Knurling tool. In the knurling tools used up to now, the wheel (s) are mounted either simply on a handle which is pressed on the carriage of the lathe by pushing it against the workpiece, or on two sliders against each other. from each other so that the workpiece is clamped between the two knobs. Very often, the knurling tool has to be fitted on the lathe carriage instead of the chisel, thus losing time for the worker. In addition, it is essential not to press too hard on the piece to be knurled under penalty of distorting it.
The smaller the diameter of the workpiece, the longer the work takes.
The object of the present invention is a knurling tool between the rotary members of which the workpiece is clamped, charac terized in that these rotary members are carried by slides capable of being moved longitudinally and which slide in a slide formed by the body of the tool.
The accompanying drawing represents, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention, FIG. 1 shows it in elevation, while FIG. 2 shows it in section along line II-II of FIG. 1. FIG. 3 is a cross section along the line III-M of FIG. 2. FIG. 4 shows a construction detail.
. Referring to the drawing, 1 is the body of the tool, the following section of which III-III has the shape of a double T and which has a handle 2. In this body can slide two slides 3 and 4 carrying the knurls 5 and which are held in place by counter-plates 6 and 7. These each carry a central rib 9 sliding in a groove of corresponding width inserted in the web of the double T. The thickness of the latter is slightly less than the height of the rib 9 of the counterplates 6 and 7 so that, when tightening the screws 8, the slides cannot be blocked, as c This is the case with knurling tools which do not have this arrangement.
Two of the * wheels 5 are carried by -the slide 3 and are arranged symmetrically on either side of the longitudinal axis of the tool. The third wheel is carried by the slide 4 and its axis is perpendicular to the aforementioned longitudinal axis.
The slide 3 is moved by means of a pin 10 by the lever 11 bearing on the body 1 of the tool. A spring 12 constantly tends to move the lever 11 away from the handle 2. The backplate 6 of the slide 4 carries a notch 13 in the shape of a T in which the head of a screw engages. 14 taken in a boss coming from manufacture with the body of the tool. The backing plate 6, and with it the slide 4, is forced to move longitudinally in the direction of rotation of the screw 14. This arrangement makes it possible to adapt the spacing of the wheels to the diameter of the parts to be knurled.
The tool is used as follows. The workpiece is introduced between the knurling wheels 5 and the handle 2 and the lever 11 are tightened together, which causes the slide 3 to advance with the knobs it carries against the wheel pivoted on slide 4. The workpiece is attacked from three sides simultaneously so that any reaction tending to produce a bending tension is canceled without, however, the useful force for knurling being limited. During all the work, the tool is absolutely independent of the lathe you are working on.
