Der Reaktionsverlauf entspricht wahrscheinlich folgenden For meln

Process for the preparation of an arylcarboxamide-o-thioglycolic acid. It has been found that the reduction of o-cyanarylsulfochlorides is so. suggests that the sulfochloride group is reduced to the Merkaptangrup.pe, while at the same time the cyano group is converted into the carboxamide group.
The arylcarboxamide-o-mercaptans thus obtained can be converted in a known manner with monochloroacetic acid into arylcarboxamide-o-thioglycolic acids.
The course of the reaction probably corresponds to the following formulas
EMI0001.0016
A key feature of this production is that it is practical throughout the entire reduction process. no nitrogen of the cyano group is split off in the form of ammonia, while otherwise the corresponding carboxylic acids are usually formed.
This result can be achieved by working under the following conditions: The o-Cyanarylsulfoöhloride are dissolved in an inert organic solvent, such as benzene, chlorobenzene. Zinc dust, tin chloride or iron powder can be used as reducing agents with the addition of either strong mineral acids or an organic acid. Strong hydrochloric acid is particularly suitable. Of the organic acids, glacial acetic acid, strong formic acid and the mono- and disulfonic acids obtained from naphthalene sulfonation give particularly favorable results.
Sulphinic acids are presumably formed as intermediate products of the reduction process.

"An elimination of nitrogen from the cy an group in the form of ammonia must be carefully avoided during the entire reduction process.
This is recognized in the following way: From time to time one takes a sample of the; Reaction mass, dilute it with .Wasser, filtered from the -organi- see residue, make the filtrate -alkaline and boil. Such samples should only contain traces of ammonia. After the reduction is finished:
the benzene is distilled off, the residue is diluted with water and filtered off. The mercaptan thus formed probably has the construction of a 1-methyl-2-carboxamide-5-chlorobenzene-3-mercaptan. Without further cleaning - one slurries it with 3Ö0 parts of water,
it dissolves - by - adding - about 40 parts of caustic soda from 33 @ Be and adds 10 parts - monochloroacetic acid. The condensation takes place at normal temperature - and ends in a relatively short time.
In order to separate the free acid, it is acidified, advantageously with the addition of the same volume of saline solution: 1-methyl-2-carboxymia-5-chlorobenzene-3-thioglycolic acid separates out in white crystals. "<I> Example 2:
- </I> Dissolve 25 parts of 1-methyl-2-cyano-5-chlorobenzene = 3-sulfochloride in about 50 parts of benzene and add 25 parts of zinc dust at the usual temperature. - You stir for about two hours at this temperature, - then heat up - and keep it boiling for a few hours.
At about -80, gradually add about 50 parts of glacial acetic acid and keep the temperature at 80 for a while while stirring well. Then.- it is diluted with about 10,000 parts of water, filtered and the residue is repeatedly treated with dilute sodium hydroxide solution.
The combined weakly alkaline - filtrates are treated at ordinary temperature with a solution of 15 parts of monochloroacetic acid in 250 parts of water neutralized with lye. The isolation of the 1-methyl-5-chlorobenzene-2-carboonic acid amide thus formed 3-thioglycolic acid is carried out according to Example 1. It is identical to the product described there.
