Elektrode.
Electrode. The present invention relates to the so-called Söderberg electrodes, that is to say electrodes which are baked during their use in the electric oven.
The electrode according to the invention has a protective jacket attached outside the jacket resting on the electrode carbon without a fixed connection to it, which is arranged such that the two jackets can be pushed relative to one another. It can often be pre-; It may be advantageous to make the protective jacket double-walled in order to be able to cool it artificially, for example by means of a liquid or with cold air.
An embodiment of the subject invention is shown in the drawing, namely the same shows a vertical section through a furnace.
1 is an electric furnace; 2 is a self-burning electrode; 3 is a ring with arrangements for clamping each individual electrode clamp 4. These are suspended in the lower end of the protective casing 5, which is attached outside of the casing 6 adjacent to the carbon electrode, guided up through the floor 7 of the tamping house and on top of the suspension arrangement 8 is attached, which can be raised and lowered in a known manner.
11 is a stuffing box at the top of the shell 5; 12 is a stopper ring which is attached to the electrode and which accompanies the electrode as it slides through the socket, thereby preventing the electrode from slipping too far and short-circuiting the furnace by striking the stuffing box of the suspension jacket and thus the Inhibits movement of the electrode. After the electrode is clamped again in the socket, the stopper ring is loosened again and attached at a distance above the uppermost gante of the suspension shell that corresponds to the maximum amount of electrode slippage that is to be allowed.
13 is a sliding support frame that can be moved in the transverse and longitudinal directions of the furnace. A support device 9 is attached to the protective jacket 5 for the electrical lines that supply current to the electrode. 10 is the inlet of the air or another gas that serves to cool the protective jacket. When the air is blown in "it penetrates downward between the jacket 6 and the protective jacket 5, and goes out at the lower end of the latter jacket.
If it is desired to carry out the cooling by means of a liquid, the protective jacket 5 must of course have a double-walled design with a special inlet and outlet for the cooling liquid. This is not shown in the drawing.
The arrangement of such a protective jacket surrounding the electrode has many significant advantages. The electrode is protected against dust and the contact surfaces for the power supply are always kept clean. Because of the cooling effect of the protective jacket, the electrode mass in the uppermost part of the electrode will remain raw, so that a homogeneous connection is achieved when new containers are tamped on. This is extremely important because it is impossible to get a good connection when stamping raw material on partially fired material.
By placing the electrode mass over the holder by means of such a holder. Can keep the protective jacket quite raw, it becomes possible to use the continuous electrode in open ovens "without building a stamped house around the upper end of the electrode. The renewal of the electrode must then take place by extending it outside the oven by replacing the electrodes, As is customary for finished electrodes If desired, the protective cover can also be designed in the form of two or more telescopic tubes, so that the length of the protective cover can be changed as required.
As can be seen from the drawing, the protective sheath can be used to hang the electrode. Such an arrangement completely avoids suspension rollers, bearings and ropes in the furnace chamber. The sliding support frame makes it possible to change the position of the electrode in the furnace in an extremely simple manner; Being able to do the latter as quickly and easily as possible is of great value if the electrical conditions of the furnace or the composition of the load make such a change necessary. Such displacements of the electrode require that the floor of the tamped house is provided with a hole of sufficient size.
Usually it will be advantageous to make the protective jacket from iron plates. The electrode holder can be designed in a known manner and any desired electrode holder can be used. However, it is usually preferred to use a holder of known construction which is designed so that the electrode can be lowered during full operation without interrupting the current.
