] Process for obtaining a film allowing the projection of colored Wimages, making it possible to avoid parallactic phenomena. The polychrome color (still or animated) shooting processes can be bichromatic, trichromatic, etc., depending on whether they are based on the selection of two, three or more differently colored images.
These images must be taken in such a way that at a given instant, a colored subject is fixed in an identical position on the various selected images.
If we represent a subject by a model (fig. 1) having two articulated arms aO and Ob, each of which can pivot 180 ', we must have for each case, whether the subject is in motion (fig. 3) or not (fig. 2), the three separate, identical trichrome images. Under these conditions, the final colored image projected on the screen will be free of fringes.
In practice, it is difficult to achieve this condition. In the case of trichromatic processes, for example, most of these do not give three selected images identical in time and space and, during the projection of these images, colored fringes occur due to the fact that these images do not overlap exactly.
As an example we can cite the Hérault and Gaumont processes: According to the first, the images are taken successively, in groups of three, the first by means of a red filter, the second by means of a green filter, the first third by means of a blue filter, for example, and so for each group. It is obvious that if the subject is animated (fig. 4, 5, 6), the three selected images E, F, 9, of this subject, taken respectively by means of - blue, green and red filters, being taken at different times, will not be superimposable.
. According to the Gaumont process, which employs three separate lenses for shooting, it is clear that a view being taken at the same time by each of these lenses from a different angle, will give three non-images. exactly stackable. To eliminate these parallactic effects which, as has been said, produce defective images during projection, it suffices, in the case of the three-color process for example, to take simultaneously and by means of the same lens the three views corresponding to the three images. selected; thus, the condition posed above is achieved.
The present invention relates to a process for obtaining a film allowing the projection of colored images, making it possible to avoid parallactic phenomena, characterized in that one proceeds to the shot using a color selector filter and a lenticular element film recording each frame in several frames each corresponding to one of the colors superimposed on the actual color of the image and in that these images are selected and reproduced on a non-lenticular film which will be used for the color projection.
Here is first of all on what principle is based the operation of a film with elements len ticular, of the film Keller-Dorian for example.
10 When a well-corrected objective gives an image of an object, any part of the lenses can be masked without the part left uncovered ceasing to give a complete image of the object in question. We can therefore mask the different zones of a to lens using color-selection filters without each zone ceasing to give a complete image of the subject as seen through the filter. of said area.
In the case of a photographic lens provided with a color selector system arranged in the plane of the diaphragm, the selector system can be - constituted for example by three monochrome filters red, green and blue. posed, for example, in three juxta posed parts, for example as indicated in FIGS. 8 and 9. As mentioned above, each zone of a lens gives a complete picture of the subject.
The result is that the lens fitted with its trichromatic filters will give on the ground glass an image that does not differ in any way in color from that which the same lens would give without filtering? colored, since the colors selected by these filters constitute in the plane of the image three complete monochrome images which are superimposed.
20 When a lenticular cell of negligible focal length is placed in a camera and very close to the ground glass in relation to the focal length of the main lens, this tiny lens projects at both on the frosted glass, the portion of the main image coming from the objective inscribed in the perimeter of the lens and the image of the ocular disc (diaphragm) of the objective.
From what precedes it follows that, when one places in a photographic objective a red, green, blue trichrome selector filter and that one has at the focal point of the objective a very small semi-croscopic to lens distance in front of the frosted glass, we see that the trichromatic selector disc with its three parts is projected onto this frosted glass by the small lenticular cell at the same time as the portion of the main image corresponding to to the surface thereof.
In the case of the reproduction of a red point for example, the radiations emitted by this point will pass only through the red part of the selector filter, the small lenticular cell will project on the ground glass a red luminous zone similar geometrically to the red part of the selector filter, while in the green and blue parts of the selector filter do not. will match only dark areas.
If the frosted glass is replaced by a panchromatic photographic emulsion and this one is impressed, only the part corresponding to the red zone will blacken in the developer.
If the revealed image is reversed, the impressed part will become transparent, while the parts that correspond to the green and blue areas will translate into black.
For projection, if we admit that we replace the image of the aforementioned red point at the focal point of the lens and that we illuminate by a beam of white light, the white rays will obviously only cross the transparent area of the lens. test. The cell acting according to the law of reversibility of the course of the light rays will direct the white rays of the beam exclusively in the red part of the lens selector filter, and we will have on the projection screen the image in red, of the point red photographed.
The theory of reproducing complex hued objects is not more complicated. If we take a yellow object for example, whose radiations are composed of red and green, it will suffice to extend the above demonstration and to admit that two of the zones of the elementary images, the red zone and the green zone, will simultaneously be interested in the action of light. In the same way for the purple radiations, it would be the red and blue-violet zones which would intervene.
Finally, , for whites and neutral grays, these would be the three areas that would be affected. This being said, we will represent the constitution of the film Keller-Dorian as follows -. a photographic emulsion the support of which is formed by the juxtaposition of an infinity of microscopic lenticular cells identical to each other and each acting as the single cell studied above.
The shape of these cells can be different from one film to another, for example spherical (picot) or cylindrical (groove).
In short, the Keller-Dorian thread is, for each colored image, the representation by as many selected images as the process comprises of constituent colors (' for example three in the case of the sorting chrome process). Each of these images, not colored by itself, coming from a selector filter of a different color, these images being taken simultaneously by the same objective, that is to say at the same angle, the parallax is impossible.
If, now, we reproduce the images of this Keller-Dorian film on a film of known type, non-lenticular, this film will be free from parallactic effects and can for example be projected by means of a device of the Hérault genre, without give rise to the specific effects to this process mentioned at the beginning of the introduction.
The appended drawing relates, to by way of examples, to various embodiments of the method.
Fig. 7 is a block diagram; Figs. 8 and 9 are detail views showing two types of three-color selector filters; Figs. 10 and 11 relate to two variants of the reproduction process on panchromatic film.
Here is how we can cover the method according to the invention : Let (fig. 7) be a symmetrical optical system R < / I> at one of the foci of which the film to reproduce A, is located, consisting of a Keller-Dorian embossed film at < / B> lenticular elements. The unembossed blank film B is placed symmetrically to A with respect to the optical center of B. A white light source 8 is placed on the main axis and illuminates A.
For reproduction, two cases can be considered: 111B is a -panchromatic film, 20B is an ordinary film.
In the first case (reproduction on panchromatic film), we will proceed for example as follows: We place at the optical center of the optical system a colored selector filter identical (as shape and as colors) to that which was used when shooting on the film. A. In the case of the sort chrome process for example, the selector filter may appear for example (fig. 8) in the form of three sectors b, v, r, respectively blue, green and red if the film A is a at pi cots movie; or three juxtaposed bands b, v, r (fig. 9) if -4 is with grooves.
Let therefore be a three-color selector filter x (fig. 10) placed at the optical center of the optical system. For reproduction, we will simultaneously mask two parts of the filter v and r for example, then two others., B and r for example, etc., so to project on B light beams coming successively from each of the parts of the filter b, - v, r, so to < / B> get on panchromatic film B, which will advance from one frame to each time, blue projections, then green, then red, again blue, and so on.
The film thus reproduced can then be used, for example, for color projection by means of a device of the Hérault type, and will not have a parallactic effect.
According to fig. 11, which also represents the reproduction, given to by way of example, of the film embossed with lenticular elements A on an embossed black panchromatic wire B, an X screen or selector filter is placed at the optical center of the optical system B.
The selection of the three images, blue, green, red, being made by the selector filter X, we interpose a mobile colored selector screen Y comprising the same colors as X on the path of the three beams coming from X, the screen Y being placed in such a way that its colors blue, green, then red successively intercept all the rays coming from X rie letting pass that a beam of rays coming from X, the one which has the same color as its part intercept rays at this instant. Thus, panchromatic film B first receives only a blue frame, then a green, then a red and again a blue, etc., the panchromatic thread advancing one frame each time.
We have thus selected the three series of monochromatic images of the embossed film. These reproduced images are perfectly visible because they are the reproduction of those of a Keller-Dorian film devoid of parallactic effect.
We can also reproduce on an ordinary film, not panchromatic. We will then proceed, for example, as follows: The images of the Keller-Dorian film are selected one to one by means of a non-colored selector device or selector screen.
The selector screen consists of a solid plate title provided with orifices corresponding to the colored parts of a colored selector filter used when taking pictures, of which two of the orifices of the screen are simultaneously closed, so to project onto the virgin film light beams coming successively from each of the orifices of this screen, that is to say a beam of rays corresponding alternately to a monochromatic image blue, then green, then red, blue again, etc.
Because, as was said above, the images of the Keller-Dorian film are not colored, and for the Cree color projection it is necessary, with this film, to use a colored selector screen, which selects the images. corresponding to each constitutive color and gives them this color, these three images, once colored, are superimposed on a projection screen where the final image appears in actual colors.
The film obtained by reproduction only indicates, like the images forming the Keller-Dorian film, the light intensities of each monochromatic image, in black.
To have a color projection, this film will then be either tinted or projected through through colored screens.
If the selected images are reproduced with great precision, the image separation leagues from each lenticular element (which are the reproduction of the lenticular element separation lines on the embossed film) will be visible on the unembossed film and will form on this film, taken together, a very fine network of lines (which we call the frame) surrounding a very large number of small surfaces which are each an image coming from a distinct lenticular element.
So that this frame does not appear on the unembossed film, it suffices to operate the reproduction with an optical system, collimated for example, giving such precision to the image reproduced as it is. is sufficient so that the image itself is good (that is to say sufficiently sharp), but insufficient so that the frame, which is much thinner, does not appear on this film.
The films could not be trichromatic films, but for example films according to the two-color process, or else with more than three colors. The selector filters could be di aimed other than as in fig. 8 and 9 Findiquer.
The lenticular element film used for the shooting could be of a different type from the Keller-Dorian film.
