Device to prevent accidental loosening of right- or left-hand threaded assemblies. The object of the present invention is a device for preventing accidental loosening of assembly members such as screws, bolts, nuts, with right-hand or left-hand threads. This device is characterized in that it com takes an elastic split washer presenting a housing intended to receive and elastically clamp a wedging part having such a shape and arranged so that projecting parts of this part can, during the tightening, come into contact, on the one hand, with the member whose loosening is to be avoided and, on the other hand, with a body between which and said member the washer is disposed,
so as to be driven in the direction of the relative displacements of the opposite faces of the above-mentioned organ and body, so that the wedging part tilts in a direction depending on that of the thread, by separating the ends in sight of the washer, in order to obtain that the latter urges the wedging part to straighten up and to get wedged between the body and the assembly member, as soon as the latter loosens, to then oppose any relative angular displacement between them.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the positive device.
Fig. 1 is a front elevation; Fig.2 is a plan; Fig. 3 is a partial section taken along line A-A & FIG. 2; Fig.4 shows the device mounted on a right-hand thread bolt before tightening; Fig.5 is a similar view after tightening; _ Fig. 6. shows the beginning of loosening, and Figs. 7 to 9 are variants.
As is shown in the attached drawing, the device according to the invention is constituted by an iondelle or ring 1, made of elastic material, in which is cut a slot 2 serving as a housing for a wedging member 3.
This wedging or wedging member consists of a bar, made of a material harder than the nut and the part to be tightened, and of suitable section to be kept clamped laterally between the two ends of the split elastic washer, and to protrude outside the bearing faces of said washer by two ridges 3a, 3b which form the opposite longitudinal edges of the bar: and are intended to come into contact with one another, the clamping nut 4 and the other with the component to be clamped 5.
As can be seen in the drawing, the bar rette 3 is held against any outward movement by its fitting in the housing 2 of the washer 1.
The above device is used and functions as follows: With the washer 1.fitted with the, bar 3 being threaded either on a bolt 6 to, not to the right or on a bolt to pitch to the left, the rotation of the l 'nut 4 in the direction of tightening has the effect, when it comes into contact with the edge 3a of the bar, to tilt the latter which is supported by its edge 3b on the part to be screwed 5 and opens the ron delle 1, as shown in fig. 5.
When the nut is fully screwed in, the edges 3a and 3b are flush, as seen in this figure, with the upper and lower faces of the washer.
If, for any reason whatsoever, the nut tends to unscrew and, consequently, to loosen the washer, the latter, due to its elasticity, tends to close and straighten the bar in the direction of the arrow X fig. 6, pressing the edges 3a and 3b strongly against the nut and the part to be screwed 5.
The tendency to unscrew the nut also has the effect of straightening the bar 3 in the same direction as above, but as this bar is made of a harder material than that of the nut and of the part to be tightened, this bar penetrates more or less deeply into these two organs by the edges 3a and 3b and thus opposes the accidental unscrewing of the nut fig. 6.
The complete straightening of the bar 3, and its return to its initial position shown in fig. 4 corresponding to the loosening of the nut, can only be obtained by exerting on the latter and; in the direction of unscrewing, a force sufficient, by means. of a wrench, for example, the edges 3a and 3b penetrating more and more deeply into the nut 4 and into the part; 5.
The movement of the bar continues in the direction of arrow X until the nut, by unscrewing it, having moved far enough away from the washer, releases the bar which is then brought back into the washer. the opposite direction by the elasticity .de the washer which, by closing, finally returns said bar to its initial rest position shown in fig. 4.
The washer can again: be used for retightening a screw from thread to. right-hand or left-hand thread.
The bar shown in fig.l to 6 is, along the median plane BB fig. 1 of the ron delle, of rectangular section, but it is understood that this section could just as well have any shape such, for example, as that shown in FIGS. 7 and 8.
In the embodiments described above, the bar 3 is symmetrical, which makes it possible to use the device directly according to the invention both for nuts which are screwed to the right and for nuts which are screwed on. health on the left.
The same result can be obtained, following the invention, by giving this bar 3, as shown in FIG. 9, an asymmetrical shape allowing, by simple reversal of said bar, to use it also for right-hand threads and for left-hand threads.
The shapes, materials and dimensions of the constituent parts of the device as well as the execution details can be modified.
