Ausführungsbei play to intercept mercury sprays serving protective fittings 6 can be used as a control grid. However, any number of special control grids 9 can also be provided, which are advantageous between the anode's and built-in protective shields. If necessary, several protective fittings can also be provided, as shown for example in FIG. 3 at 6a and 6b.
In order to prevent the mercury condensate forming on the cover plate 7 from dripping onto the anodes, a collecting plate 8 with a drain device to the cathode can be provided in the upper part of the discharge vessel, as shown in FIGS. A cooling liquid as well as artificially moved air or gas can be used to cool the converter.
The arrangement according to the invention can be used in the same way for converters for high current and for high voltage as well as for pumpless converters and for those which have an inert gas filling for the purpose of easier starting.
