Process for the preparation of 1 # 4 # b # 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid. The 1 # 4 # 5 # 8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid was presented for the first time by Bamberg and Philip (Liebigs Annalen, vol. 240, p. 182), from pyrenic acid by oxidation, a method of presentation which, because of the inaccessible pyrenic acid, has no technical information has interest.
Furthermore, the acid was obtained in a very laborious manner by Freund and Fleischer (Liebigs Annalen, Vol. 373, B. 332/24 and Vol. 402, P. 70/24), by condensation of acenaphthene with diethylmalonyl chloride; Ether out, separation of the ismores formed during this condensation, splitting of the acenaphthene-peri-indandione by cooking with 50% potassium hydroxide solution, conversion of the potassium salt of 4-diethyl-acetyl-1,8-acenaphthen-5-carboxylic acid into the free acid and subsequent oxidation.
It has now been found that when using 11lalonyl chloride, only the peri-acenaphtenindanedione is evidently formed

and that this can be oxidized directly with oxidizing agents to form 1.4.5.8-naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid.
The process means a considerable simplification, in particular because, surprisingly, no splitting of the indandione ring is necessary to enable the oxidation.
The acid is said to be used as a starting material for dyes.
In an analogous manner, the decvates of acenaphthene with a free peri-position can be converted into corresponding derivatives of naphthalene tetracarboxylic acid. Example: 20 parts by weight of acenaphthene are dissolved in 200 parts by weight of carbon disulfide and, after 30 parts of malonyl chloride have been added, 35 parts by weight of aluminum chloride are gradually added.
The reaction that occurs is expediently somewhat alleviated by cooling. When the evolution of hydrogen chloride has ceased, the steam bath is used for a short period of time to stop the reaction. After decomposition with ice and subsequent steam distillation, the reaction product is immediately dissolved in dilute soda solution or sodium hydroxide solution.
A solution of 50 parts by weight of potassium permanganate in 1000 parts by weight of water is added to this alkaline solution and heated on the steam bath until discoloration has occurred. The precipitated manganese dioxide is then filtered off with suction and the 1 # 4 # 5 # 8-naphthalene tefracarboxylic acid is precipitated from the filtrate with hydrochloric acid.
Instead of carbon disulfide, other inert solvents can be used, and instead of potassium permanganate, other oxidizing agents can also be used.
