Process for the preparation of a conversion product of the peri-cyano naphthalene sulfonic acid. It has been found that peri-cyannaphthalenesulfonic acids, that is to say 8-cyanoinaphthalenesulfonic acid and its derivatives and core substitution products, in particular the halogen derivatives and those which also contain further sulfo groups in the core, when treating with alkaline ones Agents, especially those with caustic alkalis, undergo a peculiar transformation at elevated temperature, which probably proceeds in two phases.
Probably in the first phase the nitrile group is saponified to form the carboxamide group, then the peri-permanent sulfo group is split off and the ring closes to form the internal anhydrides of the peri-amidonaphthoic acids, which, depending on the conditions, easily saponify to the peri-amidotiaphthoic acids will.
The probable course of the reaction for the 8-cyannaplitalin-l-sulfosätire itself is shown using the following equation

The 8-cyanaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid and its derivatives and nuclear substitution products can easily be converted into the corresponding diazo compounds and treating the latter with copper cyanur according to Sandmeyer in the usual way from 8-amino naphthalene-1-sulfonic acid, its derivatives and nuclear substitution products to obtain.
Suitable alkaline agents for the present reaction are caustic alkalis in aqueous or alcoholic solution, both at normal pressure and in a closed vessel under increased pressure, as well as alkaline lyes and alkaline earths, for example milk of lime.
When exposed to strong alkalis, depending on the concentration of the alkali, mainly the internal anhydrides (naphtoestyril) of the peri-amidonaphthoic acids or the peri-amidonaphthoic acids resulting from saponification arise.
When exposed to alkaline solutions and alkaline earths, the alkaline and alkaline earth salts of the peri-amidoriaphthoic acids are formed, from which the acids can be liberated by acidification.
The present patent relates to a process for the preparation of 1-amino-4-chloronaphthalene-8-caiconic acid by the action of alkaline agents on 8-cyau-4-chloronaphthalene-1-sulfonic acid at elevated temperature.
The present new and unexpected reaction makes it possible to produce the 1-amino-4-chloro-naphthalene-8-carboxylic acid on an industrial scale in a very pure state with excellent yield.
The i.-Amiuo-4-clilornaphtalin-8-carboxylic acid obtained is a slightly colored powder which is easily soluble in water, it can be diazotized and coupled with diazo compounds. Example: In a melt of 40 parts of caustic potash and 5 parts of water, 10 parts of 8-cyano-4-chloronaphthalene-1-sulfo-acid sodium are introduced at 150 0 C, which from the 8-amino- 4-chloronaphthalene-l-sulfonic acid (see reports from the German chemical society, Volume 55, page 51) is available in the above-mentioned route.
The temperature is now slowly increased to about 200 and the reaction is kept going for some time at this temperature. After cooling, the melt is dissolved in water, acidified, the separated 4-chloronaphtostyril is filtered and washed with water. It crystallizes from alcohol in the form of yellow needles with a melting point of 270 ° and is identical to the chloronaphtostyril obtained by other means from Eckstrand (Journal für Praktisches Chemie [2] Volume 38, page 172). It can neither be diazotized nor coupled with diazo compounds.
It can easily be saponified, for example by boiling with 10% sodium hydroxide solution, to give 1-amino-4-chloronaphthalene-8-carboxylic acid.
