Fig. 4 und 5 zeigen eine andere Aus führungsform.
Device for leading catalytic reactions between gases or
Vapors or between gases and vapors.
With many reactions between gases or vapors or between gases and
Practical successes could not be achieved, especially when such reactions were only possible with the help of contact substances. The failure was mostly due to the fact that the three main conditions, namely high efficiency of the catalyst used, high gas velocity and rapid removal of the reaction products from the reaction zone, could not be maintained at the same time or only incompletely.
The present invention relates to a device that enables the simultaneous fulfillment of these conditions.
The device according to the invention is characterized in that it has a rotatable conveyor element (screw, impeller, propeller, fan, etc.), which guides the gases or vapors forward and mixes and which is provided on the surface with catalytic material. If you set this feed organ in rapid rotation, you can
Generate contact areas of such size that can never be achieved with static catalysts. This makes it possible for catalytic processes to react in such large amounts of gas or vapors per unit of time that many of these processes can now be carried out on a large scale with economic benefit, in which this was previously not possible.
But also the profitability of those gas processes that are already using
Success in large-scale operations can be increased significantly when using the new device.
This is particularly the case because the new device not only greatly increases the effective surface area of the catalysts, but also allows the reaction products to be removed from the reaction zone extremely quickly and the reaction gases to be mixed very closely and very easily heated or cooled.
The conveying element is expediently designed in such a way that it can be heated, be it only to initiate the reaction, if it continues to be maintained by its own warmth, be it for the entire duration of the reaction. The electric current is expediently used for heating.
For example, screw blades can be made hollow and then contain means for influencing the temperature (heating or cooling).
Furthermore, with the device according to the invention, the third condition mentioned earlier can also be ideally fulfilled, namely the rapid removal of the reaction products from the reaction zone.
If the implementation during the passage through the device is not completely complete, nothing stands in the way of connecting a number of such devices in series.
With the new device, gas reactions can be carried out both without and with pressure. In the latter case, the contact apparatus must be built into pressure vessels such as autoclaves, pressure pipes, pressure cylinders, etc.
With the device, a large number of oxidation and reduction processes with gases can be carried out with practical success. In the following, for example, embodiments of the device which are suitable for ammonia combustion will be described in more detail with reference to the accompanying drawing.
Fig. 1 is a side and Fig. 2 is an end view of a propeller adapted for electric heating; 3 shows a hollow propeller with internal gas heating in an axial section; Fig. 4 is an end view, Fig. 5 is a side view, in half section, of a paddle wheel which is filled with a catalyst.
There. platinum has proven to be the best catalyst for ammonia combustion. in this case, for example, the blades of the fan itself can be made from platinum, namely from ribbed or corrugated platinum sheet metal or from platinum wire mesh or platinum spirals. In order to bring the catalyst to the reaction temperature, it can be heated with a fan or made into a conductor of an electric current. However, the blades can also be made of an insulating material and the platinum forming the catalyst can be attached to them in wire or mesh form, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
In this case, for example, the wire is attached to the wings in loops a, or surrounds the wings in turns b.
The ends are led to two slip rings c, d which are connected to the power source, for example in series with the electric motor e. 3 shows hollow blades, for example made of iron, which can be heated from the inside with gas. For this purpose, the hollow shaft f is connected to a gas line by a labyrinth seal (not shown), and perforated tubes h 7b inside the blades communicate with the bore of shaft f. Combustion air can be sucked in through openings i, i.
With this construction, the flames burn from the holes in the tubes h, It and the combustion gases are discharged through a labyrinth wire lc and an annular tube I.
Fig. 4 and 5 show another imple mentation. A rotatable disk p carries the blades g, which are closed by a cover r except for the annular opening s. (In FIG. 5, a cover r is shown partially broken off.) In this way channels t are formed through which the centrifugal force drives the gases in the direction of the arrows M. These channels are then filled with porous catalysts which are held in place by wire mesh, perforated metal sheets or the like. The paddles and walls can also be made from the catalyst itself if it is a metal.
While until now only low gas velocities were generally possible in the technical production of steel oxides by the combustion of ammonia, for example 6.6 m3 per minute in each element (see "The nitrogen industry" by Bruno Wäser, p. 487 ), devices according to. of the invention are produced which have pipes with a diameter of 500 mm, through which an ammonia air mixture at a speed of 20 m / sec. (4 m31sec.) Can be enforced and which, for example, have a contact area of 2 times 20 dm2.
So if you have a fan that makes 1200 revolutions per minute, you get a Konta. Area of about 40 X 20 = 800 dm2 = 8 m '/ sec.
When using devices according to the invention, for example, oxygen can also be used instead of air for the oxidation of ammonia. This was not possible in previously known devices because of the associated explosion mefahr. In devices according to the invention, the ammoniacs are oxidized to nitrogen oxides, as experiments have shown, so rapidly that no explosion can occur.
Just like the ammonia oxidation process, a wide variety of such processes between gases and vapors with air, oxygen, ozone, water vapor, etc. can be carried out in the devices. Another example is the production of malaldehyde from methane. The new apparatus has performed very well in this process in particular. Until now, the yield in this process has been due to the tendency of the formaldehyde formed. At the temperatures in question for the individual catalysts, the decomposition into carbon oxide and hydrogen is only very slight. On the other hand, if the temperature was chosen to be lower, most of the methane remained undecomposed.
As a result of the extraordinarily large contact effect, as made possible by the new device, and as a result of the extremely rapid removal of the formaldehyde formed, for example by means of a fan from the reaction zone, the above-mentioned disadvantages can be completely or largely eliminated. In this process, wires or nets or spirals made of copper or nickel can be used as contact substances, whereby, for example, the blades of a rotating wheel can advantageously be made of these metals or also be brought into contact with powdered or lumpy copper and nickel catalysts.
In the same way, formaldehyde can also be produced from acetylene and oxygen or from acetone.
Other catalytic processes that can be carried out with advantage in these devices are the production of acetaldehyde or acetic acid from acetylene and water vapor or with water vapor and oxygen or air, production of hydrogen cyanide from carbon oxide and ammonia in the presence of contact substances, and the production of amines from alcohol and ammonia, from methane from water gas, carbon dioxide or other gases containing carbon dioxide, from cyanides from carbon dioxide, ammonia and hydrogen, the combustion of hydrocarbons with water vapor to carbonic acid and hydrogen, etc.
