Process for the preparation of the disodium salt of the disulfuric acid ester of dihydro-thioindigo. Derivatives of dyes which can be used for direct dyeing without the use of vats can be prepared by two different types of processes, namely a) by processes in which the starting product is a leuco compound; b) by those in which the dye itself is used as the starting material.
Those processes which use a leuco compound as a starting material are difficult to carry out in practice. Firstly, it is not easy and in some cases impractical to obtain the leuco compounds, especially in the case of the more important series of dyes, and secondly, once they have been obtained, because of their easy oxidizability, it is necessary to carry out further process steps in one inert atmosphere.
Even if all the requirements for the use of leuco compounds are taken into account, there is still the difficulty that leuco compounds of dyes are seldom or only with difficulty obtained pure, from which it follows that the method must necessarily be unsuitable because only part of the leuco dye used, which can be subjected to treatment in the known processes.
The purpose of the present invention is to create an improved method by which, with a leuco body as the starting material, the lack of yield, which is caused by the presence of the original dye or of regressed leuco body in the material, is avoided or reduced.
The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of the disodium salt of the disulfuric acid ester of dihydro-thioindigo, and is characterized in that leukothioindigo is thrown under the action of a sulfur trioxide derivative of a tertiary base in the presence of a metal,
the tertiary base is removed by steam distillation after the addition of alkali and the reaction product is precipitated from the filtered aqueous solution by crystallization.
The product obtained in this way is freshly made, a colorless crystalline body which slowly takes on a pale red shade under the influence of light. The product is easily soluble in hot water and, when the hot, saturated solution cools, separates out in shiny flakes. When treated with mild, acidic oxidizing agents, such as saline acid, iron chloride or bichromate in acidic solution, it is quantitatively decomposed into thioindigo and sulfuric acid. Its solution can be used for dyeing textile fibers.
It has a certain affinity for animal fibers in the warmth or in the presence of small amounts of acid, but practically none for vegetable fibers. The textile fibers can, however, be impregnated with a strong solution of the product and the thioindigo deposited in the fibers by treatment with a suitable acidic oxidizing agent. The following example shows how the process can be carried out with all parts given as parts by weight.
Example: 10 parts of thioindigo are made up with 15 parts of sodium hydroxide and 15 parts of sodium hydrosulfite dissolved in 1000 parts of water in a vat. The solution is filtered and the leuco compound is precipitated from the filtrate by adding dilute sulfuric acid.
The free leuco compound is filtered off, washed and then placed as quickly as possible in a vacuum desiceator which contains sulfuric acid and is kept at a temperature of approximately 40 °.
3 parts by weight of the dry leuco-thioindigo produced in this way are mixed with 2 parts of zinc dust and added to a cooled mixture of 18 parts of pyridine and 7.5 parts of sulfuric acid chloride, which can be contained in an open kettle.
The temperature of the mixture is increased to 60 and held there for approximately 30 minutes. The gray mixture is then distilled with 200 parts of a 5% sodium carbonate solution with steam until all the pyridine has been removed. The filtrate contains the desired sulfuric acid derivative of thioindigo in an almost theoretical yield. It can be obtained as an almost pure white, crystalline powder by cooling the filtrate.
Other metals can be used in place of zinc, for example tin, magnesium, and copper bronze, or copper bronze mixed with about 75 g of zinc. The metal does not enter the end product of the process.
Instead of chlorosulfonic acid, other substances which finely form the sulfur trioxide derivative of the tertiary base with the tertiary base can be used, for example sulfur trioxide or oxychloride and its salts, or salts of chlorosulfonic acid, including alkylchlorosulfonates, in which case haloalkyls are also formed .
Other tertiary bases can be used in place of pyridine; the tertiary base does not enter the end product of the process.
The stable, water-soluble products in solid form can be used for dyeing or printing textile fibers without using vats.
