Kontaktgleichrichter.
Contact rectifier. Contact rectifiers are known, the elements of which have a second electrode in addition to an electrode made of a metal (for example aluminum) which, as an effective layer, contains a compound of a metal (for example copper) with an element of the sulfur group. In rectifiers of this type, the valve effect occurs at the point of contact between the metal electrode, referred to below as the counter electrode, and the metal connecting layer of the other electrode.
Such rectifiers are suitable for rectifying alternating currents of low strength, but fail when currents of greater strength are to be rectified. The reason for this phenomenon is probably in the relatively high internal resistance of the effective (;: chicht and the associated low efficiency of the rectification.
The subject matter of the invention is a contact rectifier of the type mentioned at the beginning, which does not have the stated disadvantage and produces a remarkably good rectifying effect. According to the invention, this is achieved in that the electrode containing the metal compound layer is composed of two layers produced from powdered starting material in a joint operation under high pressure, one of which is made of the metal compound mentioned and the other of one Made of metal.
The production of the electrode containing the metal compound gas and its assembly with the counter-electrode to form a rectifier element takes place, for example, in the following way:
In a press equipped for high pressure, which is suitable for the production of hollow cylindrical plates of the body, powdered copper and powdered sulfur copper (Cuprisulfi.d) are stacked in a ratio of 2: 1 and then subjected to a pressure of several thousand kg jcm2.
The electrode formed in this way is then pressed together with a counter-electrode made of aluminum under a relatively low contact pressure, which is substantially below the pressure used to compress the powdered starting materials. Such a rectifier can be loaded with relatively high voltages and correspondingly high currents without it showing the tendency to break down. The current heat occurring during the load is discharged into the environment in a known manner. The stronger the load, the stronger the cooling caused by ventilation, for example, must of course be.
It has been shown that particularly good effects are obtained if it is ensured that the size of the contact area of the effective layer of the electrode with the counter electrode does not exceed a certain amount that must be observed to ensure perfect surface contact .
As extensive tests have shown, this measure is always below 1 '. If one goes beyond this limit, it cannot be avoided that only point contact is found on some of the surfaces of the electrodes that are in contact with one another. However, this not only carries the risk that the rectifier will be overloaded at individual points and break down, but also a considerable deterioration in the efficiency that is possible with good surface contact. But if the contact area of the electrode is kept smaller than 1 cm ', the perfect surface contact required for good effect can be secured.
It is advisable to use completely dry copper sulfide powder to manufacture the electrode described. In order to obtain such, one can proceed as follows: The commercially available copper sulfide powder, for example produced by precipitation from a copper salt solution using hydrogen sulfide, is mixed with a strong addition of sulfur powder and mixed well. The excess sulfur is then sublimed out by heating to about 250 ° C.
